Snow already! I don't think it's cold enough here for snow, still only 40s and 50s during the day. But you're right, running when it's snowing is great, it is so pretty and the run ends up not being as bad because you get so distracted by the falling snow! Or at least, that's how it is with me. I will probably head out to run soon before it gets dark, since the sun sets at around 4:45 now.

Stellaluna...How did those shoes work out? Maybe you're STILL running in them because they were so comfy?

Good for all you going out and running in this cold; I don't know how you do that..I'm a big wimp. The last two days of running have been not good at all for me. I have had NO energy. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!

I think of it this way. I freeze my booty the first 5-10 minutes and while I'm freezing I think, "Why am I out here for!? I could be in a nice warm house!" LOL. But I know that mid-way into my run I am warmed up and the cold doesn't feel bad at all. That's how I motivate myself to go out in the cold, I tell myself that being cold doesn't last very long before I warm up.

One good thing about the winter, you can ramp up the intensity without dying from the heat like in the summer so you can run for longer and a higher intensity without endangering yourself (as long as you have layered yourself with enough clothes).

See i am not that way, I know that I will warm up but I complain to myself those first 5 to ten minutes. LOL

Snowed today so I went to the gym because I was 90% sure the bike path wasn't cleared off and I didn't want to slip on some ice.

28 min straight run with my hair in my eyes. I guess I am going to have to get a hair cut this week.

You're right, you are WEIRD!

I'm with Miss Giggles, I call myself all kinds of stupid for going out when it's soooo cold the first 5-10 minutes.LOL. It is very dark and rainy out right now and though the temp is 45 or so, with the wind chill it's like 25! Yikes! So, I will be running on the treadmill tonight where it's nice and warm inside.

You should buy a headband. I bought a Nike sport elastic headband and it works wonders to keep stray hairs off my forehead and face. I always get annoyed when I have one or two hairs falling in my face.

I did , and it flew off my head (the underarmour mini headbands). But I have a dri fit hat I can wear too.

But really I do need a haircut. I have to wear bangs and they are too long.

Snow would have been welcome. Yesterday we got wind and rain...sideways rain. So I took my new shoes to the gym. Ran 1:00/walked 1:00 on the treadmill for 30 minutes. The shoes are great!

However, I think my left leg doesn't work the same as my right leg. My right leg I think could run a marathon right now with no pain. My left leg hurts--I get pain in my achilles tendon, ankle, shins, knee. I'm positive there's something wrong with my gait, but I don't know what it is.

My left leg cramped the first 3 or 4 weeks but now its fine. Weird.

Hmm...maybe your left leg is a bit shorter or longer than your right. I know my left leg is a bit shorter, with my left foot a big bigger. I haven't had any problems with my knees or ankles, and no groin injuries (also common in runners) thank God! I've been lucky I think. Nothing major except your usual muscle aches and sores due to upping the intensity and things like that.

I ran on the treadmill tonight and it was alright. I ran for 36 minutes and went 4 miles and then cooled down for 10 minutes.

Stellaluna, I'm glad you like your shoes. I never wear my new running shoes outside until I make sure they are ok.

rnershigh, my left foot is bigger than my right too. Once I made the mistake of buying a pair of summer shoes after only trying it on my right foot; I got home and my heel was hanging off the back of the left!

Sometimes I'll have pain on just one side too. Mine (I think) is from something getting a little out of place in my back or hip. I don't have a good answer for what to do; I just run through it and hope it goes away... For me personally, if I stopped running whenever I had pain, I would never run again because something ALWAYS is hurting on me! Sometimes a little extra stretching helps me, though. Have you had the pain all along, or did it just start with the new shoes?

Let's hear it for us people with mismatched feet!LOL. Actually, most people have one foot that is slightly bigger or smaller than the other. It does get annoying with some shoes I wear since my left toes get pinched more. I usually wear a size 8 (depends on the manufacturer), and Nike running shoes are usually very uncomfortable for me to wear since they make their shoes more narrow than most. And I noticed this when I was running last night.

