Okay girls! Here is my plan: I have been temping this month (started with my period) and since that might be a bit sketchy with a cold and traveling back-and-forth from doing holidays with both families (more of a stress than I originally realized!), I'll just do that this month and then get the hang of ... fluids... and....mucosas.... next month. We'll have just under 7 cycles to chart it all. He is so awesome... he is a Biology major and he is thrilled to go through TCOYF. He says he doesn't want it to be just me taking charge of my fertility, that he wants to help me make my charts and stay on top of stuff. Maybe he is secretly afraid that I would "forget" and get too caught up in the moment or something... ha. Who knows. I'm just amazed at how sweet and interested he is in the whole thing! His whole family is hardcore take-your-bc-pills-and-don't-ask-questions, and he'd never HEARD of not taking birth control pills before I mentioned FAM earlier in our relationship. He's really wonderful :) And my temperatures all seem to be in a small range even though I've been sleeping and waking at really funny times... I think that is good... We'll find out. I'm at CD 9 and I'm pretty regular so I'll probably ovulate soon. This is so exciting!

Lol, Abby. My DH is good at NFP/FAM but he won't ever admit that he knows how to accurately read and interpret a chart. He also knows TONS and TONS about infertility issues, lol.

Abby - your DH sounds so sweet! I asked mine to read some relevant chapters and he did so willingly, but I don't think he was *that* interested!! LOL

The first time I ovulated and saw it on a chart I was amazed!

Cool, Abby!

Just remember to take your temp at the same time each morning, even with your strange waking up patterns. Just because you wake up at different times doesn't mean that's when you take your temp. If you have to, set an alarm and take your temp, then go back to sleep.

I'm sure this has been discussed previously but I didn't pay much attention since at the time it didn't apply to me but I'm 4 weeks post partum and need some information on how to resume NFP.

I read about it in "The Art of NFP" and what I gleaned from it was basically you use the mucus and cervix signs until your period resumes. Is that about it? I'd be interested in knowing what "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" has to say about it too.

"The Art of NFP" preaches ecological breastfeeding for spacing your babies out. However, that's just not an option given the breastfeeding issues we've had (our baby has a cleft lip--a large part of the issues). I do breastfeed but not exclusively.

I had a strong mucus sign before pregnancy so would I definitely have a strong mucus sign post partum too?

Any insight you ladies can offer, I'd love to hear it!!

alright ladies I need your insight. I have not been temping as Dh and I use a barrier every time. I have however been trying to keep a running "diary" of fluids and feelings and moods and such as a way to get to know what my body is doing and what is going on. I'm two months off of BC, my first period off of BC happend at day twenty five off of pills. I had tons of secreations. This month has been a little bit more laid back on the fluids though. I had three seperate rounds of "lotiony" secretions lasting two to three days each. A couple of sticky days thrown in here and there. And then just normal dampness. I'm not sure if I have ovulated this month or not, I got crampy around the time I was expecting it, but I just dont know. Is my body still adjusting to being off the pills? Is this normal?

Kia it took me a year to get my body back to normal. Some women don't take as long, but just know that when coming off of bc just about anything goes!

I think that TCOYF also recommends that you use the mucus/fluid signs and cervical signs. It makes sense because new mothers' sleep patterns are not usually regular, so the temp may be off and not really reliable.

Your mucus may be the same or different and may change, and it might take a bit to figure out what it is like.

My first cycle off birth control, my period started on day 29 (I'm not sure if I ovulated or not because I wasn't temping or checking fluids). The second cycle, I did not ovulate and my period didn't start until day 43. My third cycle, I ovulated on day 53. So yeah, you might just still be adjusting. Everyone is different.

Okay, ladies. Interpretation requested.

My temps put my ovulation at Day 20 (day of strong temp shift); mucus peak day was Day 18. We (ahem) enjoyed each other on Day 19 (walkin' on the wild side! )

I spotted Days 20-23, stopped spotting, but resumed on Days 27-32 (which is today).

I don't usually spot this much. And I take daily vitamins, so it's not breakthrough bleeding caused by a vitamin deficiency.

I stopped temping on Day 24.

Could this be implantation bleeding?

I could just wait a couple more days and see what my period does. My Luteal Phases are typically 11-12 days or so, so I should start my period today or tomorrow.

Could be, Tricia.

