Hi rgod,

I loved my experience at UCSB. Except for all that reading, everything else was awesome. Nice campus overlooking the Pacific Ocean (literally).

FYI- The 10 UC schools are very diverse. The majority of students are Asians. That theory of Asians being the so-called "model minorities" is so true. They are smart and study very hard.

Guess what? My roommate during my senior year was a graduate student. He gave me some great insight, inspiration, and encouragements that helped me too succeed. Go grad students!

Karlie that sounds really great. I thought about psychology myself but ended up doing a digital media/film degree masters. But, when I'm finished, I'm thinking about pursuing a PhD in educational psychology because I really want to use the power of the arts to educate - but not in an obvious way. I'm still praying my way through that one - and I have about a year or two before I make my decision about what I want to do once I'm out of here.

I have a friend who went back to school while she was in her 50s - now she is counseling and doing all sorts of things - whole new worlds have opened up for her. I'm excited for you -- working with children is such an important calling!

I'm glad you decided to post! It is so cool that you are going back. Congratulations on starting again! I've heard of medical transcription, but I'm not quite sure what it is. Is it transcribing doctors notes or entering patient information in a database? It seems like medical transcriptionists are always in demand.

I can truly relate - a lot of the people in my program are quite a bit younger than me (about 10 years or so). I attended a meeting today where they were talking about what they wanted to do as a department - but our needs are so different. I like socializing as much as the next person - and it is such a blessing to get to know people. But additionally, I really want to get into this program, learn all that I can, really take advantage of every opportunity, then move on to the next phase. I feel such an urgency in my spirit - like I don't want to waste time, you know?

I'm sorry to hear about the experience with your "friend." That was pretty lousy. But it sounds like God provided someone else to give you what she didn't. I'm glad that you didn't let that discourage you (although that must have been hard at times).

I feel blessed too to be a student, even if it means that I might have to "dine" on ramen or hot dogs a couple of nights a week. The opportunities available and the chance to learn are just priceless. I hope you and your hubby have a great semester. Stay strong!!!!

UCSB is on the pacific ocean -- now I'm jealous :) I just saw the picture on the homepage - if it weren't for the pixelation that would occur - I'd use it for my desktop wallpaper. I love the mountains. It is nice to hear that the school is diverse - I think that I would enjoy that. For the last 12 years or so I've lived and worked in very diverse areas and I really enjoy meeting lots of interesting people; learning about different cultures - even the different cultures within our country. I'm only sorry that I'm not so good at learning languages. I find that learning a language helps you to understand the way in which people frame their world. I love finding points of similarity with other people also. I guess what is boils down to is that people are just people, whereever you go. Hmmm ... maybe I should have studied sociology???

Way to go! I am 45. I went to a diploma program nursing school immediately out of high school and have been working as a registered nurse since graduation. I have some problems with my back that are making it more difficult to take care of my patients. To move into a case management job or something that will be less difficult on my back I need my bachelors so I'm back. I'm attending Ohio State's RN-BSN program. It is weird being in class with teens and I'm much older than you. There are times that I'm either the same age as the Prof or older.

Hello everyone,
This quarter I am taking 10 credit hours of class. (This is plenty working 3 12 hour shifts each week) History 151 (American History to 1877) and then Intoduction to Ethics. I'm into the second week.
I'm not enjoying Ethics and am praying that as I'm called upon to argue homosexuality, abortion, euthenasia and many more controversial subjects that I can glorify our LORD in my responces. I am the oldest in the class and could be mom to any of the other students.
I am amazed that theories such as Cultural Relativism are even taught, but perhaps I've had my head lost in my own life so much that I've not seen what's been going on in the world around me. God is moving me out of my comfort zone with this one!

Hi Melaniemom,

I can totally relate. My Film Studies professor asked us to make a documentary film on any of our current mainstream issues that are most important to us. I did a documentary on doing missionary work for my church and sharing the Gospel.

My professor was angry at my film and he asked me to re-do it centered around a secular topic. I refused and so he gave me a "C-" and wrote some nasty comments on my project. We all have to stand up to what we believe in even if it means persecution.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, "we can do it!"

Hi everyone!

