Latest from Roger from his blog. October 28, 2006 The Best Made Plans of Mice and Men Often Go Awry. I never thought I'd start a post by quoting Steinbeck, but during the last 48 hours, every plan I made was met with a resounding NO! Check this out..... Saturday (today) was to be our first of 3 days of home rest here in Houston. I was so looking forward to it. The weather is beautiful and I wanted to think and see anything but the hospital for 3 days. Not so fast Bennett! Yesterday morning I came in for a simple blood draw and a vital sign check. Still so far so good, then the thermometer had its say. 102.4 I believe is what it read. The staff and M. D. Anderson don't mess around with fever. So I was immediately taken to the ER, where Deb and I stayed for nine hours being treated, taking more tests, waiting for a room. They admitted me at about 8 PM last night. Ok, I thought, I can get over the fever tonight and still be out in the fresh over the weekend. Not so fast Bennett. I was at least 2 units low on blood (which I'm getting as I type). I don't know what the price for a unit of whole blood is, but I feel sure it must cost more than filling up my gas guzzling, global warming SUV. And!!!!, you can't get a Zero candy bar and Dr, Pepper in the mini mart on a protective environment floor. (note to self, have Debbie smuggle up Zero bars and Diet Dr. Pepper)(She's too pretty to go to jail!) Anyway, you have to become flexible, because the Dr.'s are paid not to do shoddy work. (I still want to go home but there it is) I'm doing well and am extremely optimistic about the outcome of these many days of fighting. So now that we are here in Houston full-time, I'll be able to keep up my posting schedule a lot better. When I can't, the best writer/editor that I know will be putting in her 2 cent's worth! What would I do without my Debbie? I hope you all have a great weekend. I can make a money back guarantee about one activity you might be able to attend. Surf over to www.legacyfive.com/concert_schedule and see if the fellows are singing in your area. I promise you will not be disappointed. In the unlikely event that you don't like the concert, ask Scott Fowler for a refund!!! (good luck! ha) Love to all, be of good cheer! Jesus has overcome the world and we who know Him are, In His Grip! Roger

Lots of people get up in the morning, have a cup of coffee, start their day, etc.. Not me, I get up every morning, and check on Roger first thing. Please join me in an effort to strengthen the prayer chain for God's healing mercy with Roger.

**bump** November 01, 2006 Crossing Every T and Dotting Every I We are still moving quickly along toward transplant 3. Most of the big tests are completed. The results have been good. The cancer seems to be contained very well. The plans have been made and we are just moving ahead each day. Saturday (Nov. 4) will be day minus 12. I'll have chemo as an out patient that day. Then I'll be admitted into the hospital on November 10. Then it's all in the hands of God working through some of the best Drs., nurses, and technicians in the world. I'm ready to get this behind me. Deb and I are very optimistic about this new transplant. We have a peace (most days). If I'm honest though I have to tell you that there have been many days and nights during this latest trial when we have not felt so heart-sure. Satan uses physical weakness and mental fatigue to come at us to defeat us. He's not been reading his Bible lately if he thinks we are are going to give up now. We will not lose heart. We will be of good cheer, Jesus has overcome the world so we don't have to! Great news! I'll be in touch as events unfold. In His Grip! Roger

November 07, 2006 Counting Down We have had quite an eventful few days. Seems like Roger has needed platelets and/or blood almost every day lately - we just can't keep his counts up. Therefore, he is very tired and sleeps whenever possible, but the powers that be over at the clinic like to disrupt that cycle with multiple appointments! It is all a part of the process, though, just getting ready for the "big day". We have had some LONG, LONG days leading up to it, I must say. Friday and Saturday were spent with complications making it necessary for us to be over there for hours and hours, and Friday in particular was a pretty painful day for Roger. They were exchanging his CVC (a semi-permanent line implanted as an IV of sorts, to put it simply), and it got lodged in his neck, against a collar bone, and a rib (there are 3 separate lines), and without sedation, they had to go in and reposition it - again, with no small amount of trouble and pain. Then, Saturday, he had another round of chemo pre-transplant, and needed blood and platelets, and we ended up being in the treatment area from 8 am until after midnight. Needless to say, we were sleeping in on Sunday morning. We are grateful that our church has a live internet stream of the Sunday services, and since we slept through that, they have it available for later viewing, as well. OK, so now you know we were backsliding Sunday! We have had the pleasure of meeting new people this week, and some of our friends in the area brought us a huge meal yesterday of good ole Texas brisket with all the trimmings (thank you Willie and Sandy Wilson!). They always bring plenty to freeze for later, so we will be eating well for a while. Meanwhile, our dear friends the Templetons are in town for Maurice's check-up, so we will have a nice dinner with them tomorrow. We are trying to do all that Roger feels like doing before his loooooong confinement, without tiring him out too much. We have been stockpiling books and computer programs for his entertainment while in the hospital. Thanks for keeping us in your prayers. On the days when we feel we just don't have the strength to do this again, we get a gentle push from above, and we feel those prayers coming our way. You all are so faithful to remember us and we don't take that for granted - ever. Those prayers are ways to remind us that we are securely In His Grip! Debbie

