We don't have a dog, but we shave our cat.

I did a short mile and a half tonight and had a light dinner to be ready for my mile tomorrow. I had a 10:30 pace tonight...man, I'd sure love to be sub-10:00 tomorrow...but my goal is sub-10:30. I think I can do it, especially since it should be cool in the morning and it's a downhill course.

Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow!!! I'll be cheering in my head.

I'm trying to begin running for cardio and weight loss. Anyone recommend certain exercises, stretches, etc to help build up the lower body?

Thanks. It was really humid this morning and I wasn't prepared for that, but it turned out okay. I could feel sweat running down my back before we ever started!

Also, I ran in a skirt today. The Runner's World article about skirts inspired me. There was another woman in a skirt, too. No one seemed to think it was weird and I didn't really think about it either once I got there. I think I'll make the skirt my "official" race outfit.

Welcome!

A few things. First - before you stretch, you want to do some warmups to get your muscles warmed up FIRST. Otherwise, you risk injury.

About.com has some great articles on this.

Warming up

Stretches

Running stretches

I do stretch some before my runs, but after the run is when I really spend time stretching. This will help prevent or lessen sore muscles. It also helps loosen up your muscles which will prevent injury over the long haul. There is one running expert who is against stretching, but if you do it properly, I find stretching invaluable. Just remember that if you stretch improperly you risk injury - so don't go overboard!

Here is a link about strength training for runners.

And here is where you can find these articles and many, many more for reference.

A few other notes: Get a good pair of running shoes. This will help you prevent injury and will make your runs much more fun and much less painful. Bad shoes can make your feet hurt, your knees hurt, etc. If you have a running store near you, go in and get fit for shoes. Proper fit is important (and it's not like fitting for dress shoes) as well as knowing how you walk/run to know where you need extra support, etc. I tend to pronate inwards and have fairly flat arches so my shoes are designed to help with that.

Also, stay well hydrated. You will need to drink a lot more water and if you don't drink enough, you will have problems with cramping, etc. Eat healthy! Yes, running enables you to eat more "goodies", but too many goodies will actually make your runs harder.

Find a good training routine and do what it takes to stick with it. Start slow and work your way up to your goals. You will NOT be able to start by running a full mile or 5K. You will need to work your way to that goal.

I love my skirts!!! I did Tucson Marathon in a hot pink one! Last weekend I did a half marathon in my blue one. They are just too cute.

The race this morning went well. Ds1 and I had been planning on doing it for a while. Then, at dinner last evening, ds3 decided he wanted to go, too! This morning we headed to the race. I helped ds3 line up at the back of the runners, then I lined up with ds1. The gun went off and that was the last I saw of ds1. Yup. The kid smoked me. By a full 2:30, which for a 5K is HUGE. He was pleased with his performance. I didn't run nearly as hard as I could as this wasn't a real race for me, mearly running to "motivate" ds1. But, I did manage to get 1st in my age group! Ds3 also did very well. He had the strongest kick at the finish. You should have seen the look on his face!

I still need to do a long ride this afternoon, then a long run in the morning. We leave for vacation tomorrow.

Congrats to you and your sons! Very cool! I must admit my kick at the end of races stinks but I haven't really worked on it either... I was a sprinter when I was younger but there you are starting fresh.

I ran 3 miles today. It was getting warm and I started later than I should have which I regretted, but I still did ok. I also did my upper body workout today. I really tried to push myself so we'll see how stiff I am tomorrow, but I feel good now!

One thing I do have is an end-of-race surge. My husband commented on it today...when I passed three runners ahead of me to get that 9:07. When I see the finish line, or my house if I'm training, I go into high speed. I think it must be left over from when I ran track...waaaaaay back in the day...when I wasn't an old lady.

Congrats to HC and her brood of runners!!! Where are you going on vacation?

Welcome to our thread, Pirate! Phosy gave you good advice all the way around. So all I have to say is--what she said!

I've began drinking a gallon of water a day. He's helping crave my appetite for food as well. I've also began eating healthy, or rather, I have been for awhile. I just have stubborn belly/hip/side fat that I'm desperate to rid of, and cardio is evidently the best way to do so.

Thanks for the links. Those hamstring stretches are my least favorite thing in the world right now.

I read it laughed at seeing guys at the Skirtchasters events in one. That there is a series of running events around the Highland Games in Boone (NC). I wonder should the manufacturers of running skirts make a running top with plaid sections and a matching plaid skirt for men for these events. Now men in plaid running skirts and matching plaid tops for a Highland Games or a Scottish festival would make much sense.

