22. Cyrano Andy This is a very good episode that doesn't seem to get much airplay. It begins in Ellie's living room with she and Andy, Barney and Thelma Lou singing. This is Thelmas Lou's first appearance and she remained his girlfriend ( except for the occasional daliance with Juanita and a few others, until he left the show). Andy indicates that there has been enough singing and pins Ellies to the arm of the couch for a little cooing and billing. Barney just can't seem to make his move on Thelma Lou (who, by the way, never seems to have a last name). The next day, after Andy teases him about not getting "a little kissy" Barney confesses that Thelma Lou is "the one", but he just can't bring himself to say the nice things he composes in his mind (when he is soaking his feet at night) when he is face to face. He wants to say the three little words that every woman loves to hear: "You're the cats", but can't get past talking about fingerprinting and the care of the .38 caliber revolver. Andy decides to speak to Thelma Lou on Barney's behalf, but she uses the occasion of Andy's visit to imply that Andy is courting her. She is hoping to make Barney jealous. At first Barney wants to fight Andy, then decides a better revenge would be to steal Ellie away. His clumsy attempts to be suave only amuse Ellie, who asks if he had been drinking. Barney exits with the lines: "You had your chance to fly with me baby, but you weren't woman enough. Now the baloon's going up without you". Andy and Ellie decide that the best strategy is to chase "their little rabbits" until they run back to each other. Andy comes on strong to Thelma Lou in the porch swing, even kissing her on the cheek, and Ellie vamps Barney, kissing him on the jaw. The strategy works and everything is back as it should be. Barney is at his comic best, especially in the scenes where he tries to fight Andy, then states his intention to resign; the attempted seduction of Ellie; and his righteous indignation when Ellie turns the tables on him. His "Well" as he puts his hat on and marches out is great. The closing scene is hilarious. There is another songfest at Ellies, and Barney, not so subtly, signals Andy to help Ellie in the Kitchen. Barney tries to make his move for the first kiss, but Andy keeps bursting in: "Want cream with your coffee?", "Want some pie?", "Want some cheese on your pie?" until Barney gives up in frustration.

23. Andy and Opie, Housekeepers After scolding Andy and Opie for being so messy (probably the only time the Taylor house is messy), Aunt Bee is called away to care for a sick relative. She is sure that the boys will be unable to fend for themselves. Of course, she is right. The house is soon a wreck. There is a funny scene where Andy washes dishes and opie "dries" them, first by waving them in the air, then by wiping them on his sleeve. Finally, they resort to borrowing dishes. When Aunt be calls and is coming home early, Andy and Opie rush around making the house spotless. They then realize that Aunt Bee will feel that she has no purpose and set out to mess up the house again as much as possible before she arrives. Unfortunately, Bertha Johnson (later Clara Johnson, and finally Clara Edwards) comes by and cleans everything up beautifully. Aunt Bee is crestfallen, and our boys shocked, to see the spotless house. Opie runs upstairs to mess up yet again while Andy dirties the kitchen. Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier is said to have been a fine stage actress) really shines in this episode, showing great range of emotion. It is quite touching to see her unhappiness and heartwarming to see her exhuberance in the mess. The closing scene shows Bertha/Clara coming by to see what Bee thought of her efforts. She leaves indignant when Aunt Bee relates what a filthy pig sty it was. Not a bad episode, but the scene of Opie and Jimmy playing in the bedroom runs way too long, and it's never the same if Barney doesn't make an appearance.

