Well, folks, I guarantee that if Kirk is my waiter when I finally make it to Tony's place, I'm gonna leave him a very nice tip!!! Actually, I really am a good tipper. I have a lot of admiration for folks that can keep an order straight and deal with what they have to deal with from a lot of people --- I would be a very bad waitress!

ORIGINAL: robertyork The above several posts are TRUE, TRUE, TRUE. Christians or so called Christians are very cheap when it comes to tipping. They are CHEAP when it comes to a love offering for a gospel group. They are cheap when it comes to buying tickets for a gospel group. But, when it comes to ordering off the menu and buying the meal thats a lot different. If they want to go to a country music show that is different. If you can't afford to leave a decent tip then you can't afford to eat a steak. We's about to have church up in here! But I have to ask the question that usually gets me in the path of some VERY interesting looks. Why are Christians so cheap? I've addressed this before, but it needs to be said again. Because Christians have bought into the lie that their money is theirs. I did a search on Crosswalk and found 5 results in the KJV that said the earth is the Lord's. The two most noteable are Psalm 24:1 and 1 Corinthians 10:26 which quotes it. Why is it so important to note that the earth is the Lord's? Because that means that everything in the earth is His. That includes "my" money. That also includes me. And the smartest thing a Christian can do is realize that and allow Him to use "their" money to bless others since He owns it all anyway... Oops... I was on a rant there... Let me turn that off... [/rant] Thanks

A tract in place of a tip - NOPE!!! That is insulting. I have given and seen given some tracts with really good tips and on one occasion the next time we were in the waitress came over to ask some questions about the tract. I try to tip well and for great service I tip VERY WELL! If my drink stays filled you are definitely getting a big tip. One thing I saw when I was in food service is that often the older you are the less the tips were. Now part of that I'm sure is due to a fixed income. But not always. Another than many waitresses will tell you is often women are the worse tippers - that's a shame!!! If anyone should understand the work they are doing we should!!! And a group of Church women - most of the wait staff will hide!!!!!

I've heard some people say they don't know how much to tip.... in TN, its easy. Just double whatever the tax is and you are around 19%.

A decent place to start with a tip amount is 20% of the bill. It is not that hard to calculate. A 25.00 bill would be $5.00. If the service is really good it would not hurt to go higher. The last time I was at Tony's I tipped Kirk about 30% and then added a little extra because I say the people across from us left like a $2.00 tip. People need to understand the wait staff at restaurants are basically working for tips because the wages are minimal. They are paid well below minimum wage. Tips ARE their living. But trying to get money out of Christians is about as easy as taking a pork chop from a pit bull.

When I calculate tips, I just start with 10% and double that. If my meal was $18, then a 20% tip would be $3.60. I probably could just calculate it beginning with 20%, but for whatever reason, it's easier for me to double 10%. Go figure. LOL edited: crossposting with Sam - LOL Bobby, I very much agree about not ordering an item if you also don't have the money to include a proper tip. A waitress told me recently that most restaurants make the wait staff pay a percentage of the tickets (NOT the tips; the ticket itself) to other employees (i.e., host staff, bartenders, cooks, etc.) She was telling me this during the week of the most recent car show here, and we got on that topic because she was telling me how she dreaded working that week because of the reputation that the car show people have in being rude in restaurants and often times leaving not a little tip but no tip at all. She said that she often loose money during car show weeks because she still has to pay a percentage of her tickets to the various other employees and that if she didn't get that money in tips, then she has to pay it out of her wages. She was telling me this while she was at her other job, so it wasn't as if she had an ulterior reason for telling me (i.e., she wasn't milking me for a bigger tip; we weren't even at a restaurant during this conversation). I was just aghast as what I was hearing. She's also a Christian and she told me that, in general, she couldn't stand waiting on Christians - for the very same reason as the car show people. James, I agree with you too . . . Nothing, absolutely nothing I have is mine in the first place; it's all Our Lord's. If he tells me to do something with any I may have, then then I should do it. We are called to be charitable to people and obedient to Him. If a person is that hung up about what they have (in the case of tipping, money being possession) then they lost sight of where it came from in the first place AND are also showing a lack of faith and trust in Our Lord to take care of them.

They lived through the depression and it's aftermath and it is ingrained in them to be frugal. 2. They assume that the restaurant is paying the servers a fair wage and it is not the responsibility of the customer to "pay" the employees. Somewhere along the way it has developed that it is the responsibility of the customer to pay the restaurant employee's wages and a lot of older (and some younger) folks who aren't up on the latest trends are just unaware (or don't understand) this. I have many family members (ages 73-85) who fall into this category. They think it is foolish to leave more than one or two dollars. They simply cannot grasp the concept of "the restaurant does not pay the servers, you are supposed to". They think of the tip as a bonus for especially good service. I always leave an extra large tip when I eat out with these dear folks. There is also the situation of widows who have to watch their pennies and those on fixed income. These folks like to eat out too. All of this tends to create a "perfect storm" for servers when a Southern Gospel concert crowd comes in.

Yes, very good points, indeed. And I imagine that they also treat people with respect and dignity as well. I love the generations before me . . . when I'm out and about, they're the ones that will typically look me in the eye and smile (regardless of geography; I've found this to be true in every state I've lived in). Older people are so incredibly precious (and I don't at all mean that in a condescending way).

I saw Tony yesterday. He and Keith were coming out of church as we were going in. MsJudy, I gave Tony the hug and message you sent. Well almost all of it. I had forgotten to ask Mrs. C. to do it. He knew who the message was from and Tony said you had stopped by the restaurant on your way to Nashville. Just sneak in and out of town without telling anyone.

I think a point to bring up here is WHY do servers only get paid what they do? Why don't restaurant owners pay their workers the appropriate wages? After all, minimum wage is over $6.00/hr (which is still nothing, but its more than most servers make). I find it hard to believe that if I'm paying $30.00 for a steak that costs about $3.00 that a restaurant isn't making money.
