Was it the singing Cooks or the Coffee family. Im not big on Southern Gospel but the woman that sang that song when I heard it as a teen just gave me goose bumps. Her passion was just beautiful. Are they still around does she still sing I just cant remember the group tho its been so long. I wonder if there music can still be bought. take care Casper

I remember the Nelons did "Ain't no Grave" years ago. That's the best version I have heard.

The song was written by Claude Ely. It has been recorded by countless hundreds over the years. As far as Southern Gospel Music is concerned, most people remember either The Singing Cookes uptempo live version that was recorded in Kingsport, TN in the late 70s. Still today, this group usually ends their programs with "Ain't No Grave". Jeanette Cooke (better known as "Mama Cooke") sang the lead. She 'preaches' a little on the live cut.

Then, as frog43 mentioned, The Nelons recorded a version of the song that started VERY slow, and then pepped up a little, but even at that, was no where near as 'get-on-your-horse-and-ride-fast' as The Cookes version. Janet Paschal also recorded a similiar version during her days with The Jimmy Swaggart Crusade. In the mid 80s, The Nelons usually started the song with a comedy routine featuring Jeff Stice, and the other guys in the band. During the line "coming after me" the harmony parts repeated the words.... and the band would jump up and gather around a mic and (in a very out of tune way) add an echo of "coming after me...." It was kinda hokey, but hey, it worked for them...

I'm sure that others could tell you about more groups that have recorded it, but I'm guessing you remember Mama Cooke's version.

The Voices Triumphant recorded it on the Happy Goodman Family Hour album from 1974. The Coffee Family as mentioned in the OP recorded it sometime in the mid to late '70s. The Cookes version is probably the most remembered.

I have never heard the Singing Cookes version of that song. I always think of the Nelons when someone mentions that song.

Wendy Bagwell & the Sunliters had on their record, By Your Request...or so I think.. When I hear Ain't No Grave mentioned, I always think of the version Jason Crabb and Adam Crabb did with the Inspirational group, Selah on the duets cd. That was a little different...I must admit. I heard the Singing Cookes sing that song in concert a few years back...it sorta got old after awhile...they had 2 or 3 encores. IMO-that song is everyone tries to sing differently because there are very few ways to sing it....

I think the live one of Crabb Family off Alive And Kicking is one of the most powerful live songs I have ever heard

It is from the Nelons album "In One Accord". That is when the Nelons went from being country to more of a progressive sound. Their version is the best I have heard of the song. Kelly & Karen at their best.

It is the singing Cookes version because I remember her getting excited and testifying toward the end. Is she still alive? I remember the outreach singers as well that kinda reminded me of the singing Cookes. I miss those days sometimes so many good memories. take care
