Yes He did it often with The Masters V. Alittle less with the last Stamps Group. Of course he was getting older and his health was going down hill.

I saw J.D. Sumner and the Stamps a couple of times in the early to mid-nineties, and I don't know what note(s) he hit, but it seemed like the whole building shook when he sang! He was awesome!

I'll bet he was even more amazing when he was younger. I was in awe of his talent the times that I had the privilege of hearing him.

Yes, he was even more amazing...but not in hitting the low notes. The tendency to make concerts a showcase for seeing how low he could slide only came during and after his Elvis years. During his years with the Blackwood Brothers, he did more actual singing. During that time, he didn't go beyond the F or G below low C. (He didn't hit the double low C back then.) But his singing back then was exceptionally good.

He could go high back then, too--he hit the tenor's high G at the end of one song ("What a Morning" on the Blackwood Brothers' "In Concert" record, I believe.)

JD lead the singing at the Worship services in the early years I am told by those older than me. A lot of Bass singing can sing tenor. I can sing most alto notes in the hymn book. Blessed Assurance was recorded prior to the Elvis era. JD said someone kept bugging him to record the Double Low C for the record book and to shut this individual JD did it. JD recorded Lonesome Road with the Blackwood Brother about 1963. I have That Album but he does not go to the Double Low C. I have listen to it for awhile. Of the top of my head I would say the low note would be a G or F on that recording.

I do agree that JDs ultra Lowness was not put as much until the Elvis years even though he had been annointed worlds lowest bass singer a number of years earlier.

Some of the old Masters V videos have it I believe. Jd does the Double Low C on "Theres a Light" and "Sho Do Him Now" on several videoes.

Check out http://www.jdsumnerandthestampsquartet.com/ It is a site run by Jd's daughters. It has a lot of Stamps and Masters V stuff as well as some Blackwood Brothers recording available for purchase.

I saw that today. The last time I talked to Shirley(JD's daughter) she told me told something new would be coming out soon. I guess this was what she was talking about. I will just have to call her and get me one of those little jewels.

I don't believe he goes below the double low C. Sometimes he would go down to low F, sometimes to double low C. But I don't believe he went any lower than that note in a live concert setting.

Check out the the Stamps site I previously mentioned in this thread. There is several songs that Jd Goes Low. I have video that was shot during that time frome where Hovie makes a point of point out that the not JD hits is a Double Low C. JD would have been 55-60 years old at the time. Also I asked the man who provided sound equipment for the Master's V and JD & the Stamps about this. The answer was yes. The older he got, he did it with less fequency. Into his seventies the note was not there every night as solid as JD wanted it to be thus on those nights he would not do any double lowc's in concert. On those nights F or Eb may have been the low note which is still low enough to vibrate the seats the audience was sitting in.

I know he hit the double low C. But I don't think he often went below that note in concert.

Well I do Know that when he made it in the Guiness Book Of World Records was for hitting the double low C, but I don't think he ever went lower then that.

He may have been able to go lower in practice; in fact, I believe I once read of him hitting a B (one half-step below C). But my original point was that it was not his general practice to do so in concert.

I've never understood this and I'm a piano player that's pretty familiar with the keyboard.

A "double low" C is not the C closest to the bottom of the keyboard. Count 'em. The middle C can be hit by any lead/baritone. Even I can hit the next 'C' down the keyboard and I'm not a singer. (In fact, my low note is the F below this low 'C'.) And there are tons of bass singers who can hit the next 'C' down the keyboard from that.....which is the second C below middle C.....in other words, the "double low C".

So, I assume that when people ask about JD's "double low C"....they're referring to the lowest 'C' on the keyboard....which is a triple low 'C'.

Sure; I understand your point. But I personally just use that because it's the common nomenclature in Southern Gospel.

Daniel, I figure that's the reasoning....but the question is whether or not it's accurate. If someone is describing the bottom-most 'C' on a piano keyboard, then it's just not accurate to say it's a "double-low C". At least not, if they're counting downward from the middle 'C'.

You are right; it is an inaccurate term, even if it is the term in common usage. But then, in Southern Gospel, tenors sing alto, baritones sing tenor, and leads sing soprano, and I've just tended to adapt to common usage rather than make a fuss.
