Well, the race is over and I survived. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the results, but ther's a little problem area that needs some work. I finished the 5K in 40:25, which is 3:03 faster than my time last Labor Day weekend. That's the good part. The disappointing part is that I wanted that sub-40:00 time so bad I could taste it! And I really thought I had in my grasp before the race started, because my last several training runs were so good. Unfortunately, I did the one thing I said I wouldn't: let adrenaline get the best of me! The starter said, "GO!", and I went off like a runaway beer truck! By the time I realized what I'd done, my lungs were screaming, "SLOW DOWN, DUMMY! YOU'RE KILLING US!" I ended up walking far sooner (and more) than I wanted, but I did manage to finish fairly strong. The young guy in our group that couldn't run due to an injury, came out to be my spotter. I had him station himself at the top of the home stretch, but he ended up coming even further down the street to cheer me on. That really meant a lot to me, because he had been so disappointed about being hurt, but yet he came anyway - just to support me and the rest of our group. How special is that?! Anyway, that one's behind me, and I'm getting prepped for the 2008 Charleston Distance Run 5K on August 30. I need to get a larger mp3 player and set up 2 playlists: one that is nothing but mellow stuff for Pre-race, and the other with my current list of Training/Race songs. That 2nd list may help to calm me down, because I was so hyped-up before this one that I couldn't stand still. Adrenaline can be a terrible thing, can't it? See y'all later! Duane
