Sheri Easter is my favorite with Libbi and Karen a close second and third.

Not on the list: I would agree with SGEnthusiast, Chris Freeman is great and doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

1. Lauren Talley
2. Kim Hopper

sunluvingirl -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (1/7/2008 10:18:01 PM)

I voted for Lauren Talley but I also like Susan Whisnant's voice. Why wasn't she on? Usually I tend to go more for male vocalists than female. I'm curious, am I the only one who CANNOT understand why everyone thinks Vestal Goodman had such a great voice. Sounds like she was a wonderful women though.

Yes, I think you are the only one. [:D] j/k. I actually would be interested to know if there are others too. It has occurred to me VERY recently that maybe I am biased but I do like Vestal's voice. Living in a family with diverse musical preferences, I've been amazed at the people I think are the best singers in the world which my family strongly disagrees with (and vice versa). Oh well. That's what makes the world an interesting place. [:)]

I really, really like Sister Vestal's voice! The only other female vocalist I like about as much as I like her would be Libbi Perry Stuffle--and a good deal of what attracted me to Libbi's voice was its similarity to Sister Vestal's.

sunluvingirl -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (1/8/2008 8:54:11 AM)

Maybe I was to strong or hasty in stating my dislike of Vestel's voice. Honestly, I haven't heard her a lot, just times when they come across XM & it just didn't strike me. I guess its just my opinion!!

JimC -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (1/8/2008 1:35:38 PM)

I think the je ne sais quoi of Vestal's popularity wasn't just her voice, but the fact that she put everything she had into it when she sang.

That having been said, my vote goes to Libbi Stuffle, with a write in for Rita Pearson.

You are NOT the only one. I really hate to admit it, but I never have enjoyed her voice. I remember being at a Hopper's concert about 12 years ago, and a man in the front row yelled out (to Kim Hopper), "Honey, Vestal ain't got nothing on you!" I remember thinking to myself, "Is he serious?" I couldn't believe that he would even consider comparing the two! Granted, Kim Hopper is my favorite SG singer, but still. I was in shock (this was before I realized that Vestal was as popular as she was)! I know that I'm in the minority on this one, but I just don't care for her voice. I do think that she must have been a wonderful woman for so many people to have loved her. That's what makes us all unique; we all have our likes and dislikes. [;)]

jchaz -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (1/8/2008 5:34:39 PM)

JimC mentioned Mrs. Rita of The Diplomats.

I, too, think she is an AWESOME vocalist, and a great communicator on stage. She's just a sweet, sincere person. She's one of my all time favorite people, and there are few people who connect with me, spiritually, as she does.

Right now, The Dips are getting the same comments that The Perrys were getting a few years ago about "sounding like" The Goodmans. That is a great compliment to them, and they'll tell you that in a heartbeat. The Goodmans are heroes of theirs. But, really, I don't think it's so much that The Dips actually 'sound' like The Goodmans, as much as it is that they 'remind' people of The Goodmans. Obviously, Mrs. Rita's powerful voice, with her uninhibited, belting presentation-- and even her size -- put folks in mind of Vestal. But, no, ReeRee sounds like Rita Pearson. And that's the way it should be.

You expressed it much better than I could, Charlie.
Thank you!!

I voted for Sheri Easter, but only because Stacie Caraway, formerly of the Speck Trio, was not listed.

I didn't know she had left the Specks! When I went to the Mike Speck Ministry homepage, there's no mention of the trio! Do you know what's going on?????

Godisgood04 -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (5/14/2008 10:17:34 AM)

I voted for Libbi, but had Susan Whisnant been on the list, she would have been by choice.

They announced over a year ago that she was leaving, then they announced she was still with them. So it's a little confusing.

I first heard Vestal at a Gaither Homecoming concert, and I will admit that I was not immediately captivated by her voice, but it wasn't long before I couldn't get enough of it. It is an acquired taste, made even more pleasing by her wonderful personality. I play her songs often.

It is a unique voice, instantly recognizable, much like Jake Hess (my favorite male singer)

threepartharmony -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (5/14/2008 5:13:15 PM)

I have 3.

Taranda Greene
Susan Whisnant
Karen Peck Gooch

floridacracker -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (5/14/2008 9:00:16 PM)

Lily Weatherford is my all time favorite, but off the list Charlotte Ritchie is the one I really like.

BearNC -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (5/14/2008 9:59:56 PM)

Susan Whisnant would be my pick

MSnurse -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (5/15/2008 12:28:12 AM)

Yes Susan and Libby are great; however, I still must vote for Kim Hopper. Not only for her outstanding vocal abilities but she does great producing/arrangements in the studio as well.

jwillis -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (8/2/2008 9:04:19 PM)

Libbi Stuffle

danielmount -> RE: Favorite Female Vocalist (8/3/2008 6:29:09 AM)

Looks like Libbi Stuffle and Kim Hopper have pulled away to a clear lead. They're the two I suspect are generally the leaders in the actual awards.