Well, time for me to dust off my thermometer, I'm back in the temping game! I started AF today, but only because I'm on hormonal bcp. Since I don't entirely agree with their use in my body but I need them right now for cysts, I'll be temping and we'll be using additional protection during my potentially fertile periods. Once I figure out what my body is going to do on the Nuva Ring(I don't normally O on it) then we'll make a further decision

For the record, it wasn't. I got my period today.

(Or it could've been but didn't... take.)

Wait! A vitamin deficiency can cause breakthrough bleeding/spotting? Can anyone give me more info about that- I've been having really odd spotting for several months now.

Hmmm. I just busted out TAONFP, and its section on breakthrough bleeding doesn't describe what I had. They describe it as before the thermal shift; mine was during (I think ovulatory bleeding) and after.

In the section on Cycle Irregularities, it lists premenstrual spotting. it says it's infrequent during the most fertile years but increases in probability during premenopause. "In women in their fertile years, it's a sign of luteal phase inadequacy. Vitamin supplements designed to improve luteal phase hormones (e.g. Optivite) can be effective in eliminating this premenstrual spotting." (p. 425)

Per page 417, cycle irregularities can be such things as:
- ones that swing from short to long without apparent reason
- cycles that are consistently very long and which have extended discharge of mucus
- cycles with all-the-time mucus that provides no clear Peak Day
- short luteal phases
- anovulatory cucles
- cycles with unusual bleeding episodes.

Causes are generally:
- improper nutrition
- improper body balance (obese or underweight)
- stress
- environment
- something pathological (gland disorders)

Trish --- I get pre-menstrual spotting about every 3-4 months I think. Sometimes just a day, sometimes up to a week long (THAT'S annoying!). I take it as a good sign that I'm going to start soon and I'm healthy. Rarely are they after an unusual cycle ... then again, I don't temp anymore, just look at mucus.

Hmm...none of those sound like me, even when I was charting. I could always tell when I ovulated by the EWCM, and my LP was a good length.

1 - 3 days of pre-menstrual spotting was completely normal for me (since menarche) ... my LP was a good length, CF was easily distinguished, I just spotted a bit. *shrugs* Maybe it's nothing and is just becoming your normal?

I know that it takes a while after going off the the pills to become all straightened out and for my body to readjust. I'm just wondering how long do I wait for AF? Will my body just eventually take care of it, or do I wait a certain amount of time and contact my doctor if she never shows? I know that a "normal" cycle isnt neccssaraly the 28 days, but being new to this no hormonal birth control thing is a little scary for me, because of the risk of it not working, which is okay but not at the same time.... am I making sense? I guess I just want to know after a certain amount of time passes from my last cycle should I be worried about it not working? Or is it just my body still adjusting. I know anything is normal, I just wish it wasnt so up in the air kind of thing.

You could always call your doctor and ask if she thinks you need to come in. Chances are you're still just adjusting, but calling can't hurt. I know for me, I had my yearly visit 3 1/2 months after coming off the pill and I still hadn't ovulated yet. My doctor told me to wait another month or two and if I continued to not ovulate, she was going to do some blood work. I ovulated about two weeks after that visit, so I never had to do any tests.

LOL, I'm sorry, I just felt that that expressed my frustration with this uncertainty. With my pills I always new when AF would arrive, I could plan accordingly and know what to expect. If I was late I knew what the problem was and had little to no uncertainty in the matter. With this way I'm a little bit more anxious about it. If I'm late does that mean I shoudl POAS, wait, how long do I wait, etc. Its all stuff that you guys have been wonderfully answering, but does anyone else not chart and feel lost in the uncertainty of it all? With not using hormonal BC there is a little bit of a higher risk of pregnancy ,the first month AF showed up at a "normal" time for me and I was comfortable with that. Its I guess just the fact that now any time that AF doesnt happen when I think it should its going to drive me absolutely crazy. It sounds like an absolutely wonderful time

Kia- we've been not charting for several months, and plenty of those have been "what's going on here" cycles. Things have been really odd here lately. I deleted a post a few back, but this cycle went 34 days for me (normal is 29-30) and 2 POAS were negative. What I DO keep track of though is when day 1 is for each cycle. I write the date on an index card and hide it in my desk drawer. That way when I get antsy I can figure out what cycle day I am on and if I am late. Lately I have been feeling "lost in the uncertainty" near the end of my cycles, but I try to focus on trusting that God will do what He wants.
