Hi Nicole.

Just saw your post regarding Foundation Day.

Foundation Day is celebrated on June 1 in Western Australia. That was the day in 1892 when the first European settlers arrived from Britain to start the Swan River Colony.

It is a public holiday in WA.

Hi all...it has been a while since I have been in here. Good to see some more faces and good to know more Aussies and Kiwis are finding their way to CW

Winter hit here with a bang a few weeks ago. We spent the June long weekend coping with major storms, flooding, road closures and blackouts lasting for many days in some cases. We were blacked out for 2 days, but some homes were out for nearly a week. Many homes were flooded and about 9 people lost their lives. And a huge tanker has been washed up on the beach at Newcastle, about an hour north of here. Has been quite extraordinary. But as our pastor told us in church last week, there are some people in the world where this sort of disruption is the nomal way of life for them. Helps to put it in perspective a bit I think.

The good news though is that our water storage levels are rising dramatically. We have gone from 10.5% capacity in our biggest dam to 16.7%, with our total storge over the three dams in our system rising to 21%. And that figure is expected to rise. Praise God!!

I know some of you were praying for our area when I mentioned the drought conditions last year, so I just want to thank you now. I guess my prayer now would be that people understand that God really is in control and that they begin to seek Him out. I think all too often the general population is happy to see our weather as part of some 'cycle' or 'natural occurance', rather than something that God has complete control of.

Have a good day everyone. I am off to catch up on some more threads. There are 100's since my last visit .

Hey everybody. I didn't realise how long it's been since I've been in here. Good to see some movement in the thread.

Julie! Long time no see. You too, Buddy.

Welcome 2bereal. Nice to have you join us. What are you studying?

Got some answers as to what's going on with me. Thankfully nothing serious like cancer or anything. It seems my diabetes is to blame, so I'm going to have to work on losing weight and better controlling the blood sugars.

Hi Trish,
we're all here. I just got back from Maryborough with my first pair of surgical boots in 35? years or so. They are rather chunky but hey they correct a 5cm difference and work great. And all thanks be to God thru our Lord Jesus Christ.
You see, this road was reopened for me through a slight back pain last Chrismas and a diligent physiotherapist.

Having a lovely birthday at home. We skipped church this morning. We'd planned to be out of town, but as we bought my new car this week finances wouldn't allow a trip as well, so we decided to stay home.

We didn't go to church as both dh and I are usually really involved in set-up and clean-up and pretty much all the music stuff between and we really just wanted a break, and we knew that if we went to church there would be expectations even if we said we were having the week off.

And so now we're about to get started on making a couple of things - yesh, extra birthday presents!

Greetings all from a happy canadian day back here at home:) (Home is Canada right now )

Well kind of dropped off for a bit there. I have been spending way too much on the forums and didnt realize till 2 hours later what i have been doing. SO I cut back, deleted this in favourites and in this way i am also preparing for dial up:( Pretty sad eh, but at least i can start working in my garden. I am almost moved to my new place with the inside being chaos but the gardens looking lovely - well almost.
But I jsut wanted to check in and say hi - hope you are starting to feel better Trish; Im also glad to hear that the water is coming to some of you in Australia and happy Canada Day to the rest of you all

Love joyce

Thanks Trish.

I had a really nice day and dh and I managed to complete, but not yet install, two shelves and a wooden panel (all painted a rich chocolate brown) to go in the kitchen. The panel will be used to attach spice rack and some utensil hooks. Sometimes you have to get inventive when you rent. The panel will be covering an unnecessary door in the kitchen which leads to the loungeroom (the very small loungeroom in this house has six doors into it and the equally tiny kitchen has two doors) and we're installing shelves in the doorway on the other side of it to store DVDs and CDs. Dh is just going to screw the shelf unit in the loungeroom straight into the panel in the kitchen and they will stabilise each other without having to get any permission because we're not actually touching the house with any screws or anything.

Joyce, how is the fostering/adoption process going?

Has anyone started seeing different birds in the past few weeks? I know Winter is really here because we had kookaburras on the back fence the other day.

HI KYlie
You make me homesick talking about kookaburras:) I really miss the wildlife of Australia - the pink and grey galahs, cookatoos, even the nasty magpies that attack children on the way to school. Mind you I didnt realize that the birds are more prevalent in winter.

As for the adoption process - I start the adoption course in september and it runs for 10 weeks or rather 10 sessions (so if we add a session on another day it cuts off a week). The new house is also in preparation in gettting him more permanently. Currently I foster him on a relief basis and even though I find the whole process long, I am also glad for this time of preparation. I find I have learnt so much already since i made the decision and continue to learn more when i get him for a week and half in mid July. This will be the first time on the farm so we will see how that goes.

As for your renovating ideas - isnt it fun to figure out stuff like this and mess with tools and such? I totally love it.

Ta da
Joyce

I've just noticed the kookaburras are here more during Winter/Spring. It makes me wonder if they travel north to get away from the cold.

I miss the galahs too. They were prolific where I grew up, but I have only seen them rarely since living in Sydney and now here in Brisbane (that's about twelve years now). I miss the sulphur-crested cockatoos now that we're in Brisbane. In Sydney they were everywhere. Here we see more rainbow lorikeets.

We have to get inventive with any changes we make here because we're renting. We can't attach anything to the walls without permissing and I hate having to ask someone else's permission to do things in my home (sincerely, at 30+yo you'd think I could be trusted not to wreck the place ).

It must be frustrating having to wait for something you want so much, but it is good that it's giving you extra time to get to know each other. Sometimes I think that adopting would be a bigger commitment than marriage.

Hi guys.

Bailey's really interested in bird life. Always has been. He's been having birds teasing him and swooping him, which is really getting on his last nerve. He really shocked me the other day. I came out to give him breakfast and found feathers absolutely everywhere on our back lawn. I've had to pull him off a bird before, a few years ago. This time the bird wasn't so lucky. He'd plucked and killed the magpie and just left it there. They particularly tease and swoop him. I can see why he does it, but it doesn't mean that I approve of it.

When we still had China, our german shepherd x staffy, the cockatoos used to give her a hard time until one day she plucked one of them out of mid-air. I saved the bird - I'm sure our neighbours thought it was hysterically funny with the dog barking and growling, the cockatoo squawking and me yelling at the dog to let it go.

The cockatoos left her alone after that. Hopefully the magpies will leave Bailey alone now and you don't have to deal with it again.

You got me there, Buddy. I don't know if it's just the early hours of the morning, the bad week I've had or what it is, but I have no idea of what ticket lists are.

Does anybody else know?

Eat? I think most young ones have a healthy appetite. The ones I know certainly do.

Wow, I didn't even know that Northland had such bad weather. I'm glad nobody was hurt. No pun intended, but it would have put a real dampener on the kids during their school holidays.
