I will have to look up that Fish book too...my hubby lived up there for years and loves that fish market...I am sure he would love to read that about it.

If you are simply making a day trip to the beach, just gather the samples in some bottles and being them back home to study. We had access to a beach house, so we used the scope on the patio. Be sure to grab the goopiest seaweed you can find. It's MARVELOUS for being the home of some amazing creatures. Picking up different types of seaweed and grasses will often get you different sets of creatures.

But, DON'T actually take it into the water. That would NOT be a good idea and he actually didn't mean to imply that. Get those fish scales from fish that are OUT of the water.

Concave slides are the best type to use. They have a depression that holds the water in place.

Hi Meeks,

Glad you like the site. I have about 5000 more that I use for my classes. Each year I offer my kids bonus points for turning in a web site over some topic in each Module. I get tons of sites that kids find interesting to use in my classes. It is all about making it interesting to the students, is it not? Letting them pick the sites I use during class is just one way to get students to buy in to the materials being presented. Having them do PowerPoint presentations of their field studies is another.

I wish I could be there all the time for everyone, but with my gifting it is not so easy. I am prophet motivated and, according to Gary Smalley, I am a lion-beaver personality type: argumentative, too dictatorial, unrealistic expectations of self & others, and too perfect. http://www.new-life.net/persnty.htm. It was this side of me that came out with Cynthia.

It is also why I am no longer pastoring or evangelizing. I am blunt and to the point and I tick people off. I am giving up my helpline duties at the end of this school year because of the incident with Cynthia. I don't want my abruptness to influence peoples' impression of a fine organization like Apologia Science. I am willing to take a cut in pay before I will hurt their profits. Jay Wile is an awesome guy, wonderful Christian man, and he deserves your business. I hope my rudeness does not change popular opinion of Wile's work.

Back to microscopes: The National Model 131 has one other advantage over some of the others -- parts are easy to get. If you scratch an objective at the beach, you can get the replacement part in about a day. Some of the other brands come from Europe and parts can be difficult to come by.

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't be too hasty about giving up the help role. At least wait until your read "FISH!".

I don't care WHAT your basic personality type might be, you don't have to be a slave to it. Nor do you have to expect your future to be determined by your past. Being a bit rude yesterday doesn't ensure that you will be rude tomorrow.

If so, we all would be in a world of hurt!!!

Based on what you wrote when you came up here, I'd say that rudeness is NOT your core personality trait. Humility and the willingness to admit a mistake and change are the personality traits that I see in you. Plus, you sound like a VERY fun guy to be around.

Read the book. Try to see where you can apply the principles to all areas of your life and THEN decide if a pay cut is better than remaining on the help line. I don;t think that you will find that it is... as, I expect FISH! will reinvigorate you to try to 'BE THERE'.

ok cool....thanks. we aren't near any beaches right now (in OK) but my mom lives in the TX/LA/Gulf area and we can go to the beach there...when we get a microscope.
btw...I knew you weren't meaning literally IN the water, but I doubt I would still trust taking it to the beach

Rosenon, I agree with Meeks. I wasn't suggesting or even thinking that you should quit. Customer service is something that can be learned. If you find out you are lacking in an area, most customer service skills are easy to learn. I worked retail for several years and learned a lot about customer service. However, it sounds like you have a lot of other things going on and are maybe overloaded. Otoh, from you seem to be the kind of person who likes to be very busy and involved in a ton of things.

Dear Meeks & Cynthia,

Thanks for your posts. I turned in my resignation to Dr. Wile today. No one asked me to do this or even suggested it, Cynthia. I do not want the responsibility of determining someone's financial future by what I say. Your outcry has been read by numerous people, including Dr. Wile -- and it has hurt his business. Customer service is not my strength, teaching is. If what I write in an e-mail when I am trying to help someone is going to cause this much stir, rob me of my sleep, and make people, including my boss, think less of me -- then the part time monies gained are not worth the effort. I can just teach one more class. FISH or no fish, it is what I think best for this situation. I need to leave customer service to the professionals.

Now this is a forum about microscopes. I think we should change the topic off me and get it back on point. For those of you doing Module 2 of EC with Biology, here is a great page:

These are all scanning electron microscope pictures of bacteria ... enjoy!

Okay, Steve, enough said. No more discussion about the issue of the e-mails with Apologia.

Let's get back to microscopes and keep this thread on topic.

But, nobody here thinks less of you now. In fact, we think MORE of you.

You took a minor negative and made it a huge POSITIVE.