Heat index over 100 when doing the Hot Summer Night 5k slowed my time and I was dead-tired after running the last 200 meters as fast as I could. Track work last week was tiring but cross-training will be out for the month. I slowed to nearly 12 minutes when I can go high teens into elevens normally in better weather. (I've gone <10 once, in 2004, in an official 5k. I've also gone under 10 for a wintertime track meet once.)

Gym owners announced a sale and the new owners are planning to make everything for teen girls (and their gymnastics group) only. It seems everywhere you go in this mid-size town everything is girls only save for the hospital's program. Of course it doesn't hurt when the huge public school in town doesn't offer a baseball program, and we have in our county the largest high school that doesn't offer football and that school is dominated by girls because boys don't want to be there since they can't play sports.

(There's one college in Atlanta where they don't have any fall sports for men, but many for women, and men only play in winter sports with a tiny number of spring sports. Title IX has changed the rules where males are now punished.)

When you've read Jessica Gavora's book you should understand!

Legs...like...lead... I barely made it through two miles tonight. It's hot hot HOT and supposed to be this way all week. Ick.

Lots of men in kilts at the Scottish run in NYC. I wish my husband would run. He wears a kilt from time to time and it would be awesome to see him race in one!

Bobby--Your town sounds weird. And doesn't Title IX go both ways? Can't the boys get their sports through legal means?

Also, I think I'm allergic to something in my neighborhood. For the past week, I've been sneezing and sniffling by the time I've finished every single run.

My allergies have been really bad lately too. Usually, I don't have too many problems until later in the summer. Everyone else is miserable now too though so at least I'm not alone in my misery!

I'm so glad Zyrtec is OTC now! It's a lot easier to come by. Usually the neti works fine, but I guess the pollen is out of control right now. I wonder what's blooming (or rotting) that I'm allergic to?

Zyrtec

If you go to www.weather.com and put in your zip code, you can actually get a "pollencast" as well as a basic graph for what the levels of the 3 main types of allergens are for your area (tree, grass, weeds). Right now, weeds are highest for my area - and it's weeds that I have problems with. I have no idea which weeds of course, but weeds...

Saturday morning was my long run for the week, and it turned into the longest run I've ever made! I went over to the cemetery again, so I could use the GPS loops that I've laid out. Did 3 laps of my 0.88 mile loop and 1 of my 0.74 loop for a total of 3.38 miles . . . and only walked about 1/4 mile, so I actually can say that I've truly run a 5K now! I was tired, to be sure, but BOY! did I feel good when I was through. It was hot and humd out, but there was a breeze blowing in the Memory Gardens which helped to lessen the blow. And I also stopped by my car after each lap to grab a drink of ice water, and that hydration really helped get me over the top. I was so thankful to God for allowing me to finish that distance! Now I can hardly wait for this Saturday - it's going to be 3.5 miles!

Congrats to HC and her "brood of runners!" Ds1 sounds like quite a runner, and ds3 sin't too shabby either! And you too, Kristin! 9:07 for a mile? I'll never see that fast of a time, no matter how hard or long I train! But I'm not jealous of your speed, since I'm content to just get my time for a mile down to around 11:30 to 12:00, which will give me a decent 5K time every race.

See y'all!

Duane

Good job, Duane!

I've decided that I might as well give up on long runs as long as our temperatures stay in the mid-90s. I just can't seem to acclimate to it. It looks like weeds and grass are our allergy problems. I guess I'll be keeping Zyrtec in business for awhile, because there's no way to avoid either on my runs around here.

I've inspired one of my co-workers to begin running. She's quite overweight and nervous about it, so I have agreed to take her out this evening and get her started. She bought shoes and has been walking every day for at least half an hour. I think I'm going to try having her run :30, then walk 1:00. See how she does and adjust as needed. Anyone have any advice?

That's awesome Duane! Keep it up!

Stellaluna - that's precisely why I always run in the mornings. Even then, it's warmer than I'd like and saps my energy, but there really is no way on earth I'd want to run in the afternoons when it's in the 90s around here. Ugh... I wilt just watching other people out running at that time...

I ran 2 miles this morning. The radio said it was on 54F but they lied and I was sweating like a pig by the end and feeling very tired, but at least I got it in.

Stella,

That's exactly how "Couch 2 5K" does it. They get you started running in small increments, then increase the time little by little until you're running far more than walking. It's a wonderful way to do it.

BTW, thanks, my sisters, for your encouragement! It really means a lot!

I actually passed three different runners during my lunch hour. It's 95 degrees and the sun is blazing! Crazy people.

Do you guys have more humidity in the mornings? We do. Even though it's cooler, the humidity will stay at 50-60% until about lunch. By the evening, it drops to <20%, which does make it easier as well.

I live in a desert so humidity is rarely an issue. Lately the humidity has been around 3-5% so to be honest, if it is a little more humid in the mornings, that's a good thing!
