Halo is a real classic in the FPS world. The Halo 3 release is going to be craaaaazy. Anybody know what the difference between the regular, Limited, and Legendary editions are off the top of their head? I have people asking about it at work and I haven't had time to look yet.

I dont think i can go back to halo. like you said all it is is running around tanking. now shadowrun (yes i am pushing it hard cas its an awesome game) you dont have that. you can tank if you want. but for you i would sugest an elf with wired reflexes, teleport, and a katana. and maybe smoke. yea you wont be hit easy when you learn that combo.

oh and the difference is mainly packaging. and like you get a miniture helmet with one or something

My brothers and I just got Halo 3 the other day. Waited until midnight and played in a Halo 2 tournament at the game store. Totally awesome!

I found the campaign story to be moving and engrossing, even if it was a little shorter than I preferred. If you play the campaign and finish, wait until after the end credits to see a very good cutscene that turns the ending on its head.

And the multiplayer should be enough to keep your gaming time filled up for months. It's so much fun, and I can't wait to start using the Forge feature! Finally getting a chance to edit the multiplayer maps in such big ways is a very enticing opportunity.

Yeah, I'm such a Halo geek. So sue me. Hope to see you on Xbox Live!

I'm against buying a new system for a solitary game, despite how incredible the hype it's received.

Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 (256-PCI)... and it's killing me. I wanted to upgrade my 3D card, but all of the bigger ones are the PCI-E cards instead of PCI.

You don't have an AGP slot? Then you really do need to do a complete new system. PCI slots went out of the mainstream for video cards more than a decade ago. You must not have built this yourself if you've got a P4 without an AGP slot, and that's a shame, there are quite a few AGP cards that can beat an FX 5500 pretty handily.

It's my processor that's holding me back, not my video card. And for a reasonable upgrade to my processor, at this point, means a new motherboard, and that means new RAM, video card, PSU, and at that point I might as well just build a new system so that my old hard drive isn't a bottleneck, and I can try and turn my old PC into a PVR. *sigh* Two big obstacles to a new PC, though. Getting paid back by a friend I loaned money to, and getting my dad's approval (I'm 28 and live at home due to health problems. I could build the computer without my dad's okay, but I'd rather have a little more harmony around here than a shiny new boX0rs).

Oh well. Guess I can still look forward to getting The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass with my birthday money.

Dude........... I got a Dell.... Okay, sory for the pun, but yeah. I didn't build the computer, and I'm starting to wish I had. If I had an opportunity to select a computer now, I think I would probably go for one of the XPS 720's. Not that I am opposed to the idea of building a system from scratch, but that it would only cost an extra $200 or so to get a complete XPS then it would to get a new motherboard, processor, and fan box that are at least halfway decent.

How "bad" is your processor? I've got a 2.2 Ghz, and it's a relatively good speed for most programs.

I'm sure my roommates are going to be lined up for the new Zelda game.

1.4Ghz Athlon XP (performs somewhat equivalent to a 1.5-1.6Ghz P4). Things that it is inadequate for:
  • 480p video encoded in h.264 or MPEG4, and 720p content encoded in DivX or WMV, in both cases the video stutters too much to watch.
  • A lot of flash games run a lot slower than they should, some run too slow to play at all.
  • More and more flash ads are causing my system to slow to a crawl (thank goodness for AdBlock Plus).
  • More and more website re-designs are sucking up all my CPU cycles to render.
  • Half-Life 2 drops below 20FPS whenever I use the gravity gun, and below 10FPS in big fire fights, even with the video resolution at 800x600. Similar frame rate problems in Team Fortress 2. I play at 1024x768 2xAA 4xAF, since I get about the same frame rates as lower resolutions.

And that's not even counting all the recent games I haven't even bothered to try running.

yeah... time for an upgrade... I know that my 3d card is inadequate for Ghost Recon or Ghost Recon 2... but maybe I will get some monthly supports so I can scrape together enough money for an upgrade.

Okay, it's a "pipe dream" (bonus points if anybody gets it), but we'll see.

No, that's not the one, although it looks amazing.

Fracture is what I'm talking about. Alas, it's only releasing on the swanky systems such as the 360.

