ORIGINAL: SteelMagnolia Nicole, an easy way to track her diapers is to put all the used ones in the same place only for 24 hours, then count them at the end, then toss them. It's easier than trying to keep track in your sleep deprived state and remember where you kept your tally. LOL! I only did that for my first baby though. For your second, you'll be able to tell real easily if they're getting enough food. You ought to change her when she's poopy, but you don't have to change pee diapers at every feed, unless she starts to get a rash. Some babies need to be changed ALOT like mine. Sorry, forgot you have other babies too. If you think she's getting enough, just tell the doctors "I think about 12 a day". That's average. I didn't count with Jimmy because I knew how it felt for a baby to be getting enough already.

Now it's always full and my nipple perks perfectly. However, my right breast is flat, doensn't perk good, and doesn't seem to have as much milk. Should I pump a little on my left to help it 'change' into what my right breast is? Hmm. You may have flat nipples, and Jadon might just be too tiny to break the tendons holding them in. It couldn't hurt to give it fifteen minutes, lol. I have flat nipples and it made nursing a preemie difficult. Nate fixed 'em, though, once he was born.

Oh, I didn't see the part about flat nipples. A pump can helpt that for sure.....just put it on the strongest, fastest setting.

Not necessarily. I have pumped for 9.5 months and mine are still flat. And that is with pumping 6-8x/day for 9 months. Kris

Regarding extended nursing ... I don't have much of an issue with it if the child is 3 or even 4 .... but one gal I know still allows her 8 year old to nurse twice daily ... she gets 'milky' before and after school .... that's a bit much, IMO -- and more of a mom issue (especially since mom was widowed when said child was almost 4 ... I think she's using nursing as a way to still physically feel connected to her hubby)

Wow, 8 seems pretty old to me. My dad says he can remember in grade school in the 60's a lot of the poorer kids would go home at lunch to nurse.

I am sorry that lady lost her husband, though.

That was one benefit of pumping for me. I have flat/borderline inverted nipples. The pumping helped pull things out and make it easier for my babes to latch. --Kat

Now I know this is only the third day since my milk has come in, but how long does the engorgement usually last? I'm gonna have to try a different hold like the football hold on my right side. She will latch okay, but it is as if she empties only the left side of the breast. My upper/right side of the right breast is still very engorged and hard. My left breast seems to be adjusting fairly well.

I think it took about two weeks with my last one and my breasts took turns being extremely full and obnoxious. My engorgement may have lasted longer because I did pump some to relieve the pressure. I would do it again though, even if it prolongs the settling in process, because I cannot stand being in pain like that! Actually, I hope to pump quite a bit in the beginning with this one because I'll likely be having surgery sometime between 3 and 6 months and then I'll have breast milk on hand if we need to use it.

I have two manual Avent ones that the hospital gives out in the goody bags. I also have a friend who has a Medela electric pump that I know she will let me borrow if I need/want to. I'd just have to buy extra attachments. The only time I am able to pump is during that engorgement period, so I'll just get what I can then and be happy with that. I've also been told I can have the baby in the hospital with me as long as someone stays there to care for the baby so I don't have to. My scar from my previous surgery will be reopened from belly button to pubic bone, so I'm not anticipating an easy recovery. My OB has said they can make sure to only give me drugs that are nursing-friendly, just as they would a C-section mom. I am so blessed by a doctor who is willing to work with me in so many ways.

I am sorry that lady lost her husband, though. Personally...it depends on the child. As a rule...yea...8 is too old for me...but I knew a lady who had a retarded child who was mentally the age of a 1 year old...and she still nursed her. So while that is not the case in this scenario mentioned by Karaboo2, there are exceptions to the rule that 8 is too old....

We just had a major break through! I tried the football hold to nurse on the right side, and WOW we had the best feeding ever! Although our feeding took an hour to do because she would take a rest between eating periods, but I don't mind because she finally had a full complete feeding! And my right breast feels so good! I'm so proud of her!

I am so glad that the football hold helped on that side! One of my children required a different hold based on whichever side she was eating off of.....in her case it was due to a brace she had to wear due to hip dypslasia in both hips.

I have never been successful with the football hold. But then I'm not too coordinated with a football either.

I never could manage the football, either, with my 5 pounder or my 10 pounder. It just wasn't for me and MY big breasts, lol.

Football worked with my 4th son, but not with the next dd. She was a biter! After her "biting" my later nursing babies seemed easier. Go figure. Football is actually easy once you get used to the baby under the side of your belly instead of the weight resting on your tummy. Just practice a few times and it should get easier. But I suggest practicing while alone. It is just easier. Good luck.
