Maybe we'll try a Moby wrap!! I wonder if using it on a 25+ pound "baby" would stretch so that it can't be used with a newborn though?
We have the Playtex Hip Hammock - I like it, but it seems to kind of "sag" - I'm always pushing it up on my hip if that makes sense. It's just not quite right on me for some reason. I used it more when DD was under a year and it was a lot better for my back than the bjorn type. I'm interested in trying the wrap though - it seems like it would be more "custom fit."

You retie the Moby every time you wear it and it says on the instructions that it may lose some of its stretch when you wash it but it will come back with use.

mine stretches out as I use it, even with little baby...but when you wash it it firms back up nicely.
btw...i didn't retie it every time...i would take it off in three rings and hang it like that on the back of the seat so that it stayed like that. Then when I would put it back on I would put them all back over my head and down to my waste then pull up one ring of it over each arm. When it seemed to be getting too twisted then I would retie it.

LOL...ok, when I tie it on I do it different too, that makes it easier to know which strap goes where. I drape one side over my left shoulder down to my knee...crisscross my back, around my waist, back crisscross around my back and over right shoulder (usually that step I do pretty quickly, just whip it around). Then tuck in under part that is around waist and go left around waist one more time, ending around the right front of the hip area where I tie the first end. To take it off in rings I do this...on right side stick hand under straps at waist and work it up to shoulder, take two rings off shoulder, then third falls into place from other shoulder. Hang in three rings just as I took it off. Then when I put it back on I put them all three down to my waist, align the knot where it should be, locate the other two straps and pull them up on my arms. It's pretty simple...for me at least.
I have nursed a bigger baby in it...Jack...he is now 7 months old. When I nurse in it I have to reposition him...I take him out of the right side, reposition his legs so that they straddle only the right side strap (or left, whichever is opposite of the side you will feed on...I always feed on the left when out). This allows his bottom to sit down more into the left side. Then use the waist strap to hold him in. I still have to use a blanket for coverage, but the moby holds all the weight instead of my arms or back and I can walk around a store like this too.

ok...well, I got my material to make the meitai's. Paul decided that it might be good to make two for us since Emma still wants to be held often.
Donna...I wasn't sure what kind of material you wanted, so I didn't buy that yet...I wanted to find out if you would like what we got to make Jack's with...I have enough of that to do both ours and yours out of the amount I had to buy for mine. I found this silky blue material...I got canvas to line it with so that it is strong enough and a coordinating cotton fabric for the straps (I wasn't sure the silk was strong enough for the straps). It's kind of blue/teal color and asian looking. HERE is a picture of it...HERE it is with the coordinating strap material....not sure the picture does it justice though. The one I will make for Emma is pink asian style material with a coordinating fabric of flowers for the straps...picture HERE

I have to say again how much I love my mei tai. I just strapped Helen on for a walk today. It was so nice...she liked her view and I liked having her close to me. I really don't like using the stroller...I don't like that I can't see her when she's in it, I don't really like pushing it (we live in a VERY hilly area and the stroller is just more difficult than it is worth). The mei tai took away all of that. I'm just so happy with it.

awwww.....poor baby!!!!! At least you can hold him close and not kill yourself, huh.
Still haven't started the mei tai yet...I will go over the pattern with my mom tomorrow cause I am going to tweak it a little...I can't do anything by the pattern...lol.

Okay, I have a question...do they bunch up in a ball, do they position themselves...does it matter if they ball up....it just looks like I would worry about there face and head being covered....
Oh, I want a baby to try these on now....

You do have to position babies safely in the sling as some positions can impair their breathing. Their chin should not be tucked under. Here's a great article on slings and safety.

jack tends to lean to one side or the other when he is in the moby and facing my chest. He likes to snuggle down though. He usually positions his head to where he can breathe out the side arm hole.

well...today I have started making the mei tai's. So far I have the front cut out...cutting the straps right now. Hubby was amazed how long the straps have to be to go around you...he forgot that they have to go around several times...lol.
I found a really cool site though that I wanted to share...it has great pictures of tying off the mei tai type carriers and even pictures men doing it...I love seeing men in pictures wearing babies too!!!! Mine loves to wear our babies (a recent convert to the more homemade styles...but he has always liked the hiking back pack type). Anyway...HERE it is

i didn't look at the price...YIKES is right!!!! Mine will cost me a total of about $10 for materials (and that is not skimping on the cheaper thread) when you break it down into how much material I will actually use for each. I like the price of the Moby much better...got mine (and Donna's) for $35 each.

We ventured into a new hold last night...the hug hold. We've been using the newborn hug hold, but last night, he wanted his legs straight. LOL I like the hug hold even better! We've also done the cradle hold, but he seems to spit up a lot that way.
