Here is a question Daniel - Is Jason the most senior (most years singing professionally) person to win this award? He has been singing with GV a long time and most people probably expect a relative newcomer to win this type of award.

It looks like the answer is "no." There's at least one tie; Brian Free won the award in 1991 after being on the road 11 years with Gold City. Kenny Bishop won the award in 1992. Other winners include Gerald Wolfe, Jay Parrack, Loren Talley, Scott Fowler.

It looks like people tend to find a favorite and vote them in year after year until they graduate from the category.

Is this a trick question? I had believed he was either 29 or 30, as per the discussion in other threads.

That's no problem. I had just mistakenly assumed that this might be some sort of trick question, to see if I'm really paying attention.

I'm sure this question does not belong here but I am going to ask since you have so much information. I teach a class of teens in a BIBLE Club at my church. I need to find some crafts that boys and girls can do that are something they would like, do not cost a large sum of money, and can be done in a week or two. Any ideas will be welcome.

Thank you for any help you are able to give.

They both recorded it in 2005, so I can't give you a definitive answer. But I think Signature Sound's album came out earlier in the year, so I'd guess it would be Signature Sound.

Let me take that back. I remembered a way to check album dates. Ernie Haase and Signature Sound came out on October 25, 2005, while Give Me That Mountain came out on August 16, 2005. However, those dates are so close that Signature Sound had to have had it in the can before the Kingdom Heirs' version was released.

I have album years for well over 3,000 albums programmed into a database I'm compiling, but as for dates (of recently released CDs), several online stores (including Amazon) will list (occasionally incorrect) dates.

(How's that for a list of qualifiers!)

I read somewhere that you are a songwriter. Have you written any hits? I am getting started with 5 published and 11 pending.

Dear Dr. Daniel:

Do you know who is singing bass for the Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet? My favorite nephew and 5 of his closest friends just returned to Lynchburg, at Liberty University and I am driving to Lynchburg soon to take them all out for dinner and they are going with us (my sister) to hear
OTGH Quartet sing. These young adults have never heard Southern Gospel music and even though my nephew Chris plays piano, his minor, he only plays classical music. He always plays a hymn for me, just one, but I want to encourage him and his friends to embrace Southern gospel. (Meals will help encourage their attendance). Please tell me they hired a great bass singer.

Thanks for your knowledge.

poodles,

I loved the original Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet (2000-2003 version): Robbie Hiner, Wyatt Wilson, Jeff Stanley, and Christian Davis. Christian left in 2003 and was replaced by Jeff Pearles, who is a great bass, good enough that they could go on without skipping a beat.

Then, of course, Robbie and Jeff Pearles left in 2005, and were replaced by Tony Jarman and Jerry Pilgrim (bass). Jeff Stanley (baritone) just left, and Ron Grimes joined the Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet last week.

Typically, when a group has a brand-new member, it takes them a while to get back on their feet and have a polished, smooth group sound. Now Jerry Pilgrim is an okay bass, but I liked Jeff Pearles better and Christian Davis even better than that. That, on top of the fact that they are in the process of regrouping right now, would lead me to suggest that you might try first exposing him to another quartet.

On the other hand, since they pretty much stand still and sing with an orchestral / choral soundtrack, and you said he likes classical music, he might actually like them better than one of the top 5 groups like L5 or EHSS.

But words can only go so far. Why don't you visit their website and watch about seven songs they have on streaming video: http://www.otghquartet.com/index.cfm?PID=11522#StreamingVideo

This is with their old baritone, but it should give you an idea of what they're like.

I hope this helps!

PawPaw, I haven't written any hits yet. Let me re-phrase that--as a songwriter, I guess I always hope that some of the songs I've written will become hits, but none of them have yet. There is one professional group that is considering one of them right now. If they end up recording it, I'll be sure to let you all know, in this thread or in the chat thread.

Daniel, when exactly did the Perrys make the switch between a mixed quartet sound (2 men, 2 women) and a traditional quartet sound (1 woman, 3 men)?

Daniel, how many women in mixed quartets sing the tenor part? Could you name the groups and the women that do this?

Do you mean quartet tenor, in which case I would name people like Libbi Perry Stuffle, Lily Weatherford, and maybe a few others, or do you mean hymnal tenor, in which case I would name people like Reba Rambo, Lauren Talley (I think), and possibly Connie Hopper?

Quartet tenor is a higher range than hymnal tenor, right?

Yes; quartet tenor is generally hymnal alto. (Unless, that is, you refer to Jay Parrack or Ernie Phillips, in which case quartet tenor is easily hymnal soprano and then some, even when they take the alto part.)

Okay. Well, I am quartet tenor, and whether its hymal alto or hymnal soprano depends on the track we use and what key it's in.

Well, what does Libbi Stuffle sing? She is an *alto* but what part is she normally singing when she doesn't do lead?

Hymnal Alto sounds like an old time gospel singer, the kind Bill Gaither always talks about.

(Sorry to interrupt, but I know nothing of technical things and did not want to be left out of the conversation.)