Interesting. Doesn't look like my cup of tea, but I could be biased because I'm holding a grudge against LucasArts for abandoning it's adventure game past (not even selling the games in it's Archives collections anymore).

EDIT: Almost forgot. I've had a chance to play a few hours of Team Fortress 2, and if you like online multiplayer and own an Xbox-360, PS3 or capable PC, then you need to get the Orange Box. TF2 is fantastic. The nine classes are well defined and each has their uses. Every time I thought that a class was frustrating and was about to rule it out as ineffective, I figured out how to use them, and started really having fun. I'm not even that great at the game, and it is a blast to play. The art design is top notch, the maps allow for surprising balance between the two teams, and the there are so many cool little touches (I love it when the Sniper waves to dead victims as he taunts them.)

Okay, gamers, if you'll look out the windows to your right, you'll see lots of little piggies soaring through the air.

Sonic the Hedgehog is going to be in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl

That is a link to the offical Smash Bros. website. Sonic is really going to duke it out with Mario. "Genesis does what Ninten-don't"? "Now you're playing with power!"? Blast-processing? Mode 7? It all squares off this December!

I may not buy this one at launch, but I am going to get it at some point.

(Oh, side note. Portal is awesome. Get the Orange Box now. )

Waiting being the key word. Did I say it was coming in December? It's been delayed again. It won't be out in the US until February according to some rumors.

Eh, Solid Snake has been expected since one of the earliest trailers for SSBB, and he's been on the official site since September 21st.

He does look like a cool character, but he's not exactly news.

I'm torn. On one hand, I don't really want to criticize your new purchase that you're obviously so excited about. On the other hand, there is an important issue here that I've seen many (on other forums) confused about, and making poor purchasing decisions because of.

So, fluffmonkey, if you don't want to hear criticism of your new computer, which still blows my 6 year old clunker out of the water, then please stop reading now.

    *
    **
    ***
    ****
    *****
    ******

There we go. The issue here is SLI or Crossfire, using two graphics cards in tandem to improve performance in gaming. The reality of the situation is that a single powerful card always out-performs two mid-range cards. SLI/Crossfire isn't perfectly efficient, two cards don't perform twice as well as one card. In fact, depending on the game and drivers, there may be anywhere from ~10% improvement (or performance decrease, with early drivers) up to maybe 80% performance increase at the highest resolutions with lots of AA and AF. Because of this, a $280 GeForce 8800GTS 320MB will deliver significantly more performance than two $140 8600 GT, and in a few cases, a single 8600 GTS will perform as well as two 8600 GT (depending on the clocks of the two cards, and which game with which drivers).

An example from Tom's Hardwdare video card charts. Two 8600GT in SLI get a barely playable 24.5 fps in Oblivion at 1280x1024. A single 8800 GTS gets 31.2 fps. The difference is even more remarkable in some other games. 38.3 fps versus 63.2 fps in Battlefield 2142 at the same resolution. Then there's "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (which runs on the Source engine, like Half Life 2 and the Orange Box, but DMoM&M is considerably more demanding). One 8800GTS gets 35.6 fps as 1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF, Two 8600GT get 16.2 fps, and One 8600GTS gets 16.0 fps (in the other games, 2x8600GT beat out 1x8600GTS by a larger margin.)

A lot of people don't know this, though. I've seen the question posed often enough on tech forums. They spend extra money getting an SLI/Crossfire capable motherboard, and get two mid-range cards hoping to get more performance, but the only time that SLI/Crossfire is of benefit over a single card is when you're pairing two top-end cards, and driving a really huge display to boot. (Using two graphics cards can also be used for running 3 or 4 monitors, but that's not actually an SLI/Crossfire thing.)

I do understand this... I own the game Oblivion..and play with everything high..and it runs very smooth with no problems at all.. and I also own Battlefield 2142 So I do understand ...all that your saying...I understood all of this when I got the PC But the thing is..I got this for very very good deal...pratically a steal.. I own other computers...I do my research So I know what I was getting... and its not like I cant get a nice 8800 gts card for it... Besides I didnt say this is my beast computer...lol

I used to play Counter-Strike Source. Garry's Mod. Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142. Now, however, I lack the time to play any of those.