That is the essence of Christian living. I have tremendous respect for your courage and for Apologia in QUICKLY fixing a small vexation and coming back to MORE than redeeming the reputation of both you and Apologia.

Frankly, I was one most critical of the original reply. But, now, you, yourself, have made me one of your biggest fans. In your dissapointment in yourself it may be difficult to see that. But, believe me, in MY eyes at least, it has let me see the TRUE character of Apologia. Prior to this it was just another company. Now, I can see that it is NOT just another company. It's a company that cares.

While it may seem incongruous, your lapse became an opportunity to raise the esteem of Apologia in my mind. And, if in my mind... then I'm sure in others, too. Rejoice in that!

Satan focuses on our failures. Christ focuses on our overcoming and triumphing over those failures. We're all in Christ's camp up here when it come to you and Apologia.

That's the last word from me on the subject because it is past... LONG past. And, though a country separates us, I can see from your heart that you would be one Brother in Christ that it would be very easy for me to Love in Christ.

Back to Microscopes!

I would be so afraid of taking a microscope to the beach! I'd be afraid of breaking it. But... that sounds really cool. We often go to the beach in the summertime. There is so much to see.

I am not wanting to purchase the cheapest microscope, but I don't have a ton of money either. I'm thinking something under $300.

You are right, Meeks, about wanting to use this for much than just one class. I think the other children would benefit from having a microscope around.

One of my favorite scopes is the Dual View teaching scope that allows two people to view at one time. I'm sure you can find one for under $300. The benefits are:

1) You can see what your children are actually seeing, as apposed to what the THINK they are seeing.

2) A camera (digital or video) can be mounted on the top eyepiece tube for viewing on a PC or monitor.

3) The older kids can mentor the younger kids.

4) peers can discuss what they see.

I'll try to locate the least expensive dealer for you.

Meeks, I was wondering if you had an recommendation on a dealer. I feel like I'm in a sea of retailers and am looking forward to your recommendation.

The only thing I can do is to perform a search for price and comments about reliabilty, etc.

But, you will notice that many of the sites look the same. That's because they have reserved a large number of names; but, they all point to the same core company.

These scopes are almost all made in China and the margins are SO low that the dealers rarely do service. They exchange rather than fix. But, I'm sure that some are better than others or have more clout with the importer when it come time to replace a defective unit.

I haven't run across any defects so far that are show stoppers expect one batch of my favorite scopes that had the heads mounted backwards. They still worked; but, it was awkward. Fortunately, it was in a single day's factory run.

I'd be glad to help you hunt when you have a more solid idea of what you want.

That is exciting!

I would suggest some concave slides to make it easier to look at home grown protozoa, algea and other pond or salt-water creatures. When you get it, it might be fun to start a thread on starting a culture and some interesting experiments with protozoa.

Did you know, for instance, that Paramecium line up with an electrical current?

I didn't know that. I am learning so much from hsing. I wanted to take more science in school, but I didn't want to dissect furry animals.

I am concerned that I won't know what I am looking at in a microscope. Is that hard to figure out?

We have all kinds of stuff to take samples from as we live in the country.

It certainly can be. Amoeboids are particularly hard to distinguish from debris when you first put the material onto a slide. That's because they tend to freeze in place with jostling. But, if you wait a bit they start to move around.

Ciliates (paramecium, etc.) aren't tough to recognize.

There is an excellent book called "How to Know the Protozoa" that would be a big help.

Prepared slides depend on the quality of the preparation. Most student slide sets come from China these days and can vary greatly from slide set to slide set.

If one can afford it, I really recommend a dual view microscope for student use. These microscopes have an extra vertical eyepiece tube that can be used for a camera or for the parent or teacher to view the slides concurrently with the student. One of the things that happens is that a teacher finds a specimen and in the transfer to the child the table is shaken and the specimen goes out of site. The ONLY way to avoid this to to be able to concurrently view the specimen.

The other option is to buy a video adaptor that fits in place of the single eyepiece so that you can view the specimens on a TV screen. Unfortunately, in spite of real advances in small hi-res video technology, I've not seen comparable advances in the quality of the lower cost versions.

Here is a link to a description of the MF-04 that is a dual view microscope. The dual view head can be replaced with a stereo head as the child's need for a more professional system changes, so you don't end up having to buy an entirely different scope... just the stereo head module.

Here is a link to a video adapter. It works. But, not as well as I would like to see. This model has been around for years and I hope that eventually they will upgrade it to something better. There are other options that do the same thing; but, this is the only one I've tested.