I hope that midterms are coming along ok for all you!!! How's everyone doing concerning the readings and projects? I hope well!!!!

It is interesting MelanieMom and and Bibleman to hear you talk about relativism. So much of what I'm learning about is postmodernism and relativism. It is quite interesting - I listen to it, seek to understand it, but don't believe it. I recognize that it is a passing fad.

I wrote about my beliefs and turned in a paper on Tuesday (our teacher wanted us to make a statement about art). I am praying about my final projects. I will probably run into some problems with one of my professors who is really anti-christian and into the new age. But, we'll see. In any event, I'm willing to "take a bullet for Jesus" - as I heard a preacher say last Sunday. Let the chips fall where they may.

I am really enjoying my classes. God is really helping me. I've never felt so focused in my life; God is lining everything up - everything is fitting so perfectly. I'm really in awe. I didn't want to come to this school but feel that God sent me here. Now I see why. This is the exact right place for me - it gives me courage to follow God in all things.

Actually, I'm taking 8-week intensive classes, so today is the last day of class. I'm procrastinating this morning, but this afternoon, I have to finish my research paper.

This is my first class in 10 years!! I've learned that my concentration wasn't all that great back then, and it's not any better now. [:D] When I get "stuck" I turn my attention elsewhere for "just a second" that turns into a minute, that turns into five minutes!!

I'm enjoying the class, too. It has been a challenge for me, though. In some ways, they are teaching things that are, in slight ways, opposite from the kind of work I'm doing now. Or at least the way I do the work. Social Work and Counseling are very similar, but very different in subtle ways. So I find myself arguing with the text or spending hours talking to my co-workers about it.

I am a grandma and graduated with my first degree in 2005. I am now studying part time for my Masters degree in Biblical Studies. It is great to see so many mature students here.

Wow - this is awesome!!!!!

I'm so excited to hear about everyone who is pursuing their education! And two grandmothers - I hope that if one day I am a grandmother I'll continue to learn and grow as well!

Floydette and DianeBub - what are you studying? Followinghim, I once thought about pursuing an MA in Theology. Do you have lots of Greek/Hebrew in your studies, or are you working more with the english biblical texts themselves?

Grace-n-mercy - a belated congratulations on completing your 8-week intensive. I can so relate to you on the concentration part. In fact, I've got a ton of work to do and right now I'm typing in this forum. :) But this is the last message and then off to work I go. Are all of your classes 8-week intensives or are they just selected classes?

As for me, I have tons to do, but I'm really loving it. I like all of my classes, the research, the theory, everything. I just feel like I don't have enough time to do it justice - but I'm trying. I do struggle with being tired though and the aforementioned concentration - and my brain feels like it is just slowly c h u g g i n g along sometimes. But in the past 9 weeks there has been a marked improvement in my reading comprehension and retention skills. I'm thankful to the Lord because otherwise, I don't know if I would have made it!

I'm leaning on the Lord even more now to get through all of this - and I truly am thankful. A few more weeks guys and then it will be winter break! Then spring starts up again. Stay strong everyone!

I can't believe I didn't post in here earlier!

Right now I'm doing online courses through the Center for Defense and Homeland Security - these are for work. I am applying to UCONN for their Master's program in Homeland Security. Goal is to start in August 2008. That'll be 18 months. Then I intend to go on for my PhD, as I already know my dissertation topic.

My undergrad is in Disaster Managment, and I've already done some grad work in Atmospheric Sciences (meteorology). (yes, I know, not your traditional areas of study - LOL - but that's me - I NEVER do anything that's traditional except for church.)

In answer to your questions, my Masters is a Masters in Divinity with a concentration in Spiritual Formation. I would like to teach classes in Spiritual Formation at a graduate level, so, like Lisa I will have a PhD in my future as well. Unless of course God would like to gift with a job teaching sans the PhD. Although, seriously, I wouldn't mind doing it. I have my area chosen already, and am attempting to do alittle work now (in my free time - ha - ha).

They're all 8-week intensives. But I only take one class at a time. We'll have a few classes that are only one-week in length and held at the campus, but I think there's pre- and post-work that needs to be done.

I am studying for my Masters degree and I am 53. I love studying but still find it a bit hard not to be distracted by other things. I have loads of reading to do so I won't spend too much time reading the threads here.

