With climbing gas prices and costly airfare, summer travel isn't as affordable as it used to be. But there are still some bargain destinations in the country that you can enjoy for free. Tell us about your favorite no-fee spots!

the beach
the park
the mall (free if you don't buy anything - and it has a/c)

I like to visit historic sites. So if I hear of them, I try to go.

the beach
Not in Joisey in the summer it ain't. A season's pass here can cost more than $75. That gets you on the beach, period. Anything extra you want, you have to bring it. From Labor Day to Memorial Day it's free. For June, July, and August it's "pay up, baby!"

Jersey's state parks are all free admission, and have some really nice lakes, trails, and attractions.

The various Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, and the many memorials in DC are all free admission. You can spend days in DC and not pay an admission fee.

I'd LOVE to go to DC. It's on my list. An East coast trip. See my sis in NY and my future SIL in CT (she used to be in Boston ... a little bummed that she's not anymore).

We have TONS of beaches here that are always free. But not our museums or state parks. Heck, we can barely drive down teh street for free.

Most of the Smithsonian buildings downtown DC are free. Quick ride in on the Metro subway.

I like the library...can browse the magazines and check out videos. There is a Western museum nearby.

I like going to the Art Museum in Phildelphia. It's free on Sundays. Not a whole lot that's free anymore. I love going down and walking on the boardwalk.
