Lycurgus -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/13/2007 6:08:36 AM)

Hey guys, wow this is really cool I just found these forums a few days ago and its awesome to see a thread about mma.

First off, I am an "ultimate fighter". I've been competing in the sport for 3 yrs now and have 5 fights with a 5-0 record. And yes Im a christian and believe absolutely in the power, grace and strength of God and that is what allows me to get in a ring without fear, without reservation, ready to fight and die even. Why? Because God put this desire in my heart as a man.....to FIGHT. And the fruit of this journey down a warriors path has only made me closer to my God and savior Yeshua.

Its so cool to see others interested in mma and so I think they can understand the heart behind why I chose this. I had to fight because it was what I was afraid of most. When I was in high school I was jumped at a party and had post traumitc stress because of the incident. WHen I got older I realized the fear of others doing physical harm to me was clouding my judgment and holding me in subjugation to its will. So when I gave my life to the Lord I made a decision to trust HIM no matter what! And for me that meant doing what I was afraid of most but deep down smoldering was my desire burning to fight and be a warrior. So I started training and a year later had my 1st fight ( will show website that has fights below). Now this was a defining moment in my life for walking in faith and believing in the impossible. Let me tell you I did not believe in myself for a long time because I was brainwashed by american pop culture and ignorant people, so this was it for me.........I had to be ready to give it all and fight with ALL of my heart. So I sat silent and I remember thinking " I dont know who this guy is(my opponent) and you know what I dont care, God is all I have. Im not giving up and Im not goin down." And thats all I told myself. Turns out my opponent was undefeated and I was not expected to win. I mean this guy was tough as nails. So the video kinda sucks for that fight but it was my 1st and it was a WAR! I almost knocked him out like 5 secs in and from then on we are just going at it. That was my first fight! I ended up winning by split decision and I learned one amazing lesson that only comes from your blood falling on the battlefield...........respect. For me and my opponent, we just went to war and after its over we have nothing but RESPECT and honor for each other. I never knew what that truly felt like till that day....
YOu can check out all my fights and some training and sparring clips at www.myspace.com/righteousfury05 My 1st fight the one I was talking about is listed there its the african- american guy as my opponent. So check em out guys!

I just skimmed this thread but this guy Tim somethin seems to be a real judgemental jerk. So I just wanna say Tim, now that you have a man who is a Christian and a fighter on this very thread how will YOU tell me I need to be living my life? And when will you start living your own?

lilyofthefield -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/13/2007 4:37:14 PM)

Hey Lycurgus,

Glad you found us! Cool site - you really bloodied that one guy up. [sm=icon_smile_dead.gif]

As for Tim, I'm sure he has good intentions, but as someone else mentioned, there is a morality/ethics section for those kind of debates. [;)]

Well, guys, I missed whatever the thing was last night with Dana and Tito, but I think it is being aired again tonight. I am still doubting it will actually be a fight. All I heard was they both got boxing licenses, but that Tito ended up not showing... I'll see tonight I guess. Have a great weekend!

Hiker02 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/13/2007 9:10:28 PM)

Hi Lycurgus

Those were some pretty impressive fights I saw up to the third fight so far. Do you have a wrestling background? You look pretty comfortable on the mat and you had a good single leg takedown in your 3rd fight. Keep us updated on your upcoming fights.[:D]

As for Tim I agree with lilyofthefield, his intentions (even though I might disagree with them) are probably good.

I haven't seen anything about the White/Ortiz fight either. I looked on Sherdog and didn't find anything so I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Lycurgus -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/13/2007 9:34:15 PM)

Hey hiker, I didnt really have any background before I started training mma. I had a year of kung fu before that. The mma training I recieved was top notch though and there were many talented people that I learned from. Thanks for the compliments on the fights. I'm comfortable on the ground but actually I prefer to stand and throw. My fav art is dutch muay thai.....very effective.

chemdude77 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/13/2007 11:10:31 PM)

Welcome Lycurgus! Nice to have a Christian MMA fighter. Good to read your blogs. Are you training full time?

Dutch Muay Thai is pretty intense. I remember two Dutch K1 fighters, Ernesto Hoost and Peter Aerts..

Lycurgus -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/14/2007 4:25:14 PM)

Hey chemdude, currently I am training about 4-5 days a week. I seperated my shoulder back in Nov. and am still rehabbing from that. I cant do any BJJ or wrestling right now because of that but what I have been doing is alot of boxing so that has been cool.

As Christians we are called to search the scriptures for truth. You did not post anything from the Bible that says Fighting is ok. "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, WHETHER THOSE THINGS WERE SO."
(Acts 17:11)

Instead you've resorted to name calling which isn't Biblical either.

One of the most misunderstood and misapplied verses in the Bible is Matthew 7:1, "Judge not, that ye be not judged".

Webster’s Dictionary defines judge as 1. The presiding official in a court having power 1. To decide 2. To determine; (Webster’s Dictionary p.330)

Where did I say you're going to Hell if you watch the UFC! I obviously can't send people to Heaven or Hell.

I said it isn't Biblical and Christians shouldn't watch it.

If we do not "judge" or "decide" – "right" from "wrong" by the word of God, how do we even know what is "right" or what is "wrong"?

We go to the Bible, which is the word of God.

The Bible over and over COMMANDS us to "judge".

"Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment"
John 7:24

"But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man."
1 Corinthians 2:15

"I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say" (1 Corinthians 10:15).

