Have any of you ever used "Writing Strands"? My older son is behind in writing and I was wondering if this was good and would help.

How old is your son?

We found Writing Strands somewhat confining. My daughter found it boring.

I have found it nice to use because I don't have to do anything but check their work. My DD is working in the level 3 book and she is in 7th gr. I will have both my sons working in it once they finish their "Just Write" book. (this is behind their grade level but I needed to start somewhere with them).

I like it because it is written to them, as if someone is talking to them. I can't tell you how well it works since she has just started about 3 weeks ago. I have had the book sitting on my shelf for a couple of years!

Writing Strands is good for those who need things simple. The pages are black and white. There are blanks to fill in or you can write on a separate paper. They move slowly and only spend a few minutes per day in the early books.

We have used book 2 and book 3 with then 3rd and 4th grade.

My son is in 8th grade, but like I said, he is behind in writing so we do need to keep things simple!! As soon as he hears a writing assignment I can see him thinking of ways to get out of it or make it as short as possible.

He needs a lot of help in organizing his thoughts. I am hoping that since it does move slowly he won't be overwhelmed. I was planning on starting him on the 8th grade book next year (or a little this summer). I don't want it to be too easy, but I don't want it overwhelming either. We use ABeka and their reports and writing assignments (some of them anyway) are beyond him. I think they are beyond him mostly because he just does NOT want to do it...

Your son might enjoy a combination of Wordsmith Apprentice and Wordsmith. They are definitely a different frame of mind and my dd enjoyed their offbeat sense of humor. You will need to get grammar from somewhere else such as Easy Grammar Plus.

Thank you. This actually looks like something he would enjoy more than the other. (As much as he will "enjoy" any writing assignment!)
