From Episode #27, R.G. Armstrong played Farmer Flint. He appeared in the B-horror flick, THE CAR in 1977, and it was quite odd to see him spouting profanity at every turn......

28. Andy Forecloses Mean old Ben Weaver's Christmas spirit must have worn off by springtime, because he is trying to foreclose on the Scobies (played by the same actors who played the Muggins in the Christmas Story episode). Andy comes up with the money to catch up the payment, but Ben, who wants the land for his new warehouse, is playing hardball. As the town starts a "save the Scobies" fundraiser - a rummage sale- Andy comes up with reason after reason to delay. Andy even pockets Lester Scobie's glasses so he can't read the foreclosure notice. Ben finally forces Andy into action. A comment by Barney gives Andy the idea that Ben just can't see how mean he really is. Andy storms into the Scobie house and demands that they move immediately. By the time he has Mrs. Scobie in tears, Ben is demanding that Andy stop the foreclosure. Andy quietly slips Lester his "lost" glasses, and the family realizes that Andy was on their side after all. Ben sits down in a defective chair and asks "Where did you get this piece of junk?" Andy reads the label and it says "Weaver's Dept. Store". Ben says he will send out a new one tomorrow. The final scene, where Andy and Ben are going fishing, reveals that Lester Scobie is now working for Weaver at the store. The funniest moments are the opening scene when Andy finds Juanita's number in Barney's ticket book after Barney hides the book in his hat. We learn that Barney, like his mother, doesn't like anyone to touch his hat. Andy makes Barney call the diner where Juanita works to make a "trouble check", which is Barney's excuse for having the number. The other hilarious moment is the end where Andy sneaks back in to the courthouse and quietly positions himself at Barney's shoulder as Barney first sings to Juanita: Neeta, Juaaaanita, no name is sweeta... and at this moment Andy joins in. The expressions on Andy's face and Barney's exasperation are priceless.

I've always liked that episode. I saw the one today where the circus comes to town and Jerry Van Dyke winds up covering for Barney, who is out of town. I wonder why they didn't have Jerry come on the show as Barney's replacement? No one could really replace Don Knotts, but Jerry would have been good. One of the elders in our church, who is also a good friend, grew up down the street from Dick and Jerry Van Dyke. He said both men wanted to be in show business. He said he felt that Jerry would go farther than Dick because he was more of a clown and the more outgoing of the two.

At one point I didn't care for Jerry Van Dyke (MY Mother the Car), but I came to appreciate him. He made the show Coach, IMO, and adds a lot to any show where he appears. I think you are right, he would probably have been a great replacement for Barney, though I think Warren doesn't get his due.

29. Quiet Sam A mysterious new farmer in town has aroused the curiousity of Barney and others. Sam Becker seems distracted, doesn't stop to talk with the courthouse gang, and rushes off after stocking up on medical supplies. Barney deduces that he is a criminal who has someone at his farm "with a bullet in him". As a big storm approaches Mayberry, Barney insists that Andy go with him to check out Sam (which is apparently a very common name in Mayberry). The mystery deepens when our boys find Sam plowing a field at night as the storm approaches. When a blinking house light signals Sam to jump off his tractor and run to the house, Barney is convinced that trouble is afoot. Interestingly, Barney thinks that Sam is growing marijuana, and says this matter of factly, even pronouncing it right. It seems so incongruous to hear marijuana mentioned in Mayberry, where moonshine is still the vice of choice (and the manufacture of which is punished by two days in jail). It's almost as if Barney has said "abortion", it seems so out of place. Anyway, Andy calmly and logically counters each of Barney's fears, and has a plan: "We'll go back to town, you'll make your 11 o'clock rounds, and I'll go to the office and have a cup of coffee". While Barney is rattling door knobs, Andy gets a call and rushes out to Sam's farm, where we eventually find that Mrs. Becker (who we never see) is birthing a baby. Otis gets the message mixed up, Barney jumps to conclusions, and a posse begins to form. Barney asks Floyd if he has a gun: "A gun, a gun, oh my, the Mrs. has a stick that she uses to prop the cellar door open when she goes to get preserves". (so Floyd is not a widower yet) Eventually Barney gets to the farm and gets the story straight, but in his haste and the confusion, he had not received the message to bring Aunt Bee. So Andy is going to have to deliver the baby since the Doc is out of town. Andy tells Sam he has done this "plenty of times", but Barney points out that Andy has never delivered a baby, and in fact flunked biology in high school. Barney's job is to distract Sam, and they tell war stories (apparently Barney was in WW II: "I did my part to whip the dreaded hun" and Sam was in Korea, where they wanted to give him a purple heart for backing into a hen house and being spurred by a rooster. Great line by Barney: "I was across the big pond, I was second in command of a unit - me and a second lieutenant were in charge of the PX library on Staten Island". Andy saves the day and helps deliver the baby during the war talk, then goes outside for a cigarette, one of several times he smoked on the show. The posse shows up (although Floyd is clutching a rock since the Mrs. wouldn't let him bring her stick), but misses the excitement. The episode ends with the townspeople at Sam's place throwing a party celebrating the arrival of little "Andy". Nice episode, but not as funny as others. It demonstrates the innovative camera work and lighting techniques that the show was known for.