I have another pair of running shoes, addidas, and I ran in them last night and they were so nice and roomy and comfortable. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought the Nike shoes I currently wear to run outside, I forget why, but now I know why I stopped wearing Nike. You'd think I have learned something the first time around!LOL

Anyways, I slept like the dead last night. I went running too late last night, but at least it helped me sleep like a log. Today it is soo windy out and you'd have to be crazy to want to run in weather like this. I can deal with wind, but these gusts are huge.

I forgot to add: What kind of weighlifting exercises does everyone do to supplement their running? Just curious as to what everyone finds works for them.

I usually just use 10lb free weights to do bicep curls, triceps, and deltoids and upper back muscles. Then I use 5-6 lb free weights to do lunges to work my quads, hamstrings, and glutes and calf raises to work my calf muscles (of course, I incorporate hills in my runs to get leg workout too). I really hate working my abdominals (I know I should do those, work the core muscles), but I hate doing my abs. I think that is the only area I don't concentrate much on.

I don't worry about bulking up with muscle, being a woman it is near impossible, plus the fact running isn't conducive to getting bulky muscles. Which I don't mind, I like having the long/lean muscles from running.

Well, while I can relate to that whole mis-matched foot deal ya lost me on the "long, lean" muscles..I'm short and I used to lift very heavy weights...So my legs are basically a couple of tree trunks. lol Ok..maybe not that bad, but they have never been accused of being long!!!

For a loooong time I was supplementing my workouts with lunges,(again, I was using weights that were too heavy; I should have focused on lighter to just tone; live and learn) And I would do push-ups, curls, lat raises, etc.. BUT, lately my back is hurting all the time so much so that I can't even bear the thought of doing anything...So I've only been running. No energy. Also, I have stopped working my abs, so I'm feeling pretty flabby lately. Not good! How often do you do your weights, and do you do them right after your run? I always did mine afterwards, but was finding it was taking a lot of time. I run for a long time, yet if I said I would lift later I found later never came!!

Which reminds me of a question I wanted to ask: Do any of you ever go to a chiropractor? My back and neck are so messed up that I am considering it, but I wonder if all of my running would just make it "pop" right back out? I will not stop running, so if they say I need to do that I may as well not go.(I can be pretty stubborn and stupid..) Anyone have chiropractor experiences they would like to share?

I am doing yoga twice a week, I am trying to figure out if I need to do more strength exercises.

Calea, you can try doing core and yoga exercises , sometimes back pain is due to weak abdominal muscles or muscle imbalance. of course it if hurts to do the exercises, don't. Or consult with a physical therapist if possible

LOL. A couple of tree trunks huh? I'm not too short nor too tall, average height I guess between 5'5-5'6.

I do weight training 3 days a week, while I run 4 times a week. I used to run 5 times a week in the summer, but I can't get myself to go that extra day out in the cold and windy weather, so 4 it is. I also have a hard time convincing myself to do ab workouts, though I know it is very important to do abs and lower back muscles. I hate sit-ups, but I like doing scissors and leg raises. It really helps with posture and when you run (like Miss Giggles said, it's good to do them to help with back pain and prevent back injuries!). Luckily, I don't have back problems. I don't do the gym anymore, but when I did I used to lift weights after running, but now I do them on my off days.

I have never been to a chiropractor. The thought of someone cracking and pulling at my neck and joints doesn't sound appealing to me. Not to mention, like I said before, I don't have any back or neck problems. No problems at all. Though I have never done yoga, it sounds like something that you might like and maybe might help with the back pain? Maybe others that do yoga can tell you more since I have no clue!

Go look on the runnersworld.com forums , they have an injuries/cross training thread. A lot of people do yoga to help avoid injuries. Theres a few that said that they don't have back pain if they do it. But ideally a doctor should rule out arthritis or some other medical condition.

I don't let anybody touch my neck either. Plus usually the chiropractor wants you to come back every week.

I'm not a big fan of chiropractors. It seems like most folks I know who go them end up going to them for the rest of their lives. Plus, I have a hard time with the philosophy that every physical ailment is a result of misalignment. I even heard a chiropractor in my area complain that in this state they can't deliver babies...