I am 33 yrs old and have am in my second year of community college, getting my general classes out of the way....I have no idea what career field to choose, the career testing has not helped...I am so dismayed...I would like it if God would just tell me what to do, then equip my brain to do it. I have a heard time focusing and studying...I think i have an undiagnosed learning disorder that has kept me fearing school and this is why i am a late starter. I just feel so DUMB! Also I am a single divorced parent of 2, 15 & 9 yrs old, and live at my mom's house until I finish. However I feel like and am considered such a "loser" by societies standards. I feel completely inferior due to my circumstances...anyone else like me or feel the same?

Hello-

I haven't been to "School" since June 1988, and that was when I graduated high school. I am a 37yo mother of 6. I just applied to the local Community College and was accepted as a special student. I found it LAUGHABLE that they insisted on having my transcripts! [8D] Sure- you want them? You can have them. I am not the person I was back then but if that's what you value then...

I start the Spring semester and will only be taking a single 3 credit hour course, Photography I. I hope that it works out well. I would like to try to take 2 classes a semester and eventually get my Associates in Fine Arts:Photography. Not looking for a job or anything. Just want to be a better photographer. With homeschooing 6 kids I don't have time to be taking 16-20 credit hours a semester.

I chatted with the teacher today and she is very nice and excited that I am interested in the classes. She has my 17yo in her Art History I class this semester so I have heard a lot about her and she assures me that she has heard about me as well. Being a Special Student as well as a new student I have to wait til the last day of registration to register for the class but the teacher has told me that if the class is full she will add me herself. being wanted is a nice thing.

Challenges? Aside from the already mentioned ones? I am working on getting past my preconceived notions that the Community College is for young kids. I have seen several older folks in the classrooms and I know that there are more than 2 in the Art History class with my 17yo that are my mother's age(over 50, don't tell her I told ya). It is still hard to get past all those fresh faced kids in their trendy clothing.[8|] Yeah, I am a nerd. I am also fighting the urge to just say no because I don't have the time. Yet in the same breath I tell myself that I will never have the time- I have to MAKE the time... so that is coming along. LAST challenge to overcome- wondering if my children will think I am neglecting them as I pursue my own thing. Isn't mom supposed to WAIT until she is done with US before she goes off to college???

I am a bundle of nerves.

Hi, Ezri. Don't worry, you're not neglecting your kids by going back to school. They'll be so proud of you. Especially your 17-year-old.

When my son was born, I went to a community college and attended part-time. I saw a lot of older students. One lady was in her 70's! We just loved her! I loved those years at the community college - the teachers were so personable and loved their students. They were there for the right reasons. I still stay in contact with a few, even after all these years.

My son is now 18, and I decided it's time for me to head back to school once again. He's not feeling neglected in the least. Your others will learn to adapt. Other students I knew would have Pizza nights on the nights they had to go to school. The kids loved it. And they were all so proud of mom when she got her degree! That's a way of encouraging your kids to pursue their education in a way you can never imagine. My son recently decided he's going to go for an MD! Getting an education isn't even an option in our home.

I think, honestly, that the going back to school and showing your kids how important education thing backfired on me a bit. My kids have seent he amount of effort I put into college... and it kind of turned them off!!

I have been in college on & off since I graduated & had my son in '88. I went for a year while prenant/right after giving birth- that was a disaster!

Then I waited a few years and went back full-time & got an Associate degree in Early childhood ed. Worked from home for a while, then went back full-time for a BS in Applied Psych. Then went straight into a Master's program and have just registered for my last 6 credits for next semester! Yippee!!

Going to school was not a problem for my family, even full-time. I was still home enough that the house was clean, I cooked most nights, we spent a lot of time together... but I *have* at times (like now) both worked full-time & been in school full-time. That is rough. Now, I am gone 3 days a week from 6:30 am until 8:30-9:30 pm and two days for "just" 10-12 hours...

But, I made the decision that my family (not housework or anything like that though!) comes first... So, while they have had to pick up some slack & do more chores, cook their own dinner, etc., I spend time with them in the evening and my days off, even if it means I spend less time than I should on my assignments/studying.