You're right, that episode isn't as funny as the others, but it is very touching. I still get choked up when Sam comes out and tells Andy that he can't get little Andy to stop crying.

30. Barney Gets His Man A three time loser named Eddie Brooke escapes from state prison. Barney catches him littering and holds him to write a ticket. He tries to bribe Barney, and while Barney is lecturing Eddie, the state police drive by. Eddie trips over Barney in his haste to escape and Barney ends up on top of him, allowing the state troopers to re-capture the crook. A furious Eddie vows to get Barney. Everyone in town is praising Barney and he eats it up - "Well, he might have been hurt, he might have been killed". At the party in his honor, Barney learns that Brooke has escaped again and may be headed to Mayberry. Andy and Barney are out in the woods (the same woods by the lake that are in every outdoor episode) lookng for Brooke. Barney stays real close to Andy. In one of the funniest scenes, IMO, Andy climbs a tree to look for the convict and turns to see Barney sitting beside him in the tree (thus having left their guns on the ground). Andy deduces that Eddie is in the barn and leaves Barney there while watching from the outside. As the crook climbs from the loft, Andy hits a milk can with a rock, causing Barney to draw and fire accidentally, which causes Eddie to surrender. Barney swallows the giant wad of gum that he has been chewing. The episode ends with Barney getting his (now) well earned victory party.

31. The Guitar Player Returns Local guitar pickin' legend Jim Lindsay is back in town, sporting his fancy "set of threads" and a little red Mercedes. Jim still has remarkable talent, playing an electric guitar without a power source or amps, and playing lead and rhythm at the same time. After Barney gives Jim a 1/2 block parade escort to the hotel, Jim settles into town for a little R&R before his next big gig. He has left Bobby Fleet and His Band With a Beat for a solo career, but it turns out that nothing is happening for him as a solo act. It somes to light that Jim is broke. His car is repossessed and everything he purchases in town is by "put it on my tab". He eventually is about to skip town (leaving a gold watch as payment), but Andy arrests him and (once again) makes him talk to Bobby Fleet. They patch up their differences and Jim rejoins the band. Notes: I like this Bobby Fleet a lot better than the last one. Later there is another one that I like better still. James Best (Jim Lindsay) is not seen in the show again, to my recollection. He is so inspired by Andy that he becomes a sheriff himself (Dukes of Hazzard).

32. Bringing Up Opie The season finale features Opie, who Aunt Bee feels is spending too much time at the jail. He has started using terms like "snoot full", and learning how to put up wanted posters and fast draw. The final straw is when Opie handcuffs a classmate to the flag pole. Aunt Bee has Opie at home doing fun things, such as planting spinach. He quickly becomes bored, but shows tremendous concentration in playing the worlds longest game of "kick the can". Along the way, Opie tries to pry open a condemned mine and is almost caught in a cave-in. He kicks the can a while longer then swaps it for some green apples. After eating five or six, he curls up in the back of a truck and falls asleep. It turns dark while he is in the truck, and the delivery driver takes him to the next town. Andy, Barney and Aunt Bee are worried sick until they get the phone cal that he is safe. Andy is going to punsh Opie, but everyone realizes that the problem is that he needs to spend time at the courthouse with his father. There is nothing really funny about this episode, but it is poignant and displays what a really great little actor Ron Howard was. IMO it was weak for a season finale, but they can't all be gems. On to Season 2.

