I think if I was your stomach, I'd be cramping, too!

I just finished two miles and I feel 500% better than I did Wednesday. I'm so glad! I'm still suffering from a case of shin splints, but my husband has been giving me massages and it's really making a huge difference. I ran a little slow tonight, but I'm pleased. We ran a bunch of errands this afternoon, though, and I missed my chance for a nice long bike ride. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm still trying to decide what I'll do tomorrow. There is a fun run where I could run a 5K or I could take a long bike ride. Guess we'll see if I can crawl out of bed early enough to make it to the run. If not, I'll take the bike for a spin.

Yeah, that's the same for me. THe getting up at 5 to make it to the front of the line just doesn't motivate me. I like my sleep too much. I vote for the long bike ride!

Hey, do you guys think that maybe spicy food is what caused my cramps??? LOL. My friends and I went to an east Indian Buffet restaurant, and I ate tonnes. I mean, literally tonnes. LOL. I don't like buffet because I tend to over eat in them. But this is the first time I had east Indian food and I actually liked everything, hence, the overeating, hence the cramp. I'll never ever do that again. Man the cramps really hurt. But it's gone now. I took a nap, then played ball with my daughter and it disappeared. My daughter kicked my butt in basketball. She's only 11.

Well, some foods certainly do a number on my tummy so it's certainly a possibility!

Whew! I ended up doing the 5K run and it was the toughest one yet. Everyone was struggling! The entire first mile plus was uphill... And it wasn't a little hill... I am very proud of myself though because even though my first mile was really slow, unlike many folks, I was able to keep running and not walk. Of course, I felt like I was dying, but....

Anyway, the second mile or so was mostly downhill. Usually that would make me happy, but the grade was steep enough in spots that you had to slow down to avoid killing your knees. The last mile or so was flat. Of course, by then, everyone was so exhausted that we were all really struggling. We felt bad for the 10K folks because they had to run the hill again...

I don't think anyone got super times, but I still eeked out around a 29:15ish 5K so I thought that was pretty decent for how hard the run was. I'll find out my official time later when they post the times online.

Now I'm ready to crash...

Sub-30 on that terrain sounds awesome to me! Good job!

I'm thinking about hiring out my husband for sports massage. He's been massaging my lower legs every day and they've never felt better! It's part of my therapy after being plagued with injury in my left leg and now shin splints: ice, stretching, THE STICK and now massage. The problem is pretty much taken care of. Woohoo!

Also, he's using peanut oil, which I read had analgesic properties. I don't know if it does, but I don't figure it can hurt at all.

Yayyyy! That's awesome! Hope you had a big supper or a tub of ice cream afterwards!

I hate downhill runs too. It kills my knees.

Thursday evening's run went pretty well. I went to the local high school that has the rubberized track surface, just to give my joints a bit of a break, and was totally surprised when it turned out to be kinda hard to run. I'm not sure if it was the track or it's location, which is near both an asphalt and a concrete plant. It's probably the latter. Oh well, today is gonna be better. I didn't run yesterday, just walked downtown during a local festival and mowed the yard, but still put 5.45 miles on my pedometer. I'll do my run this afternoon.

Ouch! I hurt today! At least today is my bicycling day... We'll see how far I make it though! I'm pretty stiff and sore today!

It was a rubberized track that caused my injury back in January. I thought I'd get a break as well, plus I wanted to time myself on a mile and know it was a mile. Nope, major pain and two months off from running.

OUCH! That had to be rough, Stella. I'm not going to make a habit of it. In fact, I think I'll probably go to the cemetery and run this afternoon, just get the feel of doing my 5K.

I'm still tempted by the tracks here, but scared to run on them now. I'll stick to concrete, asphalt and the occasional grassy stretch.

I love rubberized tracks although there aren't any within a runs distance of my house and I'm not going to drive somewhere just to run... But I'd be afraid to run on grass because it's uneven and I'd be afraid of twisting my ankle...

Yeah, I'm careful about grass, but I'm lucky enough to live a few blocks from a large park that has glorious stretches of even grassy areas. I wouldn't run through yards or any place I wasn't familiar with. Even if they were tempting.

Well, so much for a Sunday afternoon run. A line of thunderstorms came through and deposited about an inch of rain in nothing flat, along with some hail in places. The hail ranged in size from marble-sized to golf ball-sized, and some people actually had to break out their snow shovels to get it off their sidewalks and decks! I wasn't about to risk getting caught out in another one of those, so I just skipped it. I hope that I'm able to get all 3 days of training in this week, because my race is a week from Thursday. I am getting so psyched up right now that I can hardly stand it!!!

OK, Duane. Slow down, take a couple of deep breaths, and swallow your pills. You'll be just fine in a few minutes.

Isn't that frustrating? You're all pumped up and ready to go then you can't...

I took today off. I'm in pain... I think I should have taken a lighter bike ride yesterday. I was sore from Saturday's run and I think I overdid it on my bike ride yesterday... Now, I'm limping around like an old lady...

Norny--What has your training been like up to now? What is the distance you'll be running in cross country?

Kristin--Are you feeling any better?

I did a little over a mile last night just to kick start some mileage for the week. (I was supposed to run tonight, but I have to work late and won't be able to run.) Anyway, I did an 11:30 pace, which is my fastest since before my injury and it felt awesome!!! I was so stoked when I got done. Totally made up for that terrible day I had last week.

Norny, how many weeks do you have until your 5K? I'm in the home stretch (9 days) until mine, and I've been following a program for the last 10 weeks. I can have my group leader/trainer revise the one that we've been using or give you the website where we got ours in the first place. Let me know wither in here or by PM. And, btw, welcome to our little circle!

Still slightly sore, but better than yesterday! I'm thinking I should have shortened my bike ride on Sunday... I ran 1.5 miles today. I felt like I could have gone further, but thought I'd better take it easy! My right leg was really bothering me on Monday.

Great job on your run! It's so frustrating to have to "start over" in running after illness or injury, but it feels great to start to get back in the groove!

---------
Welcome Norny! My advice is to mix it up and don't get stuck in a routine of the same route, the same distance, etc. Your muscles will get used to one thing and when you try to run something different, your muscles will protest! Also, make sure you are resting when you need to and add some weight lifting a few days a week - and don't just work your legs. You need to work your other muscles as well - especially your core muscles!

Last night's run was a really, really good one for me. My program called for 2.5 miles, so I got to the track a bit early to warmup, then ran 1/2 mile before everyone else showed up. After our prayer, I started out again, just going along at (what I thought was) a leisurely pace. My group leader came alongside of me and stayed with me for 3 laps. At one point, he asked me if I knew what my pace was. I said that I had no idea, and he told me "You're running a 12:15 right now." I almost had a coronary! Me?! A 12:15 mile pace?! That's faster than I did my walking race last year (24:48 for 2 mi.) My body was screaming "Slow down!," while my spirit was shouting "Don't you dare slow down!!!" I listened to my spirit and kept the pace up; in fact, I rounded the last turn and kicked my way to the finish line! Talk about elation! And Matt was just grinning all over himself as he ran with me. I'm almost assured of that sub-40:00 time that I'm looking for next Thursday evening! Thank You, Lord, for being so good to me in my efforts!

Duane
