ORIGINAL: McFatty Just a mile and a half in twelve minutes, but I'm not very fit at all, and I'm unable (at least mentally) to get past a half a mile (usually less) without slowing to a walk. That's what I'm trying to overcome. Don't give up. It really is all mental, you can't give up.[:)] What I find helps me to motivate myself before I go, picturing myself running on my route. When I'm actually out there, if I'm having a bad run, I choose markers (a tree, a house, a bush, etc) and use that as the point I run to and then when I get to it, I choose another marker farther down. Those increments help me get through that short segment and not think of the entire 3+ miles I'm running, but that I'm running "short segments" instead. It doesn't feel as overwhelming if I think of it that way. It'll take time for your body to adjust and get fit, once that is accomplished you can start increasing the duration or length of your runs. You can't start running 8/9 minute miles (or whatever pace your goal is) right off, and you won't be able to run 3, 4, or 5 miles (or whatever mileage is your goal) in the beginning either. You'll go through the whole walk/run/walk/run routine and you'll feel out of breath, like your lungs are on fire and you'll feel sore and miserable and you'll wonder, "why am I doing this? it won't get better", but one day it does and then you feel so great when you run, you find yourself able to run longer and longer and farther and farther.
