rnershigh -> RE: The Running Thread (12/8/2007 1:31:51 PM)

Finally the weather is warmer, about 50, so I get to run outside! It's been a week and I am looking forward to it. I couldn't get myself to run on the treadmill last night, so I'm itching to go outside.

phosadaud -> RE: The Running Thread (12/8/2007 1:38:25 PM)

Our weather is getting colder! [:D] But today is my "day off" so I didn't run...

Have a good run! [:)]

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/8/2007 2:05:53 PM)

I went to yoga today and tomorrow I will run at the gym since 1) it may ice and snow and 2) have an appointment to get a fitness assesment.

Then I am going to try to get these 5 -10 pounds off. LOL

But if today was my run day I went have went outside, because its sunny even though its cold. Can't win.

Thank ya![:D] I been real lazy this week. Only run 3 times (counting today). I could never get the motivation to face the monotony of the treadmill or brave the chilly weather.

his_chosen -> RE: The Running Thread (12/9/2007 12:16:29 PM)

Up early for a 60min swim. Then ran from home. I usually run from the gym but forgot my heart rate monitor. Fun little run. Not totally recovered from my marathon, but the run felt good.

It was 23F for my run this morning. I ran 2 miles and I was VERY ready to go inside by the end! Brrrr!

Ack! That's cold! I used to be an early morning runner, but I find I run better in the evening (plus, I hate getting up so early!LOL). It's really drizzly and cloudy today, such a blah kind of day, but I'm going to go out and run anyways. It's not cold or windy, chilly, but it's bearable.

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/9/2007 4:59:44 PM)

You needed another layer if you were still cold.

I got my 30 min run in plus some walking in. My fitness assesment was ok. I still need to get in better shape , but I knew that. I will get it redone in a few months.

Calea37 -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 10:15:19 AM)

I finally got a good run yesterday and today. I started struggling there last week!

STILL haven't been able to get up the energy to lift again, though. [sm=crazy.gif]

Miss Giggles, you live in Michigan...do you run outside all winter long? I'm in Ohio, and it's so cold! Doesn't it hurt to breathe out in that cold? I can't seem to do that without having my lungs HURT.

Calea

McFatty -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 10:29:39 AM)

I know there are lots of runners on here. I've never been that good at it. I'm trying to get into a habit of running so that I can pass the Navy fitness test. I'm going to boot camp in about three and a half months, so I have that long to build up to running steadily. Does anyone have any pointers?

stellaluna -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 10:57:11 AM)

3 1/2 months is plenty of time, if you train consistently. What is the distance you'll have to run to pass the fitness test?

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 10:58:35 AM)

I've only been out twice in 30 degree weather. Until its lighter in the evenings I am just running outside on the weekends when its light out, but I won't go out in the snow and rain.

The weather hasn't bothered my lungs (yet)

McFatty, I would try the runners world beginner plan or the Couch to 5k running plan.

I'm on Week 9 and then I will do a program that goes up to an hour long run

HomeSpunLady -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 1:10:03 PM)

Awesome! A running thread! I stopped in early nov as it was too cold, but I have asked for some under armour stuff for christmas. I miss it so! Anyone know of some good understuff that is reasonably priced? Buying on the net is preferrable. We live in the boonies.

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 1:15:56 PM)

UnderArmour does not usually go on sale. Nike does sometimes though. Nike has a very nice website with a clearance area in it as well.

I have a pair of the UnderArmour Frosty tights and an UnderArmour running jacket (it was on sale only because of black Friday). It is very warm and will get me through 0 degree weather.

Target has some decent stuff. it's the champion by C9 line, I bought one of their fleece tops (supposed to be wicking) for 15.00 and supposedly they have the mock turtlenecks but the target by me did not have any. They do have some weird colors sometimes though which is the only reason why I don't have more of their clothes.

