Just stopped in to say that I have gone 400 days without tobacco. Life is so much better without being a slave to something that would eventually kill me if I used it as it's intended! I will soon celebrate my second 4th of July completely free of tobacco. Now is a great time to LET FREEDOM RING for you if you still use that killer weed. It's like eating an elephant: You can't do it all at once, but it's possible to eliminate it if you deal with it a little bit a time. One crave, one hour, one day at a time to be free from nicotine...

Well, I wanted to join in here as I too struggle from this addiction....I recently went to the Dominican Republic with a missions team from my church for a week (Jun 9-16, 2007), there were two of us who smoked and we both went that whole week "smoke-free". We were so engulfed in what the Lord wanted us to do that we really didn't think much about smoking. HOWEVER< when we got back that is when the struggle really began for us...She caved in at the airport and I soon followed. Now I'm back smoking the way I was before....this really sucks! I found that my biggest problem was the "reward" factor and when stress came up, the cigarette is where I found "peace"...lol How awful is that? Anyway, I wanted to jump on this thread and start it back up again as I know there are probably people right now who could benefit from this forum! LIKE ME!! I want to quit so bad, I've prayed and prayed, tried the patch and the lozenges and the gum....About five years ago I went 2 1/2 years smoke-free and then so bad stuff happened to me and I resorted back to nicotine as my solstice! How does anyone feel about Zyban? I am thinking of using this option now.

I don't know anything about Zyban, but I used the generic nicotine gum for 97 days - way too long, I know, but at least it helped put some mental distance between tobacco and me. When I finally threw away the gum, I went through full withdrawal symptoms for about 5 days. While caving under stress is quite common - I did it myself once after a year quit, returning to nicotine doesn't make the problem go away nor does it fix the problem. All it ever does is feed the nicotine addiction. A support group of fellow quitters is probably 1000 times better than any quiting "aid."

When I first mentioned anywhere on a Salem forum that I was quitting a 30 year addiction to tobacco, it had only been 15 days since I had thrown away the nicotine gum and I was still struggling. Today, due to God's grace and strength, I have been off tobacco for 328 days and free from nicotine for 425 days (a year and 60 days). While the first 3 days were toughest and the first few weeks required constant vigilance, the only time I even think of tobacco is when I share with someone else trying to quit that the addiction, with God's grace, can be controlled. It is not only glorious to be free from nicotine's control, it is an enormous blessing to be able to share the Gospel with someone else without the shame of knowing than I'm a slave to a chemical.

I have been a smoker for about six years now. Not a heavy smoker. A pack usually lasts me two days or more. I am perfectly fine around friends who dont smoke, at Church, away at Church camp, when I am working with the babies (Im a nanny). But when I am alone, that is when the cravings really start. I have tried countless times to quit. It is a crutch that I have used for so long. I managed to quit for about eleven months before, but then something devestating happened and I was right back smoking again. I have given it over to God more times than I can remember. And I would be free and clear of them for weeks, or even months on end. But then something would happen in life that I could not deal with and I would turn right back to "leaning on my crutch" again. I keep telling myself after this pack is gone, I will quit. Then I buy another one and the cycle starts all over again. I dont really like the smell of it and the taste isnt that great. I need to quit for health reasons, I have asthma. But I want to quit for God. Because I know that I am damaging my body---His temple. It is so hard. I just happened to visit this folder this evening and this thread caught my eye. I sat here and read most of the pages and I am very inspired. Jim---congratulations on making it over a year! Praise God for all of you who have succeeded and for all of you who are currently struggling with this battle. You are all in my prayers! God is an amazing God! He will give us all the strength that we need to kick this nasty habit! God bless! lizzie

It has been over twenty four hours since I have had my last cigarrette. The withdrawl symptoms arent bad. Im not irritable or anything like that. I have noticed within the past couple of hours that I have gotten very shaky and weak. I'm not sure if this is from no cigarrettes or from stress from another situation that happened today. I have decided to go cold turkey. Yes, I have Nicorrette Gum in my bedroom, but I dont want to become dependent on that now. If the craving is too intense or just wont go away, then I may have one. I have been chewing hot cinnamon gum (big red) I have been playing with rubber bands ---so that my hand have something specific to do. I have a very good friend that I asked to keep me accountable. Her husband quit smoking about four years ago, and she watched her father struggle for many years before finally being able to quit. So I have asked her to help keep me accountable. She knows that if I get a super strong craving that wont go away, I may be calling her for some support. Any suggesstions or advice as to how I can overcome this thing faster? God bless all of you who have succeeded. And a special blessing on all of you who are still struggling with this. I know that together with god, we will make it! blessings, lizzie

I have heard about snapping the rubber band. I have used it to help with another issue, but I will try it to quit smoking, too. I remember all too well the pain and sting of a harsh snap against my wrist. It helped me overcome the physical part of the other issue, so I am praying that it will help with the physical part of this too. Thank you for all of the advice and prayers. One day at a time, sometimes one hour at a time, sometimes, one craving, one moment at a time. But, by the grace of God, I will overcome this. He will give me the spiritual and emotional strength. I thank all of you for your advice and prayers. lizzie

Just stopped by to praise the Lord that He has helped me remain 449 days free of Tobacco and 352 days free of nicotine. For a while, I had to learn to live without tobacco. Then I had to learn to live without nicotine. It recently occurred to me that now I simply live - and enjoy my freedom. Today is a great day to not be a slave to a noxious, poisonous, addictive product!!!