My husband and I are looking at microscopes this evening. What does (oil immersion N.A. 1.25) mean? I followed a link you posted back in November.
Here. It looks like this microscope with would for the Apologia Biology course, but I'm unsure of what oil immersion is about.

There is an even lower cost alternative and it's called the "Multi-Study Scope" by most companies. It's a monocular version of the low power scope. The problem is that it is 20 power and not 10 power... which cuts down on the depth of field (how much is in focus) and the size of the field (how much can be seen in the eyepiece). The company that I use when I donate scopes or buy my own, is coming out with a psuedo-stereo version of the Multi-Study Scope; but, it won;t be out until January.

I am also interested in purchasing another scope that would be good for the purposes you mentioned of looking at rocks, bugs, etc. Can you tell us the name of this scope and perhaps (pretty please) provide a link?

I tried to look up the C&E premier line of microscopes, but didn't come up with anything, except an electron microscope, which probably won't fit our budget.

We now have a really great microscope. If you're curious, click here.

I have hardly ever used a microscope and do not remember much about it.

What is oil emersion?

I have no idea how to prepare a slide to look at say the foam that is floating in Puget Sound or the mud on the beach or anything else for that matter. I have looked at some things and think I get how to put a slide together. I bought some slides that have a concave and some cover slips, but beyond that, I'm clueless.

Please help me! When the slides come, I want to go collect some goo and look at it.

That is actually not a bad markeup on that dual view scope. Especially since the price just went up from the manufacturer. (You bought it at the right time.) But, I still have trouble with a web site touting a 'List Price' when I know that the manufacturer never set one.

As you reach higher powers in a microscope you begin to be able to see features that are smaller than can be transmitted though air without distortion. It's a bit like a mirage.

By using some special oil this problem is removed because you have a continuous flow of light from glass to glass (slide to lens). It fuses the slide and lens as if they were one light-sending body, with no gap of air.

You really don't have to wait to find goo from a lake. Any of your houseplants or the plants in your yard have TONS of little protozoa waiting to be discovered. The quickest way to get them going in preparation for your concave slides to arrive is to pull up some grass by the roots and put them into some water in a plain old jar. Then take a single drop pf milk (Yes, it WILL stink) to start the bacteria growing. The protozoa and other creatures will eat the bacteria.

Use an eye-dropper to probe at the top edge of the water where it makes a ring around the glass. Or, simply wipe the eyedropper along a blade of grass. You should be able to see scores of creatures after a few days.

Do NOT use the highest magnification with the concave slide, since you really need a cover slide for the 1000X to work correctly. If you try to use it without a cover slide you will end up dipping it in water and need to clean the lens. You can, however, put a drop of water on a flat slide, add a cover slide and then use the 1000X lens.

The milk idea is the quickest way to get a culture ripping along. But, it's short-lived. Boiling some rice to soften it and dopping some grains in the water will provide a longer term food source for the bacteria. There can also oxygen issues. So, stir the water from time to time briskly for a second or two.

Do this, and I'll guarantee you that you will think twice about picking up a blade of grass and putting it in your mouth again!

Some of the more interesting protozoa can be found by picking up some moist dirt around the roots of household plants. Check out "How to Know the Protozoa" from the library.

I'm glad you picked up the microscope before the price went up. I found it on another web-site and it was over $400!

My slides and covers all came, so I'll go ahead and try what you have told me about. That sounds interesting. I am still working on not being nervous about using it, but it won't be of any service to us if I don't get past my fear of breaking the thing.

It's pretty hard to break a scope, short of dropping it. If I remember correctly that scope has a stop and spring loaded objectives so it's hard to actually break the lenses. But, just in case, always look from the side to go down to the slide when using oil and then bring the head back UP to focus. The only danger would be with the 100X objective (1000X). I don't even think the others can go down that low. But, it's been a while since I used mine.

So... GET OUT THERE AND GET STARTED!!!!! Have some FUN!!!!

Okay. Maybe we'll start growing something tomorrow. I've also got to get to the beach.

It only takes a day or two to see some results. And, if you want instant results, just put a drop of water in a concave slide and probe with an eyedropper around the moist roots of a house plant and drop it in the water on the slide. You can generally find something of interest swimming around.

At the beach, look for algae and run an eyedropper over the surface and drop the results on a slide. There is a lot of life hanging onto floating algae.

We are surrounded by tiny lifeforms.

I am wondering how to focus at higher powers. I cannot see a thing at 40x10 and am wondering what I'm doing wrong. I am also afraid of touching the lens to the slide and don't know how to tell if this is about to happen. How do I avoid this?