The Lord Jesus Christ commanded "judging":

"Judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24)

"Why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? "(Luke 12:57).

The Lord Jesus Christ commended Simon in Luke 7:43 for "judging" and Jesus Christ said Simon was "right" for judging:

"And he said unto him, Thou hast RIGHTLY judged" (Luke 7:43).

Paul even "rebukes" the Corinthian church for NOT "judging"!

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not YE JUDGE them that are within?

To all you Christians who read this.

God Bless.

lilyofthefield -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/16/2007 10:53:47 AM)

So I watched the thing on Dana and Tito... a big letdown really. So, Tito insisted in his contract that he get to fight Dana. Dana went with it, spent 6 months training, had medicals, had to get the fight sanctioned... then Tito doesn't show to weigh-in, calls Dana and says he's "letting him of the hook". Dana didn't really want to fight him, but did what was necessary - that was not cool of Tito. Oh well.

Looks like Team Pulver is "pulverizing" team Penn... [;)]

Lycurgus -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/16/2007 4:27:41 PM)

Well Tim to answer your ridiculous analogy about having fights in church, don't you know that people go to church to worship God?

Thats why they have Vegas. So people can go and watch fights!

Of course I know people go to Church to worship God.

Las Vegas is called Sin City. Why any professing Christian would want to go to a city named after the very thing that Jesus Christ died for and be entertained by fights, is beyond me.

Fighting, Boxing, UFC whatever is violence pure and simple, controlled or not controlled, it is still violence, whether condoned or not condoned.

Isaiah 59: 6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

Genesis 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

Ezekiel 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

Luke 3:14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

To all the Christians who read this.

God bless.

Is anyone else watching Ultimate Figher??? I do get disgusted with some of the behavior, but I like to know who the guys actually are before they fight. I'm happy team Pulver is doing well so far. BJ Penn gets on my nerves. I mean, he's got so much natural talent - but it bugs me that he is so lazy. If he got in good condition I think he'd be pretty near untouchable!!

Good post bro, I agree with you completely. God bless.

Last night I watched the first half hour of it and wasn't all that impressed. There seemed to be a lot of "acting" for the camera instead of just training, but that was the first episode I have seen so I might be completely off base. I am hopeing to see the actual fight tonight.

chemdude77 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/21/2007 12:32:28 AM)

The producers could have cut out 30' of the episode. Alot of the nonsense had NOTHING to do with MMA.

Good news for UFC fans--On Sat, April 21st, UFC 70 is on TV (free). Michael Bisping, Cro Cop, Andre Arlovski on the card...

chemdude77 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/22/2007 3:12:45 AM)

From UFC70 in Manchester:

Gabriel Gonzaga knocked Cro Cop out with a tremendous kick to the head. Gonzaga is a fantastic BJJ specialist (and a fantastic striker)....

Andre Arlovski won a very boring fight...

Randy Couture faces Gonzaga in a title defense.

Lycurgus -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/22/2007 5:20:26 AM)

Wow I cant believe Crop cop got knocked out like that! What an upset. Gonzaga looked good though. Maybe him and Couture will be a good matchup. I think Cro cop got too lackadaisical(sp?) in his gameplan and relied on his left head and liver kick too much. He got caught sleepin and this has happened to him before in k-1 vs Michael Mcdonald. Oh well I just had high hopes for him. He can still come back.

I have to say I was completely shocked too and it wasn't like it was just one lucky kick because Gonzaga was dominating the fight from the opening bell.

I also think Cro Cop might have underestimated his opponent, but cudos to Gonzaga for taking full advantage of it.[sm=thumbsup.gif]

I didn't get to see the Arlovski fight but from what my brother said it was a very boring fight. I don't know what has happened to him lately, but he just doesn't look as dominating as he has in the past. Who knows the two losses to Sylvia might have hurt is confidence a bit.

We record it with DVR and watch later so we can fast-forward through much of the "junk". Otherwise, I think it would be a lot harder to watch!

I thought it was interesting that Couture believed Gonzaga would beat Cro Cop. He also thought Gonzaga would be a tougher opponent for himself than Mirko. There have been some very interesting upsets lately, haven't there? [:D]

If you guys want to discuss the morality/righteousness of MMA (UFC, Pride, IFL, etc.), there's now a post up at the morality forum.

Enjoy!

I trained with Royce and Rorion and Rickson Gracie way back in the day b4 UFC even existed and they got famous. So obviously i watched the first few UFCs which were flawed by design. It is alot better now, but i dont get to watch it much these days.

That must have been fun.[:D] You must have learned a great deal from them. I take it you have a Ju-Jitsu background?

I have to agree the UFC has gotten much better as time has progressed. These days anything can happen no matter who is fighting. That is what makes the MMA so fun to watch![:D]

chemdude77 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (4/27/2007 4:02:27 PM)

Cesar Gracie's school in Northern California trains a few MMA fighters, including Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, Dave Terrell...

Hiker02 -> RE: Any UFC Fans??? (5/22/2007 9:53:02 PM)

Anyone looking forward to the Liddell/Jackson fight? I can't wait. I think it should be a great fight.

I watched the first fight and Liddell just didn't look like he was into the fight. He looked totally winded after about 3 minutes and really didn't look like he wanted to be there. This fight should be different because he has something to prove which is why it should be a good fight.

I think Liddell will win it by knockout.
