I finished the 5K St Patrick's Day Foot Race and beat my goal and personal best.

Congratulations on the race, that's a great time!

Last week I prolonged my run to about 4 miles and the 3 times I've been running it, it takes me at least 45 minutes! So I'll stay at this level a while I think

I look forward to my run tomorrow, I'm housesitting for my parents and they live outside the city and it's such a different experience from running in the city - even though there's lakes and parks!
Plus it's been snowing these last couple of days and I love love love running in the snow

They're talking about snow tonight. I'm still feeling a little icky, but I wanted to do at least something so I ran a very slow mile this morning. I think it actually helped a little.

I recently found this Thread, and I'm so glad that I did. I have to agree with everyone who has spoken favorably about the "Couch 2 5K" program. It's the one that my wife and I got involved with last year. A young couple at our church, one of whom grew up there but moved away for a number of years, decided they wanted to start a running/walking group. It's purpose, ostensibly, was to get together as a group and train to enter a 5K Run/2-mile Walk over the July 4th weekend here in Charleston. But the underlying motive was attempt to get our unchurched/unsaved friends involved, so that the Gospel could be shared with them. That part didn't yield the results we'd hoped for, but a number of the folks from church joined and we did have a lot of fun.

We began meeting at a local middle school every Tuesday evening, unless it was pouring down the rain, for a group run/walk. Then, on our own we would follow the training schedule throughout the rest of the week. On June 29th, after 12 weeks of work, we entered the Charleston Independence Day 5K Run/2-mile Fun Walk. I finished 4th among all of the men in a time of 28:42, which wasn't bad for my first time ever in a race. The next day, my spiritual mentor and I went to play golf (It was his son, BTW, who got the group started in the first place) and we talked about the future. He told me that if I kept up my training and my weight loss, it wouldn't be out of the question for me to run in the Charleston Distance Run 5K in September of last year. I told him that I might try for it in 2008, but not in '07. All through our round of golf, however, I kept thinking about what he'd said. I also thought about it overnight, and the next morning I spoke to his son, Matt. I said, "Matt, I'm probably going to regret this, but I'd like to try and run in the Distance Run 5K this year." He got this huge grin on his face, then he told me that on Tuesday evening he would have a schedule for me.

The only problem that I found with his schedule was that I only had 9 weeks to train - instead of the 12 weeks for the previous race. I got into it, however, and on Sept. 1st I ran my very first 5K. It is held in conjunction with the Charleston Distance Run, which is a nationally known 15-mile race through the city. I finished close to the rear of the pack in a time of 45:28:25 - but I finished! I was so ecstatic afterwards that I cried! And I also cried when I saw Mary come walking across the line. I know now that this was not my last race, although it was my last one for the year. I'd planned on entering a local "Turkey Trot," but I tweaked my hamstrings and quadriceps during a run on a Saturday afternnon in October, and haven't been able to do any kind of training since. Things have finally gotten back to normal with my legs now, so I'm going to do a light run this evening after work - maybe a mile or so. Right now, I'm just trying to get loosened up because our 2nd season begins on April 15th, and I'm getting stoked!

Blessed running to all of you!

Duane

Oh, BTW, there were two items that I neglected to mention in my previous Post. At the time of the 5K, I was 2 months shy of my 49th birthday and I weighed in at a "svelte" 290 pounds. So I guess that makes what the Lord did that day just a little bit more amazing.

Hi, Duane, nice to meet you and welcome to our humble thread.

Here's the deal about my leg...I ran for a couple of minutes Monday, which caused the initial pain I had way back when to flare up again. Just in time for my doctor appointment yesterday. It was even sore when I was at the doc's office and we talked about it and he manipulated my legs and watched me walk again and a bunch of stuff and declared that one month of rehab simply isn't enough. He didn't clear me to run. I have to continue my PT and cross training for one more month, then he says I can begin jogging again, at a slow pace and for brief periods of time.

