Hey Gerald! Just wanted to say again how grateful we are that you guys do requests. Not all groups are so good at doing our favorite songs. I will never forget a couple years ago when you were reading the pile of notes of requests. You got that funny look on your face and said that it must have been an old lady that wrote this one. Well, our row cracked up. My mother wrote it and I will never let her forget that Gerald thinks she is an old woman!!! Thanks for another great concert memory!!!
BTW, we were so disapointed you all didn't make it to upstate NY this year!

What song was it (if you remember)?

I remember that Thanksgiving concert in Greeneville. I brought Tracy Stuffle with me. It was the first time he ever saw the Cathedrals in concert. He was "hooked" that night, and hasn't gotten over it yet.

The answer to that question is "yes". The producer can decide what stays and what goes. Lari is a brilliant arranger... the best, in my opinion. On "Everyday People", we decided to "pull back" on the music just a bit, since our last couple of CDs had been so hugely orchestrated. I think we ended up with a really good recording. The songs are strong and the tracks compliment the lyrics very well. I don't know about the "funny steel thing" you mentioned at the end of one of the songs. Sonny Garrish did the steel overdubs, and we sat right next to him in the Control Room as he worked. He is amazing. He used to do the steel on most of the Cathedral's recordings, but it was always after the Master session, so I had never had the opportunity to meet him until this recording. He is a legend in Nashville, and he's still great!

Yes you were, it was at Tanglewood Baptist Church! My gosh, you know I guess I knew it at the time but I had forgotten you brought Tracy to the Thanksgiving concert, I remember that!!!!

And I remember how much you talked about how you would love to be with the Cathedrals. I think I was almost as thrilled you were when you got that chance!!!

We were really had a great treat that night! There were several songs that I (we) wanted to hear, but didn't want to be selfish So, we just wrote down a couple VERY favorites, I Sing The Mighty Power Of God, and It Is Well With My Soul. I would travel a couple hundred miles just to hear them sing those. I have never heard anyone sing them with such power and feeling. My Glory Bumps had Glory Bumps! Everyone rose to their feet. I think we also had down We Have Come To Seek Your Face, but that one didn't make the program. My mom wanted them to sing He Is To Me, and another lady asked that, so we were just on cloud nine!
We did get to hear GV with Glen sing He Is To Me when they did a concert with L5. It was awesome!!! That was also one of the last times we saw Roger. It was extra special to see old friends in concert together. BTW, some of those photos are in my link below.

Hey Gerald, I enjoy the new song "It Means Just What It Says." My only complaint with the cd is that I think there should be more upbeat, straight-ahead songs like this on it. Get energetic, tear it up like you did with "My Name Is Lazarus." Not a slam, just an opinion. I really think you have a terrific ministry going on and the ability for you to hold Jason and Rodney with you for this long is very commendable. God bless.

As a matter of fact, I am just starting to think about songs for a new instrumental recording. I hope to get it finished in early 2008. Any suggestions?

I don't mind the criticism at all. The fact is, it is impossible to record a CD that everybody, everywhere, likes every song. If we did an entire CD of up tempo songs, I'd get complaints about not having any medium tempo songs, or ballads. Every artist is in a "no win" situation when it comes to that, since everyone has a personal opinion of what's good. Our goal is to record songs that really have something to say, then try to find the right mix of tempos to make the recording appeal to the wide range of folks who listen to our music.

Very true. I understand, but I would argue that many fans actually like your upbeat songs just as much as your ballads. I think a 50/50 ratio of songs like "So Much God" and songs like "God Wants To Hear You Sing," (both from the excellent "Perfect Candidate") would be a big hit. In other words, my opinion of a perfect GV album would look something like this:

1. Paid In Full
2. So Much God
3. Faces
4. He'd Still Been God
5. God Wants To Hear You Sing
6. It Means Just What It Says
7. Soon We Will See
8. My Name Is Lazarus
9. Heaven's Hero
10. He's Still Waiting By The Well

Not necessarily in that order, but several upbeat or midtempo openers followed by a deep ballad followed by another faster-paced song followed by another slower one. I don't know, maybe I'm just loopy, but that would be my ideal GV album.

So the solution would be for people to buy several different CDs by the group and rotate them so they would get just the right combination, right?

I would enjoy a CD of you on the piano and also singing nothing but hymns from a hymnal. I would definitely buy it.

By the way, when my son and I saw you guys in July, I really enjoyed your joke about how you didn't want people listening to Keys To Quiet Places while driving because you didn't want to be responsible if anyone fell asleep and had an accident.

I don't have any suggestions about an instrumental CD, but I have an idea that I am going to throw out in public for other folks to re-shape, shoot down , or otherwise play with. I keep thinking about GV doing a tribute to the Goodman family. Not a blatant "we're going to sing every hit song by the Goodmans even though we know only the Goodmans could do that," but rather an actual tribute to the Goodmans. In my mind, it would contain several Goodman songs that were not very well known. In other words, not to fill it with "The Lighthouse," "Jesus Pilots My Ship," and "God Walks the Dark Hills," but instead maybe "Heartbeat from Heaven," "It's a Wonderful Feeling," and so on. Stuff that a lot of younger fans either wouldn't recognize or at least wouldn't have copies of. Then there should also be one or two of their better known songs, and one or two new songs by Rodney (maybe) that Howard, Rusty, or Vestal *would have* sung if somebody had pitched them that direction. Maybe this is a better table album idea, because I really don't go for copycatting, but I think that you guys could take this idea and pull it off! I wonder how wrong I would be if I guessed that it had occurred to Gerald before ...

I also wanted to say something else, since I know now that Gerald reads this thread. August a year ago, I got the Perfect Candidate album for my birthday. (Yeah, I'm always a little behind!) I was playing it for my brother that evening ... He had been going through a terribly tough battle. He'd been personally attacked and kinda had his back stabbed by friends, and was fighting depression, and I really think having a rougher time than most 19-year-olds usually deal with. When "You'll Carry Me Through" came on, he just put his head in his hands and sobbed through the whole song. It is still really special to him, and so of course it is to me too, and I just thought maybe you and Rodney would like to know that! I know that is your goal in what you're doing.

Thanks for that touching story, Amy. By the way, Gerald, if I were your producer I would consider the musical style of "Perfect Candidate" as a model for future projects.

As far as the cd idea: I think it would be an interesting cd, but I would not wish to see another full-blown Goodman cd right after the Perrys made a smash with "Remembering..."

No, I don't either, and I don't think that's exactly what I mean. OTOH, I haven't ever heard the Perrys', so who knows. Jot it down for future reference.

But didn't the Perrys do better known ones, and didn't they try to do them to sound like the Goodmans? That's not what I would want. Only the Goodmans are the Goodmans. I think I mean this ... I can feel the Goodmans' influence on GV sometimes. I can feel it on "It's Just Like Heaven" and 1 or 2 others, even though I'm not aware of them having done those songs themselves. I would like a CD where that "essence of Goodman" is distilled and "saturates" the music a little more. I'm not even sure it ought to exactly reference the Goodmans in the title. The Goodmans should not be the ones selling this CD; Greater Vision is. Hope that clarifies what a meant a little more; of course, you're still welcome to disagree! I'm not sure myself that it's a viable idea right now, like you said.
