Throw that pack of smokes away Diane. Get rid of all of your ashtrays too. Clean the car out. Clean the house out. When we quit, we don't smoke. Buying a pack is not an option.

I was able to quit smoking on April 26, 2006, praise GOD (with two cigarettes one ugly night in July...thank goodness for repentence and forgiveness).

I have to tell you all that I "quit smoking" every day of my life from about 17 years old up until that day. I led a total double life for YEARs in church, in community, in work, in everything. I went through Celebrate Recovery (a Bible-help rather than self help program which uses the 12 step model with scripture) to quit and it still took me a year after that. I only quit the night after my first night as a leader in Celebrate Recovery. This has been an incredible resource for me to find victory over this hurt, habit, and hang-up. I would love to talk with anyone who has had or is having this struggle.

I would also like to say as much as it is appreciated and respected for the support from non-smokers, it was only other smokers (former) who could really understand the double life and years of shame I carried.

Extra help?

I have printed out business card size scripture text and references that deal with spiritual warfare. what I have done is put them in a business card wallet and carry them every where. Then when I feel I need a cigarette, I pull the card wallet out and start reading them to myself or out loud (even better). It doesn't take long for the urge to subside and be replaced with renewed determinination. You may like to try this...it helps me.

I am happy to share my file with the verses already typed and formated for blank business cards...I just can't see how to attach it. It may not be an option for me, since I am new to the site, but if anyone is interested, perhaps you can suggest how to make it availabe to others.

I'm listening in as well.

Been a smoker for about three years now. Picked it up late in life.

I started a thread on quitting smoking in the Health & Fitness section of the forum a while back. There are more smokers posting here than one may realize.

I will quit one day.

So how is everyone doing now that the holidays are coming to a close? Anyone making this a new year's resolution?

One piece of advice that seems to make sense on paper is that we must find a way to "forget to smoke". Anyone want to share how this can be done?

ahh good question. I have a friend who started twiddling a pencil in her fingers so that her fingers would not feel bare and she would "forget" and it worked for her.

I sure hope everyone had a great holiday and is able to come back here with good stories of that one that they put down!!! and if not, there's always the next one you pick up that you can choose to put down!!! It's a fight one cigarette at a time.

Hi fellow Early Death Candidate I have been smoking for 30 years, I am now 50, but I feel 20. Ok, this is not about age it's about not cheating ourselves of the full life that Jesus Chrst gave His life for. I am going to keep those of you who are struggling with these Cancer Sticks in prayer and I would also ask you to do the same for me. This coming year will be my first year making a resolution and it will be to QUIT SMOKING.
Why should we allow satan to knock out (early) those who can go out and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am on here every day, but I will give you my results on Tuesday Jan 2. You are in my prayers. God bless your future clean lungs and everything else for that matter.

If this is truly your reasons for giving up smoking, then why wait until January 1st? A couple extra days could make mounds of eternal difference.

Sorry to be so blunt, but methinks you're setting yourself up for a future plateload of guilt.

Here is another tip/tool if you don't mind looking and feeling a little silly....

buy some of those plastic cigarette filters -you know the kind that are designed to be used with cigarettes to cut down the tar. Stuff them with tissue paper or something that will block them off enough to create drag. Then when you absolutely must have a cigarette or you will jump out of your skin...'smoke' one of these. I mean really go through the motions that you would if you were having a real cigarette...pretend to light it, smoke it for a minute or two and then put it out!! After a couple of days you won't need to go through the ritual of smoking it...you might just handle it for a minute or stick it in your mouth like a toothpick. ...after some more time you can even just do the deep breathing without it. You may find it helpful in several ways:

- gives you something to touch and handle
- gives your mouth something to touch and handle and looks less ridiculous than a pacifier
- makes you do some deep breathing (simulating smoking) which calms the jitters
-psychologically gives you that same 'treat'..or reward time for accomplishment. Many of us use cigs as a reward between tasks.

It may look dumb, but you are still not smoking and most people understand that whatever it takes to get you over the hump is a good thing.

find new rewards
replace 'habit' behaviors
change your routine to avoid trigger moments
find pacifiers...pencils, filters, your thumb...anything ;- )

Okay what about accountability?
I think it would be helpful for us to agree to some form of reckoning.....say...confession time on a regular basis. This is not to guilt anyone, but to let yourself know that there is an accounting and there are people who are on your side and hoping and praying for your success.