Physical therapy is what I believe in. It may take longer and it may take more hard work, but the results seem to be more permanent and don't require constant maintainance for the rest of your life.... If you really, really think you need to be adjusted, check out an osteopath. They are MD's who are trained in chiropractic techniques.

As far as weight training, I have been working on that related to my career goals because I will need to be in top form. I do situps 6 days a week (ok, I actually like doing situps and I'm good at them - yes, I really do know that I am weird! ). My abs have gotten very strong. I also do "reverse situps" 3 days a week (not sure what they are called) to help with my back muscles. I also do pushups 6 days a week - 3 days fewer pushups - a lighter day. The other 3 days I push it. Those days I also lift weights for my arms and shoulders. I will need a lot of upper body strength in my career path. I have come a LONG way in this area but I know it will be to my benefit and safety to continue working hard at this and improving.

I've had the problems with my left leg all along, not just with the new shoes. I'm probably misaligned somehow, but I've been to the chiropractor once and I don't think I'll ever go back. It did "fix" the back problem I had at the time, but like someone said, everyone I know who's been to a chiropractor has been going every week or two for years. I don't think it's necessary. And I certainly don't believe all the hooey about chiropractors being able to fix everything that ails you. The chiropractor I went to was trying to convince a friend to bring her baby in (at about six months old) and was convinced her 8-year-old's allergies were because he was misaligned. Give me a break.

I do yoga twice a week and strength training with very low weight whenever the mood strikes. That's once or twice a week probably. I could probably benefit from more, but I hate it. My back is in good shape--I do those "reverse situps" as well and I feel like a new woman since I started sleeping on a Tempurpedic. I definitely should do more ab work, but we've been getting a lot of that in yoga lately and I just can't bring myself to do more situps than that.

Has anyone read any of Jeff Galloway's books? He writes a column for Runner's World and I got his book for women runners. It says don't stretch. It also says don't do yoga. Everything else I've ever read says the exact opposite and I just can't believe he's right. Thoughts?

Haven't read it. I don't stretch before working out. You only stretch a warm muscle. So if you stretch before running, do it after your warm up.

Didn't hear about the yoga thing. I wonder what his reasoning is.

I'll renew my runners world if i keep running for another month or two, I just canceled it because I quit running and then they automatically renewed it for me.

I looked it up on amazon, it was written in 1984 so some information might be out of date.

I have the updated 2007 version of the book. He says stretching and yoga are bad for you, period. He says they cause more injuries than anything else. Now granted, I don't do a lot of stretching, but I take issue if someone says never to do it when everyone else says you should.

Well you have to make your own decision but if I don't stretch, I am more sore the next day. There is always at least one person who has a different opinion about anything.

Now that I have gotten past a 20 min run I can definitely feel that my hamstrings are tighter and I am not as flexible (common in runners). I definitely could tell when I went back to the yoga class after not going for a few months.


I am going to yoga later tonight , loosen up my legs a little. It will be nice to stretch in a heated room for an hour since its so cold and windy out

I used to take Taekwondo and we stretched A LOT before class. I felt a ton better and was much more flexible. (obviously!) So maybe I do need to stretch. I haven't done that in a long time.

I have heard that you should warm up, then stretch to avoid injury. I have never heard no stretching at all though.

You guys talked some sense back into me; I won't be doing the chiropractor route. I think I'll start with trying a massage. I agree that you do end up going back for the rest of your life. No thanks. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

No stretching? Eeeks! The only time I've been injured is when I DIDN'T stretch. Now, I do believe in doing a little warmup before you start stretching - and I do most of my stretching after my workout, but none? I can't agree with that. I suppose some folks might get injured if they don't stretch properly or "over-do" it, but that's no different than people getting injured because they don't exercise properly... And I agree: I can always tell if I missed a stretch the next day! Ouch!

And becoming more flexible is a plus too! Not that I've ever been very flexible but....

also with yoga EVERY instructor will tell you it is not a competition, and that if it hurts , stop. Also if you don't think you can't go to the next level, then don't. If you follow that rule you greatly minimize your chance of getting hurt.

I'm flexible in some poses but totally inflexible in others. Weird.

Yoga was nice tonight, I am ready to run tomorrow..