24. The New Doctor The cast is really getting into their roles now, and this is a very funny episode. Andy assumes that Ellie "understands" that they will be going to the social together, but Aunt Bee warns that he shouldn't take anything for granted. When Andy goes to the drugstore to ask her, she introduces him to the new doctor, a young, handsome and single new Doctor, Bob Benson. Barney quickly assumes that Ellie and the doctor will hit it off: "two and two makes four", because the nature of their work will throw them together: "Listen to that, two young people lost in a world of pills." The doctor makes many trips to the drugstore (he doesn't have a phone yet), duly noted by Barney, who goes "undercover". Barney even makes an appointment with the doctor for a checkup. While the doc is taking his blood pressure: "I've just never seen it wrap around that many times", Barney is trying to tell him how jealous Andy is over Ellie: "A man like that ought not to have a gun." Dr. Benson decides that Barney needs shots and a special diet to raise his blood pressure. Then he asks what it was Barney was saying about Sheriff Taylor. Barney: "Never mind about him, am I going to pull through". Andy calls on Ellie to make sure that they will be going to the social together, only to be interrupted by "Bob" droppping in. Andy is getting more and more flustered as it ends up that the three of them will be going together. Eliie says Bob has not had time to meet many people. Andy: "Well, there's a lot of flu and colds going around, you'll make friends." When the "romance" seems to be escalating, Barney goes on an hilarious surveillance operation. First he fakes leaving the store, then we see the famous "duck walk" for the first time as he sneaks to the back, only to hear Ellie and Bob talking about marriage - and Andy performing the ceremony! Barney has missed the part about Bob's fiance. Barney rushes back to give Andy the bad news, and Andy storms out to "fight for what's mine." In his haste to follow, Barney locks himself in the cell. Andy breaks in on the conversation between Ellie and the doctor to stake his claim, and ends up proposing to Ellie before he learns that Bob has a fiance. This leads to a great exchange: Andy: Well, Eleanor, it appears that we have embarked on an engagement period... and that ought to be a good looong period." Dr. Benson: "What do you consider a proper engagement period, sheriff, five years?" Andy: "You're on the right track there." Eliie cleverly saves the day by noting that she hasn't accepted and turns Andy down. Overcome with happiness, Andy plants a big kiss on Ellie's forehead. Clever final scene where Andy and Barney overhear what appears to be sweet talk between Ellie and the doctor, Barney: "they're at it again." It turns out to be a joint effort in repairing Opie's skinned elbow. Lots of funny scenes in this one.

25. A Plaque For Mayberry The ladies of the Historical Society are going to award a plaque to a direct descendent of Revolutionary War hero Nathan Tibbs. They mysteriously choose to announce this before actually identifying the descendent. Naturally, Barney believes that he will be the honoree, and finds some dubious evidence in the library. As he tells Andy, when questioned about the "family tree": "I deduced the rest." The descendent turns out to be town drunk Otis Campbell, which throws the Mayor and Council into a tizzy. They insist that Andy get a substitute for Otis. Andy, of course, doesn't have the heart to do it. Despite being late (due to walking slowly because of his new, too tight, shoes), Otis and wife show up looking spiffy and Otis makes a touching little speech before presenting the plaque to the town. Absolutely hilarious moment: The beginning scene is the first of several to come in which Barney seeks to interrogate or test Otis in some way (Otis always wins). Barney wants to give Otis sobriety test before he leaves after serving his 24 hours. Andy: "The time to give him a sobriety test was last night." Barney: "You know he was too drunk to take a sobriety test last night." Andy relents and Barney starts with asking Otis to recite Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, except that Barney can't say it without Otis' help. Barney then gives Otis the "close your eyes and touch your fingers together" test, which results in Otis pinching the nose of the too closely observing Barney. I'm laughing now just thinking about it. Finally, Barney tests Otis' stamina by asking him to jump on one leg for a while then change "hmmmph". Barney jumps along with him, and Otis leaves Barney exhausted. After Otis leaves, Andy tells Barney he should send his sobriety test to the FBI; "Call it the Barney Fife Peter Piper nose pinching test." I would love to have a DVD with just the scenes between Otis and Barney.

I wouldn't mind some input about my reports on the episodes. Are they too long? boring? incomplete? too much information? not enough information?, etc. Thanks

I'm waiting for you to get to Aunt Bea's Medicine Man. That's my favorite! I have a very limited amount of them on DVD. I bought a collection back when DVD collections were first coming out. It only has about 40 of them on there. I was thinking about looking back through this thread at some of the ones you've mentioned to see if they are on my collection or not.

Especially since I no longer have DishNetwork and don't get to watch the show - with the exception of having a weekday off to watch it on one of our local channels or to watch the occassional episode on SkyAngel. Kerr's post give me a lift and a smile as I fondly remember these episodes.