Here are some ideas for covenant points:

  • can we all agree to be smoke free as of Midnight Dec. 31,2006?
  • covenant to pray for the group everyday for the first week
  • covenant to check in every day for the first week and report struggles and successes.

Any other ideas we can do to partner with one another and help us all pull in the same direction?

We CAN do this! Each and every one of us - because we are covenant people...we are not left to our own strength!

I work a day job and I get through about 3PM EST and with the strength from our LORD and your prayers I will begin to be smoke free. Yes! I am in and agree to be smoke free December 31 and forward.

My problem is I'm leaving work in an hour and my internet at home is on the fritz so I can't check in until Tues. I will be praying for everyone here, though.

I once smoked about a pack a day for about 5 years and quit cold turkey. Then, after more than a year of being clean, I caved and found myself once again hooked.

Now I'm 218 days off tobacco and 121 days nicotine free after about 30 years of use. (I did nicotine gum for 97 days.)

I've learned that 1) I am a nicotine addict and 2) I can never "just have one" ever again. I also have learned that I cannot quit forever, a year, or for a week. I can only quit one day at a time. (In the first 5 days without nicotine, I literally quit one hour at a time.)

I will never "be cured" and I will always be one cave away from slavery again.

Thanks for your story. I think I am very much like you. I had quit for 5 years once, but always craved it, dreamed of it...and eventually thought I could dabble in it just a little bit when things got really stressful. "I needed it" I told myself.

I won't be so foolish the second time around. When things get really stressful, the last thing I need is ANOTHER issue to deal with. hahaha. I amaze myself at my own blatant stupidity sometimes. Oh, well....three days free and counting!!

I hope every one is getting ready for success....two more days and we are walking out of this land of slavery!! And we are all walking out together!!! [8D]

Another thing that I learned this time is that nicotine-replacement is not a cure. At best, it can help you distance yourself mentally from tobacco. But you must understand that at some point you have to quit the gum/patch/candy and go through full withdrawal.

At worst, you will never satisfy your craving with the nicotine-replacement. It's a little like trying to get used to cold water an inch at a time. If you want to get past the physical craving, you have to "just jump in" by going cold turkey at some point.

There's about 72 hours of physical withdrawal and a few more days of what I call "the mind fog" before it all becomes mental.

If you can remember that first week free of nicotine, you won't believe the lies your mind will try to tell you (that tobacco "fixes" anything).

Hey Smoke Enders Dream Team, Keeping you all in prayer. Well, we are coming up on Midnight December 31, 2006 and we are or are we getting ready to face a new year with a smoke free cheer? I'm sorry if I jumped the gun. but I have not had a smoke since 11:45 AM Friday moring. So far I still have some hair, but I have to give this to God because Satan is always trying to tempt us.
I just came across this article and I also think the Government has gone a little overboard.

New Year's Eve....
So far I think we have myckey, servehim07 and zingo the only ones officially joining the effort. Let us know if others of you are on board....risking failure is part of the sacrifice!

here are a few checklist items to make sure you are ready!

  • have you thrown away your extra cigarettes?
  • discarded your ashtrays and lighters/matches?
  • emptied the trash in all garbage cans? (you don't want that stale smell hanging about)
  • searched thru every purse, bag, coat pocket, etc. looking for forgotten smokes?
  • stocked up on gum, sugarless candy, toothpicks, etc?
  • offered up your sincere desire to the Lord and asked for his help?

One more thing....take a few minutes to remember who you are in Christ...

You are covenant people...your freedom has already been secured and guaranteed. All you have to do is get up - take up your mat and walk! The name of Jesus is more powerful than any name - able to cast out demons, heal the sick and break every stronghold - and you are called by this name. You have been adopted into this name by the blood of Jesus which covers you from the top of your head to the souls of your feet. This blood of the new covenant which is for the forgiveness of your sins. You have a testimony of redemption, of rescue and of salvation into life abundant. You know your redeemer - and He knows you. You love your God and He loves you. Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. I beseech you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul.; Do not live the rest of your earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