I saw one yesterday that was not one of my favorites (no Barney, for one thing) where Roger Hanover, an old beau of Aunt Bea comes to visit, and being an apparent freeloader, decides he might want to ask her to marry him and become Andy's new uncle. Not a hilarious episode, but there is one funny line where Opie is trying to get Andy to tell him what he thinks of Roger. Andy has already confided to Floyd the barber that he can't stand Roger, but, not wanting to sound negative to Opie, and always the diplomat, reminds Opie that he should always try to find the good in everybody. After a few minutes of give and take, Opie says "you're right Pa...I don't like him either." Mike

33. Opie and the Bully Season 2 starts pretty much the way Season 1 ended, featuring Ron Howard's abilities as actor in a story with a strong moral. When opie is found to have asked for extra milk money two days in a row, Andy becomes suspicious. We see that a young street extortionist named Sheldon is demanding Opie's milk money in exchange for walking on "his" street, or else "knuckle sandwich". Opie tries to reason with the little thug: "It sure is hard chokin' down a peanut butter sandwich dry", but to no avail. Sheldon is not totally heartless, as he offers some friendly advice: "drink water". Barney stakes out Opie, and finds out what is going on. The only funny moment in the episode is when Barney is watching the interchange between Opie and the bully through a hole cut in a newspaper. When the paper's rightful owner comes on his porch, where Barney is sitting, Barney gives him the paper, then comes back and gives him the circle that was cut out. Andy prepares Opie to stand up for himself by telling him the story of how Odie Snitch ran Andy off from his prize fishing spot when he was Opie's age, and how Andy stood up to Odie, laughed when Odie hit him (because being hit wasn't nearly as bad as being afraid), and lit into Odie like a windmill in a tornado. The next morning Opie comes into Andy's room for a boost of confidence and to leave some spare clothes for Andy to take to the courthouse (just in case the others get dirty). The scene ends in a touching hug between father and son. Opie stands up to Sheldon and not only gets his nickels back, but is the proud owner of a shiny black eye: "Ain't she a beaut, Paw", that Opie wants to last as long as possible, and Andy agrees. "You know something Paw, a sandwich sure does taste better with milk." Side note: This is one of the few times that we see Andy's room. The neat thing is that Andy's room has a door to the outside (it's open to a small porch or landing), something that I never remember seeing again. I had to scan the DVD back just to verify. This would have been handy for Andy if he came in late from Sheriffing.

33. Opie and the Bully My favorite part of that episode is how obviously difficult it is for Andy to let Opie fight his own battle. But, he knew Opie had to be the one to stand up to the bully.

34. Barney's Replacement Barney is feeling a little insecure because of a couple of comments by Andy that Barney perceives as criticism of the way he does his job. About the same time, the state District Attorney sends a young lawyer to serve as a deputy for a while to learn the practical side of police work. Barney is immediately on the defensive and tells Thelma Lou that he will do nothing to help the "new deputy", Bob Rogers. Bob doesn't need any help, as he has read the police manual, and puts some changes into effect, earning Andy's praise. Barney is convinced that Andy wants to hire Rogers as his deputy and fire Barney, but is too nice to say so. (We have to suspend logic temporarily to accept that Barney could really believe that a lawyer in the D.A. office in Raleigh would give up that job to be a Mayberry deputy). Barney breaks out the ole "salt and pepper" and hits the sidewalk selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. He is, of course, not successful as none of his potential customers take him seriously. Clara: "Did you lose a bet, Barney." Emma: "Well, if you aren't a deputy, you had a lot of nerve arresting me for jaywalking." When Bob Rogers asks if Barney has obtained a permit to sell door-to-door, Andy sees his chance and tells Bob to arrest Barney. The expected result occurs. Barney is back on the force, smug as ever, and Bob learns a valuable lesson about dealing with people. side note: This is the second time (the first was in Barney Gets His Man) that I spotted a black person in Mayberry. Both times it was a woman (not the same one) observing some action. The first time the woman watched Barney and the state troopers arrest the escaped convict, in this episode the woman watched Bob fix the siren on the car.

She was from Greensboro (I know that because she was speaking of the meaning of her name and "it means native of Lydia---but that's not where I'm from. I'm from Greensboro.") Anything Andy liked, she didn't. She doesn't mind a saxophone, but she hates the guitar. She hates to chit-chat--she doesn't mind ordinary conversation but she hates to chit-chat. She hates being out in the sun because it gives her "the herpes."

Mona, you are right (as usual), Before Lydia was Goobers's girl, Barney set her up with Andy, where she said all the funny things you mentioned. I'm confusing the two episodes in my mind, but both were hilarious. She shot down every idea. Bowling? "I'd be in traction for a week." Movie? "Seen it last week." Bridge? "I don't gamble."
