Go down the page, and watch the vido excerpt called "Viral_Moments (Easter Weekend)" You won't have to watch long, it's just after the openning dice tricks and in the first song.
I guess that, to add a bit of something different to the overhead lyrics, someone had the idea of putting the words, or at least some of them, on someone's hand and having that person manipulate their hands to show the words at the right times.
Not a bad idea in itself, I think, but in order to do it, in a few places they had to stick a solo middle finger up to show a word.
My question is, was this an obscene gesture? Or if not, was it close enough to one that it maybe should have been re-thought?
For my part, I really have to ask "Who thought doing that was a good idea?" I know some say it wasn't obscene because of the palm was facing the camera instead of the back of the hand, but even knowing that, it was still rather shocking to see it the first time I did, and I wonder how many people would know the difference.
I'm fine with the hand idea (maybe they should lose the robot guys though), but it needs better execution if it's tried again.

I do not get how it is supposed to mean something to me as a Christian (or the dice tricks, either) but I did not see the gesture as being offensive in the context it was in.

I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculousness of this.
Pure entertainment factor.
Yes, I can see how the middle finger is questionable.

Offensive? Not even in the least. It would be silly to be offended by something like that.
There are actually some different versions of sign language. One of them involves using just one hand, and extending different fingers that represent different sounds. In that, the middle finger is sometimes extended on its own too.
Would you be offended then? Of course not. It's a different means of communication that involved a gesture not found offensive to them.
It's basically the same. There was no mal-intent. Regardless of how ridiculous it may be. . . the raising of the middle finger was used in a completely different form of communication than the offensive type you are thinking of.

That would be fine, if we were dealing with a sign language.

But is it? If we are dealing with a sign langauge, I assume we are dealing with a system of gesture that has meaning in the circle of those who know it.
I'm not saying the people who thought up the hand gestures for the lyrics were trying to do something offensive, I'm wondering if was wise to do such a gesture. It's one of those things that simply could have been too easily misinterpreted, assuming it wasn't meant to be "edgy" or "offensive". It simply may have been one of those times when "keep away from an appearance of evil" may have been the best way to go. I'm pretty sure they could have come up with a different gesture.
I'm saying no more then that, that is may have been a bit of bad decision making. Mistakes happen, and I'm not getting on their cases anymore then that.

I needed the fingers for the wording, cuz I sure couldn't understand what they were singing! But, then again, I couldn't see the actual words on the fingers! Just not my cup of tea.
