boston marathon is today

I like lance armstrong, I think he'll do good. He is running for charity.

It amazes me how fast the top runners are..

I survived my run on Thursday evening. I actually didn't feel as sore as on Tuesday, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, the weather conspired against me on Saturday and I didn't get my third workout in. Got up and went to Men's Prayer Meeting, then took care of some things around my Mom's house as well as got some groceries for my f-i-l. Then, my mentor and I drove to a nearby city to hit a running/walking shop for some new shoes. After trying on several pairs, I ended up buying some New Balance 858's. One thing I learned about my feet is that even though I might wear a D-width shoe in regular shoes, as far as athletic shoes goes I need to move up to a EE-width. It helps to keep my foot from sticking out over the sides, which aids in the stability area to boot. Anyway, as we were leaving the shop, the drizzle that had been steady all morning became a shower, and by the time we reached home, it was a steady rain. I thought I'd wait and see if it would slack off, but it never did; in fact, we had some hard showers a couple of times. And I wanted to go out yesterday afternoon, but accidentally fell asleep after eating lunch and woke up too late to do anything before going to church except a 15-minute walk - which is really better than nothing at all, right?

It's ten days before I'm cleared to run again...WOOHOO!!! I'm glad to see all you guys are keeping up your training.

Now, is it just me, or does it seem like there are suddenly a lot more runners? In the past month, I've talked to half a dozen friends who say they're running now. A couple of them I know I influenced, but the rest I haven't seen in forever and it's just come up in conversation. Two of them are in training for this year's White Rock marathon! It's so weird.

Not sure. I think it's spring fever since everyone hit the outdoors and said they are going to get their bikes out, etc, but it might be one of things were people go all out for a few weeks. But on the runnersworld forums they have tons of threads complaining about how marathoning isn't an elite sport anymore so yes running is in for now.

Yeah, the two girls I know training for White Rock have never run at all. One of them thought running a marathon "sounded fun" and she talked the other one into it. The one I was talking to went out walking two days in a row, then tried to run three miles the third day and couldn't figure out why she couldn't do it. She also figures now that she can probably do her marathon training in about four months, so she technically has until the end of August to start training. I advised her against it.

There's a lot of talk lately about ultramarathon among long-time runners...that's probably why.

well my brother in law ran a 10k (barely) and then signed up for a marathon so we'll see how it goes. At least he put a year into it.

When's the marathon? My goal is two 5Ks and a 10K in 2008...a half-marathon and marathon in 2009.

That should be plenty of time for him, especially since he's been running awhile.

(Did you see Spirit of the Marathon? Did I ask that before?)

I know at least one person who started running after watching me lose 30+ pounds and trim up with my running.

I ran 3 miles today - not very fast, but I keep plugging away. I also tied my personal best for pushups in a row this morning.

2 miles yesterday. 3 miles today. Still slow, but at least I'm plugging away. I did get a new personal best on my pushups this morning though!

Good. I will try to run tonight. Took the bike out for 20 minutes so I can start getting used to it. Did okay. Gotta get used to the seat. Ouch.

Tuesday's group workout went pretty good for me. I managed to keep a decent pace for my intervals (90 sec. runs/2 min. walks), but it was a bit of a struggle near the end. My feet were hurting, despite using the new shoes (New Balance 868's) that I bought Saturday. However, I found out something interesting last night, which was good news for my feet and legs.

The junior high track where we meet is an asphalt track, but a nearby high school has a cushioned track surface just like the ones at most university or college tracks. I couldn't believe it when I had the news confirmed by a couple from church. They live in the zone which attends this particular school. I graduated from one of that school's biggest rivals, which is going to be very weird for me to go there to run. But anything to take some of the pounding off of my feet, right?

Definitely try the better track. A lot of our tracks are locked because they are part of the football stadium. Plus it's track season now so I don't know if they are in use on the weekend.

ran 30 minutes

We had a rubberized track at my former junior high school. It was HEAVEN!

I did try the rubberized track yesterday evening, although I almost turned around and left. I got my first glance at it and thought that it was asphalt - it was a black surface! But when I got close enough to realize that it was a rubber track, I walked on through the gate and got busy. The weather was really nice (middle 70's, w/no humidity), and the track felt so-o-o- good on my bones. I thoroughly enjoyed doing my intervals on it. When I picked up my wife and my f-i-l from his physical & occupational therapy (he's had two strokes - 1 major), Mary asked me if I thought that he might enjoy walking on it. I said that he certainly would, due to it's cushioning effect, so some evening when I don't have to do any sort of training, the three of us will drive over there and I'll get out there with him while Mary does some walking on her own.

I've got one more session this week, so I hope that the harder rain holds off tomorrow; I'll run in a drizzle, but not a downpour.

All of our high school tracks are rubber and all are open to the public. (I was running on one when I hurt my leg and now I'm skeert of them. )

I've seen a lot of runners in the neighborhood the past week or so since the weather got really warm. They're all running really slow, so it must be the first runs of the season.

I think people here must be lazy. I thought it was awesome to run in the cold, but I never saw another person. Now you can't hardly go a block without seeing a runner, but they're barely moving. Wussies.

I was talking exercise with a police officer I know a while back and he asked me if I had a treadmill for the bad weather days. I told him no, but I was excited because this winter I had bought some shoe grips so even when it was snowy and icy I could still run. He looked at me like I had completely lost my mind (this is a man mind you who takes 30-40 mile bike rides) and that's when I knew that I had truly become a "real" runner.

Well, another slow 3 miles today. It was pretty brisk this morning, but it should warm up a lot today so I'm glad I didn't wait until later today for my run.

I'm still slow. I started increasing my distance and I didn't get any faster.. oh well I don't care.

But I guess if I ran a marathon I'd be good at staying at the same pace.

Its windy and cooler here so I will go out in a little bit.. then I have to go to the hardware store to get a wrench so I can put the water bottle holder on my bike.

I'm still slower than I was before getting sick. I'm getting kind of frustrated because I wasn't that sick, but it just seems like I'm not getting back to where I was...

I think pacing is important. I'd rather run a slow, consistant pace, than run in bits and spurts then die at the end. My pace was too fast in my last 5K race and the by the end, I wasn't sure whether I would pass out or throw up as I approached the finish line. I made it, but man did I feel awful!

Besides, I have to confess to taking secret enjoyment in passing those folks who started out too fast and died at the end...

It amuses me at the gym. The last time I thought the guy was really going to fall off the back of the treadmill.

I want to save for a garmin but it looks like they have separate ones for biking and running! I want one that does both. Maybe a 3rd party one does (not polar or garmin)

I'd probably need it more for biking.. at least I can run in a straight line and turn around than to bike around in circles forever in a park.. since I have no sense of direction!

we did that once at a park. we walked.. forgot where we parked.. think we walked the whole 8 miles .. we were exhausted.

I wonder why the ones for biking & running are different (or if they are different)? I guess I just assumed with the way they work, it should work either way.
