ORIGINAL: myckey I wasn't sure where to post this. Mods feel free to change as long as links are correct. I know of a few people here that are looking to/trying to quit smoking. I think we need a support thread where we can encourage each other without being browbeaten for smoking. I have been smoking for the better part of 23 years. I tried to quit again today. It's sickening, I give up after a few hours. I don't understand why it's so hard. Please anyone else who is struggling please post. Do you smoke the brand that Jesus likes? He IS in you, being a believer, so He's puffin' right along too...

Today is my Wedding Anniversary. It is my 2nd one in a row nicotine-free! Is the battle worth it? Absolutely! One crave, one day at a time does pay off. One day you awake with life on your mind instead of tobacco. Like mine this morning. The very first time tobacco entered my thoughts was after I arrived at work and came to this site before the day begins to post in this thread. If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet, don't despair, just follow those who can see it. Eventually, you will find too that you are with those of us who have left the tunnel and are now enjoying the sunlight where tobacco has lost all of its allure and Freedom is a reality. A freedom that can only be lost by believing the lie that tobacco can ever be used casually or that it somehow can fix or make anything better. Day 525 Nicotine-free, day 622 tobacco-free!

Bringing the thread back....Me and hubby are quitting May 10th. We're getting some patches and following the BecomeAnEx.org program. I'm excited and nervous! My mom quit Monday, which really inspired me.

Yay, Roberta! Have you been taking any steps to get there? I took a little quiz on BecomeAnEx.org, and it said I ought to separate my triggers (coffee, after meals, boredem) from smoking for a couple weeks and track my cigarettes, and what triggered them before I pick a quit date. But, I picked one anyway. It's the next non-rent check so we can afford to buy some patches. After my mom told me she was going to quit, I looked on the internet to find some resources for her to help her. And, I saw the TV commercial for the website. Another thing that made me want to quit was the fact that my 2.5 year old went in my jacket pocket (which he never did before) got my cigarettes out and put one in his mouth. I felt horrible! If me and hubby can quit then, our kids will never remember me, hubby or grandma smoking, and maybe they won't grow up to be smokers. Another thing I hate is when the kids get upset because I go on the porch without them to smoke. Or, they are sick of sitting in the car waiting for us to finish our cigarettes before we get in. Another thing I hate is that I've basically been lying by omition to my crosswalk lady friends about my smoking!

I did the math, and I figured out that during the hours my kids are awake, I spend between 50 minutes and an hour smoking. That is an hour I could be spending with them. Instead, I'm outside smoking and trying to make faces at them through the window to keep them happy.

NRT? Is that the patch? I do know that I am addicted to the other chemicals in the cigarette, hence the reason I'm not satisfied if I smoke one of my mom's. She smoked Virginia Slims, and I smoke Camel Lights. My dad quit with the patch 8 years ago, started with the 21mg, then 14mg then 7mg. I don't think I'm strong enough to go without the patch. At least it will give me that little something I need to keep going. Men and women are quite different when it comes to addiction. I don't think our will power is as strong as men's on average.

NRT = Nicotine Replacement Therapy. It includes the patch, gum, & lozenges. Different brands of cigarettes have different amounts of nicotine. That's why smoking one brand may not satisfy.

My mom did away with her "triggers" when she quit a few years ago. She has stayed away from them. My pastor recommended not only getting rid of the "triggers" but replacing them with some healthy habits. Some "triggers" you can't get rid of though, like meals or waking up in the morning.

Some "triggers" you can't get rid of though.... The list can be almost endless, any activity where nicotine played a routine part. Some of them catch you off guard. But as you face and deal with each trigger, you reprogram your brain to enjoy or survive another situation without nicotine. Like many before me, I discovered that nicotine never helped solve or improve anything. All it ever did was feed and temporarily gratify the Nicotine Slave Master's insatiable hunger for control. Day 596 Nicotine-free, day 693 tobacco-free!

Yeah, the triggers are endless. I'm charting my smokes for a couple days, then I'll begin to separate them from smoking. This morning my chart says "0730" as the time and "waking up" as the trigger. The program I'm using claims I can still have my triggers if I can separate them from smoking. I may end up having to switch to tea or Pepsi instead of coffee just for a little while though, since that's my biggest trigger. One thing my dad did was brush his teeth right after every cup of coffee. When I begin to separate, I think I might do that. Hey, I never did say congratulations on your success with quitting smoking, Jimbo. I heard the two year mark is when people usually never pick it back up.

Yes it is very hard to quit smoking. I look at every minute that I don't chain smoke as a blessing. I am a nervous type of person. When I get stressed out I smoke a cigarette. People at church have tried to hurt my feeling but I KNOW if God has taken the desire for cigarettes away from others, I know he will do it for me. I know in this fleshly body there will always be sin until the day I die. No one can be perfect otherwise we would not have needed Jesus to die for us. I am trying very hard to do the will of him that called me. It has helped a lot now that it is warmer outside. I am able to plant and tend 3 small gardens and that does help. While I am busy cigarettes does not come to mind. May God smile upon us both and grant us this blessing.