Only the parts that were "exposed".... [&:]

I had to skip my run today though. It snowed yesterday and the roads are awful. I'm actually home from work today because so many local schools are closed due to how slick the roads are so my boss said not to come in... [sm=dance.gif][sm=dance.gif][sm=dance.gif]

I missed running though. I tried to do some cardio inside but it's just not the same... [&o]

I hate mornings but it's the only time I can really be consistant so I just try to deal with it. It's gotten easier though the longer I have done it.

Congrats! I think the key is to find what works for you. There are a lot of plans out there for how to do it but everyone is different so you need to know yourself and what will work best for you.

First, find a time of day that you can consistently exercise. This is especially true if you aren't 18 anymore! [:D] I have found that lack of consistancy is the number one reason I fail to meet my goals. Running just once or twice a week, just doesn't cut it!

Second, make sure you know how to avoid injuries. I pulled a muscle in my shoulder last year and it was many months before it was 100% again. The last thing you want to do before you head off to boot camp is get injured!

Third, have you spoken with your recruitor? When I was trying to enlist in the army reserves, the recruitors had good input on training regimines. Many recruitors will even have exercise groups you can join to prepare you.

Fourth, set realistic goals and stick with it! For me, I set distance goals and worked at improving my times for those distances. Others set time goals. Find what works for you. Push yourself but know your limits so you don't hurt yourself!

his_chosen -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 4:56:22 PM)

I would second the Couch to 5K. Keep in mind, though that coolrunning.com will be down starting Wednesday. So go and print out the schedule TODAY!

As far as running clothing... Go to a running store and get the 'feel' of the fabric. Then, go to a thrift store! Check both in 'sports/athletic' as well as mens/womans. I find a lot of my stuff in boys as well.

Today is a rest day. I need it. I've started coughing again. Tomorrow is yoga and swim.

stellaluna -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 5:36:47 PM)

Why is Cool Running going down?

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/10/2007 5:44:14 PM)

Its merging the forums and the running log with active.com. The website will go back up after next week.

Just a mile and a half in twelve minutes, but I'm not very fit at all, and I'm unable (at least mentally) to get past a half a mile (usually less) without slowing to a walk. That's what I'm trying to overcome.

HomeSpunLady -> RE: The Running Thread (12/11/2007 7:34:48 AM)

Then if that is what you can do, then do it! Eventually you will be able to breeze right though that half mile and think "gee I can go farther" then go farther! Just do what you can do. It's better than doing nothing. Everyone, from the greatest, fastest runner has had to start somewhere! When I started, my first run was like 30 seconds run and 5 mins walk! LOL! I laugh at that now. I can run 15 mins non-stop. I know others can do so much more, but for me, that's a great place to be. You could try the walk run thing, that will help you to get there and build up the stamina.

Miss Giggles -> RE: The Running Thread (12/11/2007 7:47:36 AM)

Thats what I run about a 12 or 11 min mile outside, so it can be done. And its really not that fast because you feel like you are going the same speed walking.

So just keep at it, after the first 5 weeks its mostly mental finishing the runs.

Don't give up. It really is all mental, you can't give up.[:)] What I find helps me to motivate myself before I go, picturing myself running on my route. When I'm actually out there, if I'm having a bad run, I choose markers (a tree, a house, a bush, etc) and use that as the point I run to and then when I get to it, I choose another marker farther down. Those increments help me get through that short segment and not think of the entire 3+ miles I'm running, but that I'm running "short segments" instead. It doesn't feel as overwhelming if I think of it that way.

It'll take time for your body to adjust and get fit, once that is accomplished you can start increasing the duration or length of your runs. You can't start running 8/9 minute miles (or whatever pace your goal is) right off, and you won't be able to run 3, 4, or 5 miles (or whatever mileage is your goal) in the beginning either. You'll go through the whole walk/run/walk/run routine and you'll feel out of breath, like your lungs are on fire and you'll feel sore and miserable and you'll wonder, "why am I doing this? it won't get better", but one day it does and then you feel so great when you run, you find yourself able to run longer and longer and farther and farther.

McFatty -> RE: The Running Thread (12/11/2007 2:51:54 PM)

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I don't know why running is harder than spending ten or fifteen minutes in the wrestling ring! lol
