lol! I think Isabel and Judah should be play mates! The last two days he has just been wild - he wants to stand at everything and try climbing up on everything... I'm sure he'll be walking soon!

Jess, what did you do about nursing while you were gone? How has Judah done going back to nursing?

ORIGINAL: SweetLittleErin Dumb question, I'm not pregnant yet, but trying, and I know I will have to work when I do have a baby, but I still want to breastfeed. So you can pump during the day but can you still nurse when you are at home in evening and weekends? I dont want to totally miss out on the nursing experience. How many times a day do you have to pump? I work at a very flexible office so it wouldnt be a problem, I just curiously thinking ahead. BTW...I lurk in here all the time, I love this thread! yes yes and yes. In fact...my sil had to use formula during the day while she was at work as she was one of the women who is unable to pump...but she nursed when at home in the evening and on her days off....baby did just fine. Your body adjusts to what you and baby demand of it.

Erin, I pump at work and nurse at home but she does get one bottle during the night when Micah is home. *I* never give her a bottle unless I absolutely must and that's only been about 4 times since she was born. Even when she was in the NICU Micah fed her all her bottles. You will want to get a good pump, I love my Pump in Style and I actually think it works better for me then the Medela Symphony which is a hospital grade pump.

It is a good idea to rent on if you can, until you find one that works for you.....

Erin, most babies very young eat every two hours or so, so you'll probably pump every two hours in the beginning. You can also do practice rounds at home while on maternity leave. Try pumping for a whole day while at home and see how things go, and if you and the baby are matching up. When you do go back to work you'll be able to tell how much the baby needs by what he/she does on your weekends. If you get engorged on the weekends, you can take it down a notch at work, or if you don't have enough, you can kick it up a notch at work. I worked three nights a week, and I was able to do it successfully as long as I was able to pump at work. It got to the point where I couldn't do it anymore because of scheduling and busy-ness, but if that doesn't happen to you and your always able to take your breaks, it should go well for you. And, as your baby gets older, she'll eat more in one sitting but less often, so then you'lll need to take less breaks in the day.

ORIGINAL: SweetLittleErin Thanks so much ladies for all the great advice on pumping and working! I dont feel quite so stressed about it now. I was worrying that working would automatically mean I couldnt feed breastmilk exclusively! I know my job would allow me to break and pump as often as needed, I am very blessed to work where I do. Now...just to get that baby on the way! I know you are probably tired of hearing this one...but it will happen when it is supposed to happen.....I know a couple who have been married nearly 15 years and just now, after 12 years of trying, are expecting their first baby....not saying that will happen with you...but don't stress it. It is all in God's hands...

Yeah for a new thread! Just wanted to throw in my working/pumping experience. I work 2 nights a week, 7p-7a. Addison only eats once while I'm gone, about 3 oz. She just plain prefers Mommy. She will eat enough to tide her over, but that's it. I only pump when I'm away from her, it just seems silly to give her a bottle when I know she eats better if I feed her. For the most part my co-workers are supportive, but I have gotten some weird looks/reactions when people find out I'm "still" nursing. Especially because we haven't started solids yet. And that leads me to a question. For those of you who started solids late, how did you know it was time to start? Did you start differently then you would've with a little baby? She's been nursing alot more lately (maybe 6x/day as opposed to 4x) and also waking occasionally at night. Funny girl, she only does that when I'm home. If Daddy's home with her, she sleeps all night. I don't know whether to contribute her increased nursing to traveling, teething, or hunger. Maybe it's everything! My little girl will be nine months old tomorrow! How did that happen ?

It worked pretty well, Christina. Our LC came out and saw us and gave me the right dosage. I actually stopped taking it before the 2 weeks were up because it worked so quickly. Now I'm just drinking 2 cups of Mother's Milk tea per day to help maintain everything. Looking back I think Gabby was having a growth spurt which just made my supply seem low.

ORIGINAL: ChelseaRae Is Reglan a med for increasing milk supply? I have a friend who is struggling with this right now, she is tube feeding as a supplement and seeing a LC regularly, how long do you have to be on it, is it as long as you are nursing or just until you get a good supply established? You are only supposed to do a max of 2- 2 week long courses of Reglan because it can cause severe PPD. I know in Canada they also Domperidone(Motilium?) to increase milk supply but I have no clue what the dosage for that is.

Be careful with Reglan, it can have some pretty serious side effects. My doctor put me on it to help me with my morning sickness last pregnancy, but it's only recommended for certain lengths of time.

Yea, post partum woman aren't supposed to use it for more then 2 weeks at a time, apparently our wonky hormones make us even more susceptible to the bad side effects.

Woo Hoo! Nathan only woke up once last night to nurse! He's been sleeping poorly ever since we got back from New York, waking up 3 times a night. He's getting better at getting himself back to sleep. I sometimes hear him cry for maybe 15 seconds at night, then drift back down. And when I do get up, I'll change his diaper and nurse, but not necessarily to sleep. I hope this means some better night's sleep in the future...

Hubby and I had our first date last night since the baby! Nannie babysat for us, and we went to a power date night at our church. It was a very good time, and I really enjoyed getting out for a little bit. Nannie said he was a good boy all night long. I pumped enough for two feedings even though we were only gone for about 4 hours. She only needed one of them though. Hubby and I decided we're going to go out alone together at least once a month. It takes a bit of extra work to pump enough for an evening, but I really don' t mind. I am feeling pretty good today. We have been having good nights the last couple of nights too. We had a growth spurt this week, at exactly 5 weeks old, and then that night he slept from 11:00pm to 4:45am...which is a pretty good stretch. I think I'm going to make it to my 6 week goal of breastfeeding, then I get to set another goal!