I forgot to mention, in A Plaque For Mayberry, we learn that Barney's middle name is Oliver, the only time I recall that being mentioned.

26. The Inspector In one of the great opening scenes, Barney is playing checkers against himself, changing seats after each move, and using appropriate facial expressions. Andy asks him how he is doing, Barney says: "won two and lost two". Andy inquires if Barney plays other games against himself. Barney: " I play a little two-handed rob-the-deck casino, and occasionally I play myself a four hand parcheesi." Andy: "Well, if you ever play yourself a game of ping-pong, call me, because that I've got to see. Here's the mail, see if you've wrote yourself a letter". Barney: "You just don't know when to quit, do you?" The mail contains a package from the Hubacher brothers up at state prison. The boys are learning leathercraft, and sent gifts. "Junior was on parole for a while, but now he's back and we are all together and happy." The mail also contains a note that a state inspector is coming that day. It turns out not to be Andy's old fishing buddy, Sam Allen, but Ralph Case, a hard-nosed inspector. Barney rushes out to find a prisoner and gets a drunk Otis, who is depressed because it's his birthday and noone remembered. The inspector finds Otis asleep in the Sheriff's chair, and Barney says: "he's on work detail, the Sheriff like to keep prisoner's busy, and I guess I over-worked him." Misadventures abound, with Barney's gun going off after the Inspector orders him to put his bullet in his gun, Andy wearing a "trick or treat" tie and fishing hat that Opie brings over - "should I wear the brim up or down, maybe down for evening and up for day"- and our boys locking themselves in the cell. The inspector lets them out and announces that he is calling his boss for support in impeachment proceedings. Andy gets serious and stands up to the Inspector- "You can threaten me all you want, but you're scaring my deputy half to death and I wish you'd stop it." Someone rushes in and says that Old Luke has barricaded himself in and is firing away at the world because someone threatened to report his still. The actor playing Luke (Jack Prince) later plays Rafe Hollister. He was offered a regular role on the show but declined becaue he felt it would interfere with his singing career. Andy bravely marches into the gunfire (witnessed by Inspector Case's boss) and rounds up Old Luke. The Inspector's trivial grievances (birthday cake, doilies, the fishing hat) seem silly now. Andy:" That boy's been working too hard, he needs a vacation". The Mayberry Sheriff's department passes inspection.

Have you ever noticed that in the opening credits when the announcer says: "The Andy Griffith Show, starring Andy Griffith", he always sounds surprised?

I forgot to watch the 4 pm show on our local channel. However, the episode that I watched at 12 was the one where the town makes a record and Andy thinks they are getting ripped off by investing in the record deal, but it turns out that the record producer is honest.

27. Ellie Saves A Female This may not make sense, but I always expect this episode to be funnier than it is. A teenage farm girl, Frankie Flint, yearns for the cosmetics displayed at Ellie's drug store, and Ellie convinces Andy to take her out to the farm to deliver a gift package to the girl. Frankie's stern father forbids her to have them and eventually orders Ellie off his property. Barney's ego kicks in and he promises to convince Flint to let Frankie use the "female war paint". Flint makes short work of Barney, who decides to "arrest" Frankie on the sly and brings her back to Ellie's house. Eliie's makeover is so good that when Andy and Ellie take "Frances" back, her father doesn't even recognize her. He reluctantly orders her back to work and gives a touching explanation of why she can't go in for those frilly things; "This farm is all we've got, me and Frankie, and all we have to work it with is our own four hands. I'd like to say 'thank you ma'am, and grateful', but I've got to say 'Frankie, get them things off, and go back to work'". Andy then shows a good grasp of economics, and convinces Flint that his best use of his "asset" is not as "Fankie, the fair farmhand", but as "Frances, the quite a girl", who can mate up with a strong young farmboy (four are located conveniently just over the fence) who will make an even better farmhand. Note: One has to wonder how hardworking the boys next door were, since four of them worked all day in the same spot. The main humor is provided by Andy (and later Barney) being sprayed by Midnight Madness perfume and by Barney duck-walking around the Flint barn and hen house, hiding and waiting for the chance to "arrest" Frankie.
