Went running today, I put too many layers on so I got so hot by the end but it was still not too bad. I think I am getting a cold. I woke up this morning with a sore throat so I've been taking tons of vitamin c and other nutrients to hopefully, stave off the cold. It's horrible because Christmas is right around the corner, the family is here a big gathering and I'm coming down with something!!

Sorry about the cold. Good Job on your race. I can join the run club in January since that's when the membership dues are due for the year and will meet up with them when I improve my endurance. Didn't get running stuff for christmas, but I'd rather pick that stuff out myself. Since I have repeatedly asked for yoga clothes and gotten other things. They have no idea.

Yes, congrats on the face phosadaud! I will probably not run for a while. The cold turned into a cough so I know I definitely won't have the lung capacity to run.LOL.

What about brisk walking a half marathon. If you've been out of working out for about 8 months and want to participate in May... What are my chancses of reconditioning my muscles in time for a half marathon on May 2?

You probably have enough time, look up a walking half marathon plan though to make sure. I'd start walking 3 days a week now though to start. I am going to start slowly increasing my time running next week, so there will be a short run, a medium run and a long run.. then maybe start speedwork like a regular running plan. I am going to the gym later, the resolutions crowd will show up this week, LOL

Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth. My grandfather passed away on Christmas, so I was out of town for several days. Still trying to catch up! I was able to run while I was gone. Kinda fun running in my home town. Running down familiar streets, looking at what had changed and how much stays the same...

sorry to hear about your grandfather. I have made the mistake of going to Target and other stores day after Christmas, it's good for markdowns but you really have to pick through a lot , my size is usually not there. Plus with bringing out the spring stuff I don't want any clothes for christmas anymore.. too much of a hassle to return a now 75% off sweater. Plus the seasonal department looks like a wreck and people are just grabbing the last snowman and nearly fighting over it . My gym's 24 hours, so it will probably be crowded in the evenings for a few weeks, but at least it's got plenty of treadmills, I have noticed a lot of people prefer the ellipticals more.

ORIGINAL: stellaluna But I did pick up a really cool scale at Target. It's made by Weight Watchers and it's supposed to show your weight, body fat, bone mass and a bunch of other stuff. My husband has begun MMA training again and we both want to lose a few pounds and trim up; I think the scale will be a good incentive. I have that scale. My BF% according to the scale is higher than the measurement from the gym. But it is still a valuable tool to follow trends.

Any of you guys get black toenails? A couple of weeks ago a runner I work with asked me if my toenails had turned black yet. She said most runners she knows have lost toenails; she hasn't lost any, but she's had a couple turn black. I was afraid that was just something I had to look forward to, perhaps after my mileage gets a little higher. I've been paying close attention to my feet and my toes are no where near the end of my shoe, so I've been wondering how in the heck they'd turn black anyway (and wondering if it was some poor circulation thing runners are prone to). Well...I was perusing Runner's World tonight and ran across a doctor column that mentions black toenails. The doctor says they turn black because the shoe is too tight (short). Like I said, my toes are no where near the ends of my shoes, so they don't bump or anything. I'm hoping to avoid this black toenail scourge. And now I'm wondering if all these runners here are getting black toenails--or losing them--because there is no runner's store to fit them properly in shoes.

I'm probably only one of many people who have made a New Year's resolution to run. I've been going to the gym pretty regularly for about a year now so I'm not going from couch to marathon . I found a running training program for beginners designed for a treadmill. It builds slowly over 8 weeks and at the end you should be able to run 2.25 miles. Then I will begin training for a 5K that is scheduled for mid April. I have a couple questions. Today I did day one of the training which is walk for 30 minutes at a 2% incline. I was surprised how hard it was as I regularly do 3-5 miles on the eliptical with less perceived exertion. Can anyone explain this? Secondly, how to I figure out what pace to set the treadmill at?

I have a Tanita body fat scale, it's almost the same measurement as the gym gave me. I start the incline at 1 and then raise it each week or two weeks til I get til 2%, then I don't need a higher incline til I start doing speedwork (not a lot of hills here), i know when the trainer gave me a cardio test at 5% I felt like I was going to die. As for speed, it varies for person, personally my speed for running is extremely slow between 3.7 and 4.3 mph, and I raise that slowly as well. I run for 30 minutes w/o stopping right now. Outside I run about an 11:30 to 12 something mph. Walking is whatever brisk pace I can sustain for 30-60 minutes , usually between 3.0 mph and 3-7 mph (short legs, short stride, lol) I also use a HRM monitor so I make sure I am walking fast enough and long enough. No black toenails, it would gross me out if it fell off. Yuck. It's harder to walk on a treadmill because the elliptical assists you with the movement and on a treadmill you have less of that assist. It's also harder to walk outside because you don't have the mechanical assist of the treadmill as well, so if you are going to race outside, you'll want to try a few walks / runs outside so you can get used to it.

Black toenails are from shoes that are too small. Generally you will want to get running shoes that are 1/2 to a full size larger than regualr shoes. Go to a running store to get a good fit. It will be more expensive than going to big-box-mart, but certanily cheaper than PT for injuries from running in the wrong shoes! I did a 2200 swim then a 23mile ride this morning. Felt good to get in a decent workout!

I do the walk at 3.8 or 3.9 (my walk yesterday was 1.92 miles in 30 minutes) If I set it to 4.0 in order to keep pace, my stride seems unatural. Another question -- do you do any strength training as well?

Found out I needed a narroy which you can't get at the discount shoe stores. Pricey but worth the money.

The problem is that stella doesn't live near a running store, so that is why she is having problems finding shoes. I'm glad they run smaller, I wear a 4.5 womens dress shoe and 5 regular sneaker, or else I wouldn't be able to buy running shoes. I run at 4.0 mph, so yes the stride is unnatural for me, since I don't want to learn how to speedwalk. ran almost 3 miles today, that was an accident, it was really cold out so I pretty much ran the whole way, if it was warmer than I would have walked the extra 10 minutes. Strength training, i haven't done any lately , but am going to add it back in, once I see how crowded the weight room is this week.. when everybody starts their diet. But I do yoga and there is some strength involved in it as well.

Well, it's been a week since I ran but I've been keeping up with doing weights at least. I walked last night for an hour at 4.0 mph with a 4.0-4.5 incline and it felt good to at least do something. I can't wait until I can run again.
