Therein lies the problem. Are we to back down (on any given thing in any place in the world) because someone is going to be upset? Is that justification for violence? That is one of the main problems with society in America today. We change laws to take away liberties from the public to satisfy the few who are offended by any small thing. [>:]

But it didn't have to. But then it doesn't take much to spark a reaction from those who hate Jews, does it?

On the other hand Israel withheld any violence in reaction to the SCUDS Saddam lobbed at them even though they were not a belligerant in that conflict. All Hamas needs to provoke violence is a cartoon!

Stephanos -> RE: Israel Attack on Iran 'Unavoidable': Olmert Deputy (7/16/2008 3:32:33 PM)

Apparently, based on the reaction to the Sharon Temple visit, if a Jew even sneezes in the direction of the Temple mount, it is cause for a Islamic uproar and violence.

The infidel contaminated the holy mosque with his bacteria. "Death to Israel!" [sm=icon_smile_dead.gif]

But actually us members of Hamas are a peaceful bunch. We may look tough on the outside with our suicide vests and AK-47's but we're really a bunch of altruistic pussycats! Come on Israelis give us a hug! [sm=hug.gif] BOOM!!!

Um.... no.

Ariel Sharon visiting that place wasn't just "a Jew" sneezing. Sharon is not popular with the Palestinian Arabs thanks to his track record. If he didn't know he was going to be provoking them by merely showing up, he might not have needed the roughly, er, one... thousand bodybuards that accompanied him there.

Correct. It was a gamble he took, even if it would later cost lives on both sides.

Has a pope ever visited the temple mount? How bout Billy Graham?
Would a US president or one of the above elicit an infitada?

So if someone tells you that they will kill you if you do so and so, you will not. Nice. Live in fear and give them what they want. I am not impressed. This is like allowing the bully on the playground to continue.

Israel attack on Iran "unavoidable": Olmert deputy

"JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable" given the apparent failure of sanctions to deny Tehran technology with bomb-making potential, one of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's deputies said on Friday.

"If Iran continues with its program for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.

"Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable," said the former army chief who has also been defense minister.

It was the most explicit threat yet against Iran from a member of Olmert's government, which, like the Bush administration, has preferred to hint at force as a last resort should U.N. Security Council sanctions be deemed a dead end."

I can hear the price of oil creeping up as I read this. We might be tangled in another war before elections.

And Iran will of course be well within their rights to defend themselves from an attack.

WormHeart

Good luck to them... History is not on their side...

John

The last Iranian (Persian actually) leader who was considered a friend of Israel was Cyrus the Great! That was a long, long, time ago! I don't think Ahmadinejab will be issueing any "Edict of Restoration" anytime soon.

It's not about "infidels" visiting that location. I myself stood on that spot no more than a month before Ariel Sharon did.

The problem was with Ariel Sharon, the biggest obstacle to peace in Israel at the time.

mapachito13 -> RE: Israel Attack on Iran 'Unavoidable': Olmert Deputy (7/17/2008 8:02:38 AM)

Hamas, the PA, and the Israelis have all done things that ratchet up the tension in the area. This stems from one fundamental problem: Hamas' refusal to admit that Israel has a right to exist and the Israeli position that it does.

If Hamas wants to stop living in the toilet of Gaza and start building a state for their people they need to stop lobbing rockets and performing suicide missions in Israel. Once they stop the violence and get their extremists under control, then Israel will not have any pretext for cross border incursions or sanctions.

TheosCentric -> RE: Israel Attack on Iran 'Unavoidable': Olmert Deputy (7/17/2008 9:12:14 AM)

Hamas has stopped lobbing rockets and they have recognized Israel's right to exist.

But I guess you missed that memo.

Israel has to stop it's settlement and annexation programs too.

Really? I guess some of us here have missed the reality of news reports telling of the continuing attacks.

JERUSALEM, July 12 (Reuters) - A rocket fired from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip landed in southern Israel on Saturday, causing no injuries or damage, Israeli police said, in the latest attack since a truce was reached last month.

I am sure Israel did something to antagonize them. Perhaps, they made of line of civilians that were mooning the peaceful Hamas gentlemen, who were simply saying their evening prayers. [sm=aside.gif]

I guess some Hamas members didn't get that memo either.

They never do. It was Al Aqsa, Russian spies, or French revolutionaries.

No, YOU need to read again. I'll now quote the next three paragraphs from the article...
quote:

"A rocket landed in Israel, near Sderot," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, referring to the southern Israeli town that has been a frequent target of rockets from Gaza.

There have been several rocket attacks from the coastal territory since the Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas went into effect on June 19. Israel responded to previous attacks by reclosing border crossings with the enclave.

The truce calls on Gaza militant groups to halt rocket attacks in return for Israel gradually easing an embargo on the territory. The Jewish state tightened its cordon on Gaza after Hamas Islamists took control of the territory a year ago.

Even if it isn't a dues paying member of the Hamas organization who is launching the rockets, it IS a fact that Hamas isn't stopping the launches from IT'S territory.

"Gaza militant groups" is kind of an all encompassing statement! Hamas is in charge of the strip so they bear the responsibility.

Israel finds itself responsible and prosecutes settlers who murder or assault Palestinians, why can't Hamas do the same? It's not like they have to patrol a huge area 139 sq. miles (roughly twice the size of the District of Columbia).