On the bright side...both my legs are the same length.

bummer

the wind and the rain has been getting on my nerves. Hopefully the gym rush will be gone so it won't be so crowded.

So sorry to hear that Stellaluna. Praying that you get the ok soon!

I haven't been running because I caught the bug that everyone and their sister has around here... I'm hardly ever sick... Which is a good thing, because I REALLY don't like being sick...

Ack, that's not good. Hopefully you'll get over it soon. Oh, and welcome to the thread Duane!

Stellaluna,

You're lucky. My left leg is slightly shorter than my right and it's very annoying. What's funny is my left foot is slightly bigger than my right.

My mom has one leg that is about a full inch shorter than the other and it does cause her problems. I've never measured my legs (or had them measured) but if one is longer than the other, it doesn't bother me...

I'm willing to bet one of my legs is longer than the other, just not sure which. Probably that bothersome LEFT one!!

I haven't had any problems running it's just a tad bit shorter. One day, I noticed my pant leg on the left leg falls farther down then the right and thought to myself, "huh, I have one leg shorter than the other!"

I read recently a blog or something by a sports doctor who was talking about leg length differences. He said a quarter inch difference can make a runner more prone to pain and injury. But he also said an insert of just 1/8 inch can fix the problem. So...I guess that would be something to try if you know you have one leg shorter and you have a lot of problems with it.

Well, as I am feeling better (not 100% but getting there) and I haven't worked out in about a week, I decided to do a very light workout this morning and try not to push it. Boy, could I tell I hadn't done anything for a while... But it was good and I did better than I thought.

That's great to hear, Kristin. It's always a struggle to get going again after a period of inactivity. I'm facing the same thing, but I'll be doing a little something tomorrow evening after I attend a funeral.

Blessings,

Duane

Went running today. It was in the mid 70s today, wow it was hot! I was so hungry I ate a bit of food before I went and my run was fine until I ran about 2.3 miles and then I felt so queasy to my stomach, like I was going to throw up right there. I was horrified as it was near a light and people sitting in their cars and I thought to myself, "Oh no, please don't let me humiliate myself right here!". I shouldn't have ate anything because I almost got sick right there in public.LOL. I walked half a mile, until my stomach calmed down, and then ran again for a bit.

Eating is always so hard to judge. Eat a little too much to close to the run and you get queasy. Don't eat enough and you get queasy too...

I ran 1.5 miles today like yesterday and just took it slow. It's going to take some time to get back to those 3 mile runs I think...

I know! I was soo hungry that I knew I had to eat something. I've run on a very empty stomach before and I remember that run was horrible. Unfortunately, I think because I was so hungry, I ate more than I should have (You know how that goes.lol). And it didn't hit me until I had almost finished my run and then, Wham! I was ready to puke everywhere.

That's the bad thing about getting sick, or having anything interrupt your running schedule. Once you stop, you have to work your way back all over again.

Yep... I can't complain, this is the first time over a year I've had my running schedule thrown for a loop... Man, can I feel it though!

I know the feeling, that's why I try to keep running even if I feel like I don't. Usually, that feeling is all "mental". Running is all mental you know! Since January I've been running only once or twice a week, I hate running in cold weather. So now that it's getting warmer, I can start running 4-5 times a week again.

Totally mental! That's why I set goals - I can push myself a lot harder (ok, I've run 2.5 miles, what's another 1/2 mile )

Before you know it, you're logging in 10 miles.lol. Okay, maybe not that much. The most I've ever run at a time was 5 miles.

I think 3 miles is just fine for me! At this point, I think I will work more on my time and mixing things up rather than adding distance. I need to get my bike tires fixed because I'd love to start cycling again. There are some great trails around here!

I'm also not that sadistic either. 5 miles is my max, although I usually run 3-3.5 miles at the most. 5 miles are those rare occasions where I feel like wanting to run that much. cycling is great way to build leg muscles.

Yep! I just have to remember to not start too hard... Last time I did that, I couldn't sit for a few days...