I am praising God with you, JimboFletch! I have not had a cigarrette since I posted on here that I was quitting! I have had a few pieces of Nicorrette gum when things got really difficult. I have used the rubber band for a while, but not in the past few days. Cinnamon gum and Orbit gum are much tastier and work better. When I do have the Nicorrette gum, I get all shakey and nauseous, so I dont use it very ofte. Overall, I am doing very well with it. All the praise and glory goes to God!!!! To those of you who are still smoking and are trying to quit, you can do it! God will give you the strength and blessing that you need. I know that He is with me. Praise God! love and blessings, lizzie

A story is told about a boy who spent many long hours crafting a toy sailboat. When it was finished, he tied a string to its bow and launched it into a gentle river. A sudden storm came up and after a brief struggle, the string broke and the sailboat was carried away and out of sight. A few days later, while walking home from school, the boy spotted his beloved boat in a hobby store window. When he rushed in to claim it, the owner expressed his pity on the boy but said he had purchased the boat and would not part with it unless his asking price was paid in full. For the next several months the boy took every odd job he could find and, when he had accumulated enough for the boat, returned and bought it. Walking home the boy could be heard expressing joyously, "YOU'RE TWICE MINE! I built and, then, I bought you back!" This story is often told to express in a small way what God did for us through His Son Jesus, but in another sense it could also be about us. We usually call ourselves QUITTERS, and we are, but we are also BEGINNERS. We were given the gift of life but sold a major part of its control to nicotine. But now we are working in any and every way possible to take control of our life again. Freedom is twice ours, once by birth and, now, through God's grace, diligent effort and support of friends. So we are beginning a new life without the chains forged by nicotine!

I quit smoking 12yrs ago, PTL! My husband tried numerous times, and just recently went on a prescription called Ciantix. It is what finally helped!!! He's been smoke free over 2 months now. *dances a jig. He took the prescription for 1 1/2months. It wasnt cheap, but if you look at cigs being $5 a day and the prescription was $110 a month, we actually saved. Now we can rejoice at the monthly savings from here on out :)

Oops sorry Jimbo. Yes, that's what I meant. He was only on the prescription for 1 1/2 months, then went off. I dont' remember the exact dates but I'd say he's been 3 weeks w/o the prescription and has not smoked. Says he doesnt even want one, although there are his certain times, the habit still makes him think about it.

Hello everyone, I have a situation that maybe you all can help me with. A friend at work has just found out that she is pregnant with her 2nd child. She smokes and smoked throughout her first pregnancy. She says she wants to quit but tried and failed when she was pregnant the first time. The rest of our co-workers do not know that she is pregnant. She says that she is embarrased for everyone to see her smoking and know that she is pregnant. How can I help her? So far, I have just listened. Is there anything else I can do or say?

Today marks Day 365 for me without nicotine in my body (462 without tobacco). I won't kid you, days 1-3 are especially tough, with days 4 & 5 only slightly better. But it has been very worth enduring withdrawal and adapting to a life without the chains forged by nicotine. It can only happen when a person wants freedom more than they want to feed the Nicotine Slave Master's ceaseless appetite for just one more. With God's grace, support, and a will to succeed, there's no reason anyone cannot make it one crave, one day at a time.

I'm still figuratively eating that elephant one bite at a time. Today marks day 400 without nicotine and 497 without tobacco. I've heard it said that if you will take the first step in faith believing when God calls you to a task then He will provide the strength to continue the journey to completion. If you are still using tobacco then you can be sure that God is calling you to lay it down - for He did not call us to become slaves to a Nicotine Master. He called us into a life of liberty in Christ and an abundant life in Him.

I have posted in here before...a long time ago...so there may be a new thread by now...I can't remember when it was... Anyway, I posted about my mom...a long time smoker and had told what all I had tried to get her to stop, and she never would. I asked for ideas or tips on what I could do, say to help her, and you all told me that there wasn't really anything I could do...that when she was ready, it would be her decision. Her doctor recently told her that cigarettes were killing her. He gave her some meds for about three weeks or so, and she's not smoked now in 9 weeks!!!!! Praise the Lord! I am so excited and so surprised. She said that she doesn't even want to be around smokers anymore...she can't stand it. Praise the Lord. I am so happy. She sounded so much different. She wasn't raspy in her voice, and didn't cough the whole time we were on the phone...very, very rare. Thank you all for your support, and please pray for her continued "recovery." BTW, she had been smoking for well over 20 years. I am 29, and I can remember when she started...I was around 5...give or take. Also, she has gained 13 pounds. She says that food tastes so much better, and she just wants to eat and eat...