...but I KNOW if God has taken the desire for cigarettes away from others, I know he will do it for me. I don't want to be a downer, Sharon, but I hoped for the better part of 30 years that God would miraculously remove my addiction to nicotine, but He never chose to do so. Even watching a grandfather and two uncles die from lung cancer didn't snap me out of my slavery. And it deeply troubled me that I didn't live what I "preached" to other's about God's faithfulness. Then I realized His conviction that He didn't want me enslaved was all that He was going to give me until I took the step of faith and allowed Him to help me become free. Initially, I tried nicotine gum. That lasted 97 days and I was still not free, I was just using a different delivery system. One day, I got tired of being a slave to nicotine and began thinking about all that I had sacrificed and continued to sacrifice to keep feeding my addiction. Before I knew it, an hour had passed without my feeding the monster within, so I got a piece of paper and wrote a 1 and the date/time. I carried that paper with me and added to it for 120 hours. By then, all the nicotine had left my system and I had Closed The Door on nicotine - I would deal with each crave any way I could except with nicotine - and I committed to remain free each day. He was with me and provided enough strength for each step of the way. Today is Day 601 nicotine-free for me. No secret or magical methods were required. Just one crave, one hour, one day at a time. The price you pay today in discomfort now will soon reap HUGE rewards in freedom! Give Him the first hour and He will take you through the rest. God revealed my need to become free so that I could be a better servant. He provided the strength I needed each step of the way. And it is approaching two years since I've had to plan any event or trip around the availbility of nicotine and ample opportunity to feed the addiction.

Yay, Sarah! I skimmed over the whole thread and saw you cheerleading for a while, and I was hoping you would come back and do it. Thanks for your prayers. Only 16 days left of me and hubby smoking. I'm still feeling pretty confident. It's been really hard to wait 15 minutes after my coffee to smoke. But, I've been doing it for three days now. I've also been waiting a half hour after I eat to go smoke too. Those are my two biggest triggers I think. I can always quit coffee if it gets too hard, but I can't quit eating LOL! Today, when we left to go shopping I got the kids in the car, and I so badly wanted to smoke before I got in the car, but I didn't. By the time we were done at Freddy's I was ready, but I waited until after we got home and I made lunch for my oldest. It was hard. But, I did it, and I bet I can do it better when I have the patch on. I didn't realize I have so many triggers. Finishing a task, making dinner that doesn't require stirring for 5 minutes, knowing the kids won't be happy for long so I better get a smoke in before they want something, hubby going out for a smoke, neighbor talking to me from outside my kitchen window smoking, getting ready to get in the car, coffee, eating, before bed, waking up, hearing stuff going on outside makes me want to go outside and if I'm outside I might as well smoke, it goes on and on. My hubby was wondering how you keep yourself busy while you're driving. He smokes in his work truck and realizes that when he quits, he can't just play a video game while driving or something.

Just a note on cafeine: Nicotine halves the effect of cafeine so, when you quit, it's like doubling its effects. I didn't know this at first and thought I was having hard craves when it was mostly from being zinged-out on too much coffee. For several weeks I used half water, half coffee until my system settled down. If you're drinking decaf, you're good to go and don't have to worry with that tidbit!

Hi I am quitting on May 1st I know some people say you shouldn't pick a quit date just do it. But I think that building up to the quit date is a better way for me.

Yay, Sarah! I skimmed over the whole thread and saw you cheerleading for a while, and I was hoping you would come back and do it. Thanks for your prayers. Only 16 days left of me and hubby smoking. yeah I was before we moved from Germany, then life got hectic and I quit coming over here so much and forgot about this thread...then it kind of died. But I will for sure be here to cheer you on!!!! 16 days left huh....well, that's 16 days of opportunities to cover your whole lives in prayer!!!! I don't know if this works or not, but a friend swears by fruit juice (esp citrus juice)...she says that cigarettes taste horrible after drinking the juice so you don't want to taste that as much. quote:
Those are my two biggest triggers I think. I can always quit coffee if it gets too hard, but I can't quit eating LOL! you can't quit eating, but you can change the way you eat...where you eat, how you sit, what you surround yourself with while eating, etc. So try that. Try even little things....such as which seat you sit in to eat. If you can, try changing the furniture lay out (IF you can).....that might be a small trigger there. btw....your comment earlier about that you don't think you can do it without a patch or whatever, YOU ARE WRONG!!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! Do NOT let satan feed you that lie!!!! Surround yourself with things that trigger other things that you WANT in your life...place scripture about victory all around you...in notes taped to walls and cabinet doors...on the bathroom mirror....even tape it to your cigarette package if you have to. There is power in the Word of God...use that power that God has given you to the best of your ability!!!!
