I agree what a great shot.......

Well, I've been fully back into the biking again since early May, averaging over 200 miles per week. Last weekend, for the first time in quite a while, I put my mountain bike in the car and drove to some nice single track in the national forest. It was a wonderful, refreshing change from the road bike. If you've been neglecting the dirt, do yourself a favor and get out there once in a while.

I like riding a bike down a hill and going free-fall if you will. [:D]

I do not know too much about bike maintenance at all, so a flat tire could be a big disadvantage.

I do not like riding up hills, it really exercises both the leg and lower back muscles and could aggravate your back if it is weak.

When I ride, I tend to go for small treks and then reward myself at the destination that I have cycled to and then ride back afterwords.

You mean the dairy queen? thats where most of the neighborhood people ride their bikes to [:D]

humbleinspirit -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/21/2008 4:09:12 PM)

Yes Jill, something like that, ice cream usually seems to be my reward. Hmmm, maybe I will do that later too!

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/21/2008 6:39:04 PM)

Hi Humbleinspirit! My husband and I always laugh that we find ourselves biking for ice cream. But it is still better than driving for ice cream. Try to find an ice cream shop that is a challenge to get to. We are taking off in an hour or so on a ride. We were out this morning then we came home to rest up, walk the dog and escape the heat. mY hubby is going to help me find a safe route to my job so I can participate in bike to work day.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/21/2008 6:40:54 PM)

Hi 42servehymn, the only thing here is riding in traffic can be cumbersome. My area isn't a very bike friendly city per say at all.

stellaluna -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/21/2008 6:58:15 PM)

My city isn't bike friendly either. Between the roads and the oh-so-friendly natives ([8|]), it can be downright hairy 'round these parts. But I've been bike commuting so long now that I can't imagine giving it up.

As far as biking for rewards, I decided two years ago that I went to Starbucks too often. (It was a pants problem. [sm=aside.gif] Anyway, I decided never to have Starbucks unless I biked to get it--about four miles round trip. Eventually I lost interest in Starbucks. ha ha Now if I have to have it, I make it at home.

HOWEVER...These days my husband and I can be seen biking in the evenings to the nearest snow cone stand, also about a four-mile round trip. It's a nice activity on a hot summer evening. [:D]

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/22/2008 4:11:52 PM)

Went for a little longer ride on my new bike. I rode 2 miles to a friend's house but she and her hubby weren't home from church yet. Then, I rode up to one of the bike paths and followed that for a while. On my way back, I was flying along and saw some kind of ribbon or something fluttering in the breeze on the path. When I got up to it, I realized that it wasn't a ribbon but a whipsnake! Now, I know everyone is going to think I'm nuts, but I kinda like snakes so I swerved to avoid hitting the little fella and zipped around him.

My new bike is SOOOO much faster and more responsive than my mountain bike. I'm absolutely loving it. [:)]

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/22/2008 5:43:41 PM)

I have encountered a number of snakes on the bike path. They tend to lay on the path after sundown to warm themselves. I am unfamiliar with a whip snake but I can tell you from experience that garter and bull snakes can slither away after being run over. toads however are another story. Hubby and I went out biking last weekend and saw tons of smashed toads. EWWWW! I'm glad you are liking your new bike!

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/22/2008 5:48:18 PM)

Yuck! I can imagine toads would be rather... ummm... messy... [:'(]

Dred -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/23/2008 10:17:46 PM)

Well, I've seen quite a few nice rat snakes and king snakes on the trail so far this spring, but today saw my first poisonous snake of the year--just a copperhead.

Ed

We have rattlesnakes around here, but I haven't seen any on the paths and as much as I like snakes, I hope I don't see any on the paths around here... [8D]

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/24/2008 9:08:54 PM)

Tomorrow is bike to work day! Here in Denver it is a big deal. There will be stations set up around town with refreshments and things. I will be biking as I am sure many others will.

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 12:36:27 PM)

I had a great day biking to work yesterday. My job is a 6.5 mile ride and there are some wicked hills to get there. If you look a few pages back you will see that I HATE hills. I am working on it though. There are certainly enough hills here to practice on! I was pleased that I didn't do any walking on those hills. I even got back on the bike after getting home and biked 3 miles to meet hubby after work. On the way home from hubby's job it started to lightening a bit. Hubby is a little nervous about lightening since his close encounter last year. So we took cover under a bridge for a bit. Then I finally convinced him to brave it. We weren't home long when it really started pouring and the lightening was spectacular. It was a dramatic end to the day for sure.

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 3:07:27 PM)

I'm not a big fan of lightening - but glad your rides went well.

On my way to work this morning (driving - I need my car for my job [&o]), I was thinking about which route to take on my next bike ride. I ended up missing an exit I needed to take and was a few minutes late to work... [8D]

But I think I figured out my next ride... [:D][:D][:D]

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 6:41:37 PM)

I think that planning a bike trip and missing your exit is a forgivable sin but I guess it depends on if your boss likes to bike. We have a wonderful little book of all the bike trails in the Denver area. We have over 300 miles of trails of all levels of difficulties. That is how we plan our bike ventures. I think that at some point this Summer we will plan a 35-40 mile trek. That is more than we have done so far so it will be a challenge for us but I think we are up for it!

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 8:23:30 PM)

Fortunately my boss wasn't there today. He doesn't like to do much of anything... [8D]But he also wouldn't get mad because I'm never late. He joked at my last evaluation that if he didn't see me walking in the door by 30 seconds before I was supposed to be there, everyone started to worry... [:D]

42servehymn -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 8:52:55 PM)

I told my boss at my old job that if I was ever late I would probably be dead because I am rarely late. I decided to ride my bike to work on a day that I thought the roads would be passable but in fact they were not. It was early Spring after the brutal Winter blizzards of 2006 here in Denver. I was tired of waiting. My boss did indeed call me because I was late to work (my only time). I ended up being about 5 minutes late. Considering what I had gone through to get there that day 5 minutes was nothing.

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/26/2008 8:57:01 PM)

That's kinda like when I call in sick. It's so rare that my boss knows if I do, I am practically on my death bed... [:D][:D][:D]

For some reason I find this very funny...........

Providing we have good wx, we will! [:D] I'll probably get fried - even with sunscreen. LOL

phosadaud -> RE: Bicycling....adventures, experiences, favorite rides etc (6/27/2008 5:51:46 PM)

It's supposed to be boiling hot this weekend - in the 100s. If I don't get up early tomorrow, I think I'll wilt on my ride... [&:]
