I never tried to mix breastmilk and formula but when I was ready to switch to whole milk my daughter flat out rejected it until I started mixing it with breastmilk. Only took about three 50/50 bottles, then 1 or 2 that were 25/75 and then she took whole milk fine. Had to do the same thing when I switched her to soy. Once again, worked like a charm. The only problem is that if you mix a bottle and he rejects it, then you have some wasted breastmilk

Thanks all! I tried the bottle tonight and he seemed to latch on OK (the other bottles he just rolled around and gummed and never really got on them) but once he tasted the formula he popped off. I'm going to see if my friend who just had a baby and is pumping 46oz/day and her kiddo is only taking 6-18 as a suppliment will part with some. Once I know how much I have to work with I can try mixing them. I have also been wondering if supplimenting a little at night will help him to sleep longer. He's a week shy of 4 months old and still usually wakes every 2 hours to eat. I'd like to extend that.

IME, formula vs breastmilk doesn't make a lick of difference in their sleep and neither does adding cereal. But I think some people have success with it, so hopefully Gideon will sleep longer. I'm sure you need it with Rob being gone.

David sleeps longer if his last bottle before bed is formula. Last night Chris gave him 8 oz of breastmilk before bed. He woke up at 3:30 needing to eat. I usually give him 6 oz of formula before bed and he sleeps until 7:30 or 8:00. He hasn't woken up at night like that in over 3 weeks. So for David, I think it does make a difference.

I don't think that the formula itself will help him to sleep longer (#1 was BF and slept great, #2 was eventually formula fed and slept even worse than this one) but because of my milk supply issues it could help simply to get him "fuller". KWIM? Sometimes I wonder if he just needs a little more than I have to offer. Also, the main reason why I want him to be able to take formula is for my volunteer babysitters. He did sleep a little better last night. I fed him at 11:30 when I went to bed, then 2:30 and 5:30 then he actually continued to sleep (he usually start cluster feeding about then). I actually got to get up and get a shower at 7:20 and he was still asleep. Yoohoo! Of course one somewhat decent night a pattern doesn't make but still, I'll take it. Now I need him to do that on a morning when I don't have to get up and get us out of the house but get to stay in bed and enjoy it.

I knew it wouldn't last. I fed him at 10 last night and put him down (we were out late). He was up at 12:40, 3, 5, and 7 and wanted to stay up at that point. When I woke the first time I still hadn't fallen asleep after going to bed myself. *sigh* I mean *snore*, I already need a nap.

I'd start with just pumping enough off to not hurt. That should decrease your supply. I'm sorry it's not working out for you.

Emily You've done so very well and given David such a good start, working so hard with all that pumping. Sorry that it's not working out any more, but hey, it's David's choice! I've read that putting cabbage leaves on your breasts, inside your bra, will help with engorgement and also have a drying-up effect.

Then keep pumping and mixing it with the formula. You can most likely start getting him more used to the breastmilk and up the ration of breastmilk:formula over the next week.

He has been drinking breast milk for 3 months now so I'm not sure why he suddenly started refusing it about 2 weeks ago.

Yeah, it's just a matter of getting him used to the taste again. If you really want to get him to drink more breastmilk, then you certainly can...

Emily, If he will take 2oz breast milk and 4oz formula, maybe he would take 2.5oz breast milk and 3.5oz formula for one day, and then 3oz / 3oz, then 4oz / 2oz, and so on, if you see what I mean, ie gradually increasing the mix.

I have an issue, and I thought maybe this would be the best place for it. I recently had a baby, 7 weeks ago today actually! From the beginning, my dh and I said that we would do both bottle and breast feed. When we're at home I breast feed mostly. (Sometime dh will give her a bottle, it makes him feel like he's doing something..lol) But when we're out and about we use a bottle. Well, my MIL is all for bf. She has recently asked a friend of mine to talk to me, because she thinks that I need to be bfing even when we're out. My dh works two jobs right now, so I take care of things at home. I also have my pregnant sister living with us. (Her husband is in Irag right now). I have a lot to accomplish in the day. Plus, I just picked back up on a part time job to help out. Now, my issue: what makes it my mil's business to go to my friends and try to get me to bf regardless where I am? She knows from the past that I tend to stand with my decisions, so now she's taken to talking with people who influence me. Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of thing? I don't plan on changing my mind. I'm just frustrated that she would do this.

Have you asked your husband to talk to his mother? Sometimes MIL's will listen to their sons when they seem to be deaf to the DIL's. Otherwise you'll just have to stick to your guns and ignore the annoying lady in the corner. BTW, this isn't going to end with BFing. MIL's of this nature will butt in whenever and however they can, so be very firm, and hopefully your husband will support you in setting up proper boundaries with his mother.

Yup. My MIL liked to offer her opinions on my breastfeeding(or lack thereof) and DH finally just told her "we are making the decision that is best for our family, and there will be no more talk of it from here on out". She never mentioned it again...

I agree. Ruth and Ryanne both said it well. What business is it of your MILs? None. She has a right to her opinion, but your and your hubby's decision as to how you are going to raise and care for your child trumps her opinions. I really like the way Ryanne's husband explained it to his mother. Very well said.

Thank you so much ladies! I kept telling myself last night that if she was to bring it up, the only thing I would say to her would be "SHUT UP!"...so it's a good thing she never said it to me directly. My DH has on many occasions stepped up and told his mom that we're the ones making decisions. That's why she went to a friend of mine this time. Thankfully, my friend hasn't said anything to me yet. Of course I haven't seen her since the incident, but nonetheless. Thanks again ladies!
