Have you ever ridden highway 1 from north to south? I remember when I drove down we saw so many people on bike riding the highway.......I thought it would be so much fun...........then watching the tour this past week really showcased how beautiful the coast is........

At least we HAVE hills in California! Hey we have hills in Indiana........rolling hills........rounded at the bottom........if you are a skilled cyclist such as myself you can go fast enough down momentum will take you most the way back up.........now that is what I call fun..... Our state is a very dangerous place to ride though........do you know why?

We ride on Hwy 1 quite often, it is just a quick hop over the "hill" (3500' coastal range). Most of the time we ride between Santa Cruz and San Fransisco, but occasionally we will ride south, and our club does a multi day ride down the coast every year.

Wow Dred how many miles does it go? We don't have very many rails to trails yet in Indiana.....the few bike paths we have are only 10-20 miles. It's 95 miles long. Take a look: http://www.sethholladay.com/Silver-Comet-and-Chief-Ladiga-Trails-Map.php I live about a mile and a half from the trail in Jacksonville, Alabama. Happy trails, Ed

Does your son (is that who is in the picture?) ride with you on long trail rides?

The last time I tried taking him out in the bike trailer, we went over a bump and he apparently got scared. He was just about 12 months at the time and is 16 now, so I thought I might try again soon. I think one problem is that he ends up slumped down on his back, especially due to bumps, and didn't know how to get himself up straight again. I may want to try a pillow behind him or something, but on the last occasion, I just had to take him out and call his Mom to come pick him up.

I've thought about the bike seat; I opted for the trailer for a few reasons including the fact that it is a roll cage and would stay upright if I were to fall over. I can't recall falling over on the pavement, though. Mountain biking is another matter; I've experienced all sorts of elaborate falls doing that, but enjoyed every minute! Ed

We are thinking and have actually been looking on craigslist for a trailer for the dog to ride in. Has anyone ever taken their dog on a ride with them. He is a border collie/chow mix. He is a great rider in the car and just loves going places. I would love to be able to take him with us when we take off for a long Saturday ride

Hi Joy! Thanks for thinking of me. Yes I still have some fears when I ride but I am getting better each time I ride. One of the things that helped me was oddly enough my ipod. Whenever I used to ride I listened to my ipod (with one ear open at all times). I love the soundtrack from the movie Leap Of Faith. After my accident my bike and my ipod sat pretty much ignored. One day I saw my ipod sitting on the table and started listening to my favorite music. Apparently my brain is wired to associate that music with biking and I had the DESIRE to be on the bike at that exact moment. That was actually how I started moving forward literally and figuratively. I did take the winter off pretty much but since the warmer weather and now the time change I will be back out there. I also changed jobs so I couldn't ride to work anymore but I can still ride on my off time. Because the dog is so good in the car I imagine he will be good in a cart. I tried biking with him on the leash once and he did not behave. My husband and I decided that was way too dangerous for the dog and for us.

Has anyone been riding lately? We have had nicer temperatures and I am trying to get out and ride as much as I can. The other day I took my old route to work. My time was 7 minutes over what my best time was last year. So it looks as if I've got some work ahead of me. Last year I did other exercises with the idea of keeping in shape for biking. This year I did NOT! I am definitely paying for my slacking off. I am really having FUN riding again though. We have great temps predicted all week and I plan to take advantage.

ORIGINAL: joy2give2u I had the most wonderful ride last night.........though I will admit I did not think it was wonderful until after I got home........ After being warned it was cold out, I decided to take one of my shorter routes yet when I came to the fork in the road, right leading to a short route and left to a longer one, I turned left. Soon I was to wonder why...... Robert Frost answers your question well... I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Hi Seattle59........It is nice to see another rider join us. Once the weather turns nice hopefully this thread will become more active. Do you ride? I live in Indiana so ride mostly in the warmer months. I did get a short ride in a week ago.......when the temps got up to 40 and the sun was shining but it has since dropped and is raining sleeting again.......... When will spring actually be here ........??????

Hi joy2give2u... Years ago I used to ride but mostly in the gym. Usually about 150 miles per week. Then as I approached geezerdom I gave it up and ballooned up past 300 pounds. I was spending too much time teaching Special Education and sitting on my butt. Plus I thought that I had about had it with exercise. I was a mess with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and depression. Over the last few years I took the advice in the Bible that my body is a temple for the Lord. Then I came down with Stage 4 cancer. Thought I was a goner. Over 3,000 people in our church prayed for me everyday. Today I am a cancer survivor, no more diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or depression. I now am down to 185 pounds and getting ready for the rest of my life. After reading your posts I believe I will start riding again but not in the gym. Riding for pleasure in God's wonderland will be just the thing for me. I can hardly wait. One thing I wonder about. What kind of bike should I purchase for riding? Maybe someone has some advice. I will be riding the highways and country roads. I won't be in a hurry but want reliability...maybe some kind of road bike to ride around Washington and Oregon...maybe California. Speaking of Spring the trees are budding with some blooming even though it snowed in Seattle yesterday with more on the way. That's why I am sitting next to my wood stove with my seven dogs. A good way to spend the day today...

Wow Seattle59 what an amazing testimony.......... May I ask how you lost the weight? Did you follow a program or was it more of a spiritual journey then physical one? I ride a heavier bike with slightly wider tires then a road bike (not as wide as mountain though) since I mostly ride on country roads which are full of pot holes, cracks, loose rocks and other road hazards. The wider tires and heavier bike make me feel a little more steady then thinner tires. Though I am riding for exercise my main purpose is enjoyment so speed is not as high a priority as is comfort.

The famous run to Nome with the serum to stay off an epidemic......... They traveled, what usually took weeks for the mail, in five day.......through one of the worse recorded blizzards........to save the town.........the dogs were heroic. As for your seat fair maiden.......maybe you just need more natural padding like me LOL

joy2give2u... I think it was more of a spiritual journey. Have you ever gotten sick of yourself and decided to change...I mean really change. I have to admit that mostly it has been through prayer. Everytime I get hungry I ask our Blessed Lord to take away my hunger. I supplement with about 4 cans of Ensure a day...actually what I used is called Equate. It's available at Walmart. Each can is about 250 calories. Most people need at least 2,000 calories a day. Well, I am consuming about 1,000. We pretty much quit going to restaurants...maybe once every couple of months, absolutely no fast food whatsoever, no meat, but sometimes a can of soup...chicken noodle or fresh vegetables, no oil or butter or bread, an occasional bowl of ice cream, sometimes chocolate. I buy those big bars of chocolate but only eat one or two little squares a couple of times a week. Mainly I pray that every time I am hungry the Lord will help me to resist the temptation. I also read my Bible when I am hungry and that's a tremendous help. Once you get the hang of it and start losing pounds, the satisfaction of knowing you can do it helps also. Plus, I have had to keep pounding new holes in my belt so my pants won't fall off...heehee. Another satisfaction is that I only weigh myself about once a month...you can tell as the pounds are shed without a scale. Lots of exercise...not a regemented program...but working in the yard mowing and raking and such. We pretty much heat our house with wood so I spend a lot of time in the woodshed splitting wood, packing wood, and keeping the fire going. I get up at 4am to build a fire to heat the house and make sure that I am not getting lazy. I go to bed early...about 8:30 or 9:00pm, seldom taking a nap. I keep on the move simply doing things...not necessarily the kind of things that make you prespire but just trying to keep busy in mind and spirit. That's it...pure and simple...from 321 pounds to 185 pounds and still losing. Pretty soon they are going to start calling me Jared.