This is from the L5 eletter. Even though there are still funds to take care of Rogers medical bills, it's always a good idea too add to it!!! Message from Scott Fowler... Many of you have inquired about the status of the Roger Bennett Benefit Fund. Presently, there are still plenty of funds in the account for Roger's needs. Please rest assured that in the event that changes, I will let you all know. Thanks for being concerned about it. Thanks, Scott

Another update from the blog. I think the transplant date is still Nov. 16. . . . . A Big Day/A New Address Well, today is the day Roger goes into the hospital. We expect it to be sometime tonight, since they wait for discharges to be completed. Meanwhile, we head back over at 7 am today for another platelet infusion. I am going to have to get back to the blood donor room and begin donating platelets again. It just takes a while, and I have not had the time yet. I can't say we haven't dreaded this day to some extent. Knowing what you face can sometimes make the process more difficult than it was the first time. Please pray specifically today that Roger will NOT be on Floor 12. While we get the greatest of care there, it is the Protective Environment, and it is extremely confining. We are hoping for Floor 11, where there is a measure of (relative) freedom......i.e., fewer masks, gloves, shoe covers, and the ability to walk around the nurse's station when he feels able, etc., etc....Otherwise, he is confined to his room for the 3 weeks + that he is in there. At least, we hope if he IS on Floor 12, that he will get a room with a window! Okay, so we know his new address for the duration, but I finally was able to go and get a mail box, so I have an address for those of you who asked. This will be our mailing address while we are in Houston this time. It is: ROGER AND DEBBIE BENNETT 2260 W. HOLCOMBE BLVD., #314 HOUSTON, TX 77030 Some of you may realize the similarity to our last address. I chose a place that is pretty convenient to the drive to and from the hospital. Not to mention that they have a bulldog as a mascot, so I get to pet a puppy head when I go in there! (That may have been more of a draw than the other, truth told....) Gotta run, time for a shower and then it's off to the clinic again. It will be a busy day, getting packed and filling out papers. Feeling kind of nervous, but still firmly In His Grip, Debbie

Update from Debbie: November 12, 2006 Settled in for the Duration Our prayers were answered....Roger got to be in a room on Floor 11 - WITH a window! So far, things are progressing well. He has had 2 rounds of chemo, a couple of blood infusions, platelets, medications, etc., etc. and is tolerating it all well. He will have a few more days of chemo, and the stem cell transplant itself will take place either next Sat. or Sun., depending on the timing of the arrival of the donor cells. Please pray for his donor during this crucial week. What a selfless act he is performing, giving the gift of life to a totally anonymous person. We could make several comparisons there to what our whole Christian existence is about, hmm........ We just finished having church via internet, and it was, as usual, a great sermon. I have to confess that I was rushing, trying to get here, get hooked up online, etc., and I was not in the proper frame of mind to go to church. I am thankful that God is able to get around my attitude and still bless me in spite of it. I will try to be more patient with my circumstances, and quit trying to orchestrate them so much. It works out much better when I allow God to be in charge!!! Until next time, we are still happily In His Grip, Debbie

