I was born in CA, raised in Iowa, moved around a bit when I married, and now we have been in Plano, TX for 20 years. I work in Dallas, 2 blocks from the Galleria. I go out for walks at noon and use a zig-zag path as I look for the shade trees. Plan to retire in a few years to Bullard, TX (outside of Tyler.) We love east TX for the natural beauty; can't say that DFW has much in the way of natural beauty.

Howdy, I've enjoyed reading posts from my fellow Texans. I was born in Denton and lived most my life in small towns northwest of there. I'm currently in "Deep East Texas" at Stephen F. Austin. After here, who knows...but it'll be somewhere, TX...My daddy didn't raise no fool...I'm Texas born, bred, and proud!

Good to meet ya'll.

April

PS- has anyone ever figured out how to type "your all's [insert noun]" Texas style?...ya'll's looks SO wrong...but it sounds ok.

Welcome to the newcomers!!

I've enjoyed this thread too since I don't live in Texas anymore.

If I still lived there, I might not be as appreciative.

Gotta say it again, I nearly died from the heat when I was visiting. I was so ready to come back to the cool weather, but when we got up here, it was 105! LOL!

April,

I usually spell it y'all for you all. That looks right to me, but hey, I don't think it's really an official word -- whatever that means . So you can spell it how you want.

april, my fellow alum, GO JACKS!!!

y'all is the conjuction for "you all."

when you make a conjuction, you put the apostrophe in the space where you drop letters. YOU ALL becomes Y--ALL becomes Y'ALL.

to make y'all a posissive, you place an apostrophe s on the end Y'ALL'S.

technically, y'all and y'all's are both regional slang or dialect, but the above is how you would punctuate it according to the normal rules.

(knowing the "proper" punctuation for "y'all's" is what you get when a you major in english in deep east texas, lol)

Texan by choice the last (nearly) 3 years. But by birth I am a West Virgnian by the Grace of God

Live in Dallas metroplex now and I do not want to live anywhere else that I can think of. I have lived in near Charleston WV, near Washington DC, near Baltimore MD, Melbourne FL, and Orlando FL. But Texas is hands down the tops right now in my not so humble Texas (and WV hillbilly) opinion.

For those who are not in TX anymore and need a little wildflower fix - here you go! Sorry if you've already checked my pics and seen it. It's one of my favorite photos this year.

I'll take the heat anyday. I'm over here in England where it's grey and rainy. It's the end of July and I'm wearing long-sleeved shirts! When DH and I went back to Texas for vacation recently, I had to buy some short-sleeved ones. I miss the sunshine and warmth.

Thank you, Becky! I don't get to see big fields of flowers like that up here, and I haven't been to Texas in the spring in 8 years, so I enjoyed seeing that.

Hey, I noticed some people were born in Odessa and Big Spring. I used to live in Midland, and drive through Big Spring every time we go back to see my parents. Also I know where Monahans, Hobbs, and Lovington are.

I was born in Houston, lived in the midwest for 7 years, then moved around Texas some more. Now we're in Wichita Falls, where I haven't seen any rattlers, scorpions, or tarantulas. We HAVE seen baseball size hail and my husband saw a funnel cloud once, from his office window. But I LIKE the weather here. Hardly any dust storms! More rain! Sky that's blue instead of beige! Our West Texan friends talk as if we're in the dead center of Tornado Alley. Not true! There hasn't been a tornado in Wichita County in, oh, a month now.

My sister lives in Lufkin! I'm hoping to spend Thanksgiving there.

They have a cool place called the icebox or the lunchbox where you can get awsome chocolate creme pies. They always get two when we come to visit so we can take one home with us.

The Lunchbox. They make really good mufaletta sandwiches, too. They used to be about three blocks from me but they've moved to a larger building.

Oh I love the facts about Texas!! They made me smile!

I am proud of my state! I was born at Herman Hospital, in Houston! I lived around the outskirts of Houston for 14 years! We then moved to a town that is about 45 minutes south of San Antonio, called Pleasanton. My mother's side of the family lives in Pearsall! I have now been living in Arizona for 6 years, and can not wait to get back to Texas! People are so much friendlier! You can wave at strangers and they wave back! I love Texas!

I miss that too!

I was born at Methodist Hospital in Dallas. Yes, I was born in Oak Cliff and I'll admit it. LOL!! I lived in Oak Cliff until I was 14 and then we moved to Duncanville. When we moved there, it was nothing. I mean there was almost nothing there, and there was even less in Cedar Hill. I went through Cedar Hill a couple of weeks ago, and I could not believe it. Wow!

Even though that's where I grew up, I spent most of my adulthood in Arlington until we moved to Colorado 7 years ago. Arlington has changed as well, but it's not quite so dramatic as some other areas.

I went to my in-laws house near the Bedford/Colleyville line and then went out to Southlake where I worked for several years, and I couldn't believe it. I got turned around because so many landmarks have been moved or are gone.

Is MiTierra's still any good? What about Tip Top Cafe? Is King Wah still there? I loved that place. My mother lived in SA for 3 years, and I ate at quite a few great restaurants. There are lots of good places to eat in that town.

MiTierra's - yep still there
Funny story, when my oldest was 7 I took her there and she wanted the mariachis to sing "uno elephante" (a song she learned in school) for her......they didn't know it - so they sang "La Bamba"......she wasn't impressed. She thought they should know "uno elephante" especially since she was willing to sing it for them.

Tip Top Cafe - yep - one of my favorite places.....with the elderly lady waitresses and the huge stack of onion rings and the chicken fried steak.....yummmmmmmm. I think it's time to meet my sister there for lunch soon.

King Wah....I'm not sure. Our favorite chinese place has always been Hung Fung on Broadway - I think it's been there since the thirties.
