ORIGINAL: High_Hopes Another point I just wanted to make is the fact that masturbation, for both men and women, Is part of exploring your own body. This is a natrual thing and It would be hard for me to believe that there is anyone who has not at some point in their life explored their body it is only human curiousity and It is the body we are given for life so we may as well know the most about it as possible right? quote:
ORIGINAL: guitarmark I like what Dr. James Dobson says about it (paraphrasing): "I find it hard to believe that a loving God would put such a burning desire into the hearts of young men and then deny them the right to act upon it." So your thesis is that masturbation is “natural”? However, just because something is “natural” does not mean it is “lawful” according to the Bible. We could, by such logic, extend this to other acts as well. For instance, murder would be “natural” to a murderer, theft would be “natural” to a thief, adultery would be “natural” to an adulterer, lying would be “natural” to a liar, etc--but such actions are not “lawful” according to God’s revealed will. We are all “natural” born sinners, yet to use nature as an argument to sanction sin is fallacious in my opinion. Nature is fallen and so is our human nature. As well it can be argued by guitarmark’s logic quoting Dobson that if I have a burning desire to steal, lie, cheat or kill then what right does anyone have, even God himself, to deny me in acting upon it? quote:
ORIGINAL: High_Hopes Also by masturbating you can relieve stress. It also helps if you know what buttons to push, you can help your mate to know what works for you and what does not when expressing your love for each other. Stress can be relieved in a number of ways that don’t require orgasm. For instance, exercising (eg jogging, swimming, etc) or relaxation and meditation can help counteract stress. One doesn’t need to resort to masturbation as a stress reliever when there exists “safer” alternatives in my view (eg see stress.about.com/od/tensiontamers/a/stressrelievers.htm) quote:
ORIGINAL: DaveW But what do you say to a 13 or 14 year old for whom marriage is not an option for about another decade? Do you realistically expect them to "contain" for that long? Thru the years of peak testosterone levels and peak drive? I am tempted to say, “Yes! I did!” since I only began masturbating 4 years ago now at the “ripe old age” of 27 years. So my teenage years were totally absent of masturbation. However, I understand and appreciate that we are all created with different strengths and weaknesses so one may find their sexuality more of a challenge to discipline while another may find their anger more challenging to master. Having said that I feel that our Western culture is partly to blame for the host of problems that result from sexual experimentation, especially in the teenage years like unwanted pregnancies, abortion, STDs, failed relationships, etc. For instance, history reveals that in various cultures, notably the Israelite and Judean cultures of the Bible, boys were considered men around 12 years of age (eg Jesus left his parents at this age “to be about [his] father’s business” Luke 2:49). Even in later eras, and in America during some frontier situations particularly, marriages were often contracted in the early teens--yet, in such cases the guys were experienced and working men, while the girls trained and capable women. Of course it must be said that though physical maturity is key, of more importance is the maturity of faith and character and it was the Judeo-Christian religion--of which culture is an extension of--on which American society was originally based that undeniably contributed to the progress of marriage, family life and civilization. Since the end of the Second World War, however, I believe the Biblical mores of the nation have slowly eroded and been compromised by a growing plague of secularism and a humanist worldview that has increasingly crept into our institutions, academia and warped our national mind-set (eg see revisionistreview.blogspot.com/2007/07/british-thinktank-declares-children-are.html)