Wow --- Roger feels well enough to be sending us a LONG message: News from the Front Lines Hey Folks, First I want to think Debbie for keeping you up to date. I love to read her posts and many times when I'm not up to it, she stands in the gap for me. Thanks Dobra (don't ask) The title of tonight's post is really a double subject. True, I'm on the front lines personally getting ready for my transplant. By the way, I start my fourth day of chemo tomorrow and have yet to be sick. Thank God for His blessings. I had a staff member walk into my room this afternoon I was sitting in a chair working on a computer problem and he looked and said, "when the patient gets back can you have him call me?" I said, "You're looking at the patient!" It made my day. I feel fine and am grateful to be held tightly in my Father's hand. Now, on to the other front line story. As I've mentioned before, when in the hospital, the TV pretty much is locked down on the History Channel, I can't get enough. During my last transplant it was the Food Network. But this time it's the History Channel hands down. If you've watched it at all you know that many of the documentaries are about various wars down through the centuries. My interest lies in the WW 2 era. I know so many people who served and endured hardships too gruesome to print here. I'm always struck by the youthful faces carrying their gear, marching into the literal most dangerous event of their young life. I can't help to get misty eyed when I think about all the brave young men and women who gave all in defense of our way of life. From the Revolutionary War to WW 1 & 2, to Korea and Vietnam, Bosnia, and both Gulf Wars, so many answered the call of their country. My Dad's only brother was a Jr. Joseph Emerson Bennett Jr. to be exact. He was drafted in WW 2. He was trained in England for heavy armament duty. By all accounts he was very good at it. But when it came down for him to get into the fighting, some superior decided that Jr. Bennett was needed more at the front lines. He was to fight hand to hand combat. In the last letter his parents received he told them that he wouldn't be coming home and that he loved them very much. Prophetic words. He was killed a few weeks later in the Battle of the Bulge. A kid 20 years old (my son's age) cut down in the most terrible way. As you can imagine it devastated our family. My Dad has his photo on the wall at home and I never pass it that I don't say thanks in my heart to the uncle I never knew for defending a nephew that he would never know. War is horrible no matter when it occurs in History. The weapons are just more advanced, but the young men and women are the same as generations before them. They knew that death was inches away, but they fought on. I'm sure many had the same premonition as Uncle Jr. that they two would not be coming home, yet they fought on. We are in a war no less deadly than previous ones. But this time we are not fighting an army that you can see. We are fighting a foe that gleefully sends out men, women, even little boys and girls to blow up as many people as they can. They have been trained since early childhood that martyrdom is the ultimate wish. The thought of "home grown" terrorists should bring a chill to the heart of each person that treasures freedom. Lord help us. Before I close, let me tell you my latest lesson learned about the front lines. Christians are in a conflict much more dangerous than any physical conflict, we are fighting for souls. Satan has pulled out his most effective lie so far. Political Correctness. It is quickly destroying not only our language, but is effectively keeping Christians mouths closed lest they be labeled a hate monger. Elton John made headlines this week by saying if it was up to him, all religion would be banned! He elaborated, "Religion produces hateful people." He's right about many so called religions, but he's dead wrong about the redeemed body of Christ around this world. Religion has be used as justification for untold deaths since the beginning of time. I shudder when I see misguided people do the most terrible things in the name of God. But there is a Church that will never be stopped. This Church that Christ built by defeating death and offering ALL people a way of escape from our sins. The Church I'm talking about are the ones that quietly go about the work of caring for the "least of these". This Church around the world that live with persecution every day, yet still meet together to worship the Lord and share salvation's plan against the penalty of death. That's the Church that you rarely see on TV. It's not good TV to show a man who loads his truck to overflowing and heads to the poorest area he knows to share physical blessings, but also the words of life that our Saviour secured for us. That's boring TV according to the producers. But they are ever on the look out for a pastor falling away from his calling. They are plugged in when someone in the church steals money, or a myriad of other burn outs. Now THAT's great TV. My encouragement to you is to realize that we are on the enemies' ground. We are most assuredly on the spiritual front lines. But the Lord reminds me that we are not of this world and he will stay with us even until the end of the age. The battle cry should be, "Wake Up!!" the time for slumber is over. We've got the message of life not death and we need to take God's message as serious as our enemies do their religion of hateful murder. But instead of plotting to kill and mame whenever possible, our plan is much better....Jesus loves you so much that He died for you that you should not perish! Now that's something to take with us in our daily battle on the front lines for the salvation of the world. In His Grip! Roger

When I heard about Roger's first transplant, I went and registered to be a bone marrow donor. I haven't been called yet, but it would have been super to have been a donor for him. Don't you think it would be a nice tribute to Roger if people on the forums would register and then send him a note letting him know how he has been such an inspiration? You can check it out at www.marrow.org
