Okay, I've almost finished Half Life 2: Episode 2, and I can say that my computer was not up to the task. While I still had fun playing, there were far too many sections that were frustrating because of bad frame rates, especially the biggest battle so far, which was most likely the climax of the story line. I really need to play this game again when I get a better computer, I'm betting that giant outdoor battle is a pretty fun if you're not fighting your computer more than you are the Combine. That said, Valve has really impressed me with the Source engine, again. Wow, this game looks good, even when I've had to turn down settings, and it still runs pretty decent in indoor environments. Not bad for running on a processor that was mid-range when I bought it six years ago. Sure, a lot of the gameplay was variations on things that have been done before (defending an area with multiple entrances by setting up turrets, waiting for a slow elevator while getting attacked, using stepping stones over radioactive goo as hidden zombies pop-up) but it's all done so well, you almost forget there are only two new enemies in episode, and one new weapon that isn't even part of your inventory. I love that Valve carried over their Xbox Live achievements to the PC version. It's really fun to get a little pop-up in the corner telling you that you've fulfilled another one. I'm going to be sad when I run out of achievements in Team Fortress 2. Let me say again, if you own a capable PC, or an X-box 360, you should go out and get the Orange Box (PS3 version is coming out eventually). The games are fantastic. Portal is especially good. It's short, but that just means it doesn't overstay it's welcome. The humor in the game is dark, but not gruesome. The ending is absolutely fantastic, I can't remember the last time I actually was angered by a video game character, not because the game was difficult, but simply because the character was portrayed well enough to incite loathing. There are rumors that HL2:Ep3 will allow Gordon Freeman to use the portal gun. If Valve can weave that into the HL2 gameplay, that would be so awesome. (There's already a hack out to allow playing with the portal gun in the existing HL2 games, but allows you into all sorts of areas you're not supposed to go, and allows you to skip all sorts of obstacles. Fun to play with, but unbalances gameplay.) Oh, I also got a year's subscription to GameTap. I must say I'm having fun playing Psychonauts and one of the old Incredible Machine games (and I've got quite a playlist to move onto after I finish those). Seems like it'll be a pretty good value at $60 for the year. However, the Gametap interface is awful! I thought I appreciated Steam before, but doubly-so now.
