I was thinking about some of the good old groups that I used to really enjoy hearing on the radio. I've actually been around some of these over the years, yet others I've never met. I'm also including their most notable song, if applicable.
The Ray Branham Family (Almost Home)
Actually saw them a few weeks ago. They still have that 'hard, fast and loud' Pentecostal sound.
The Looper Trio (On The Other Side Of Jordan) I always loved their simple electric guitar, bass & rhythm music. I heard them sing a hauntingly beautiful song on our local country-gospel station this week. It was called "Life Beyond Death" It is such a powerful song. I think Cheryl Dalton of The Dalton Gang is the daughter of Coleman Looper, and when she was younger, she and her Dad had a group together.
The Morris Stancil Quartet (later, "Singers")
(and even later, The Sounds Of Home)
Stancil was an awesome writer, and had cuts by many of the top groups of the 70s & 80s.
The Kingsmen's "Beautiful Home" and The Primitives' "Because He Loved Me" were among some of his better known tunes. He always had a delightful group. They were always very spiritual. Kinda sounded like the original Singing Echoes, before the kiddies jined in to fill the Granparent's shoes. Later on in the mid-80s, "Morris Stancil & The Sounds of Home" had an old-timey sound- kinda like The Chuck Wagon Gang. They usually sang with piano accompaniment only. The bass singer, Rev. Elijah Cowart, was an old-time preacher man in his 70s. He was always good for an impromtu sermon. I miss genuine spontenaity (sp?) like that. They were HUGE at The Primitive's Hominy Valley Singing for many years.
The Roy Knight Singers
I first met The Knights in October of '79 at The Stancil's Anniversary Singing in Canton, GA. I was an immediate fan. Of course, they later became well known, to some degree, because of Sandy Knight's writings. They were another of those very high-spirited Pentecostals groups that could sing the Glory Down. Roy could play the piano like no other. My greatest compliment as a pianist is when someone says 'You play a little like Roy Knight'. We all know Sandy's famous songs, but some pre-fame songs were just as good -- "Rapture Trumpet", "Caught Away" and "Why Seek Ye The Living Among The Dead" were unbelievable lyrics. Current groups would do well to ask for songs from her earlier efforts. I'm sure they'd find a few unheard hits.
Are there any 'not-so-well-known' groups that really made an impression on you? I'm sure I'll think of others, but these can get us started for now.

The Roy Knight Singers are still singing, they were at a Labor Day concert at Table Rock, SC this year.

Had they continued, they would have been a major group. But, sometimes, God has different plans, and sometimes, people are smart enough to follow His idea, rather than their own. I've always wondered if that wasn't the case with this great group. I certainly enjoyed them while they were out there. I remember at NQC one year, the rumor was flying that John had passed away. Actually, it was their dad, Rev. John Reinhardt, Sr. I'm reasonably sure they are still around North Georgia, but have chosen to just fade away, and be a sweet memory to their fans.

They definitely are a sweet memory and I always thought they had a sound similar to the Hinsons too. I love it when I'm not the only one who thinks certain things.

When did you start frequenting THIS forum? GLAD YOU ARE HERE!
I was up in Rome today. Had lunch with my Aunt Frances at Red Lobster down the street from Shorter Ave Church. We were playing "Fountain", and she asked about you guys! Pretty cool. You know she has early onset of Alzheimers. I was THRILLED that she remembered you. She loves to hear you Davis boys sing.
She asked when we were going to be recording ya'll again. i told her we were talking about it, but that it would be a little while. She said to tell you all "Hey!" when I saw you next. Never dreamed it would be on here today...

I've been coming here about once a week since you told me about it the last time we talked. Tell your Aunt Frances that we said hey. We're still mulling over some songs to complete a project. I came across a old GVB CD the other day and their rendition of Hide Thou Me. We started singing it at our family Christmas get together and I think it will definitely be a good one for us. I'll give you a ring on my way home from work soon.

We had them at our Church a few years ago. Except I think they was going by The Coleman Looper Family. I enjoyed them very much. You are right about their music. It just makes their concerts enjoyable and easy to listen to.

There are 3 groups that I really miss. They was starting to become extremely well known, but at the same time, stayed on the "local level." They would sing at NQC, but it didnt' bother them to come to a Church that didn't have but 30 at it.
1. The Sons Family - These folks live just about 30 min away from me. They was such great talents. Nothing like family harmony. After Eric and Char' left, Gail had wanted to continue singing, but I guess those plans fell through. There big hit "When I Start My Day With You" is a song that was written straight from the bottom of Chars' heart. No matter who sings it, you can always feel the power in it.
2. The Comptons - I have almost everyone of their albums. I've never heard harmonies like this in my life. They was always consistant with their sound. No matter who sang with them, they always sounded the same. It wasn't nothing fancy and flashy... just good old West Virginia Singing. Chuck still sings by himself and is doing a wonderful job. I got a video the other day of a "Comptons Reunion" that took place over the summer and it was great to hear them all back together again.
3. Journeymen Qt (KY) - We had these guys at our Church on a couple different occassions. Even though they wasn't as well known as some of the other groups we had, people always said "that was the best group we've ever had here" or "i enjoyed that more than i did when .... was here." They didn't blast your head off, they had great stage presence, they enjoyed talking to people at the table. They just knew how to put on a good concert. It wasn't a show when they was around... it was Church.

The Sons Family are some of my and Foster's dearest friends. Char and my Foster are like sisters. Char & Eric and the kids came to Atlanta and spent the weekend with us and we went to Stone Mountain Park. She said then that her Mom was hoping to regroup, but that she thought she'd not travel again quite so extensively. Last I heard, Gayle had a couple that was singing with her some.
As for them (Eric & Char), they are singing locally with Ernie Ferguson, their longtime buddy who also traveled with The Sons Family some. The new group is called "Sunday Drive". I'm pretty sure that they know there was another group with that name. I'm not sure if they've gotten the name legally yet, or not. I'm sure they'll research it before they get too far into it.
Before anyone tries to read something into all this, please note: There was no family squabble that lead to the original group disbanding. Gayle supported the decision for the Bakers to come off the road, and they supported her decision to try to keep traveling. After some much needed time off, The Bakers decided to sing again, but on a smaller scale, so they could devote more time to their kids, homelife, and their educations. I commend them for that.
When they were here in the Summer, Eric talked about how much they enjoyed The Compton's music. They even sang a Compton song for us here around my piano. It was gorgeous. When I was with Liberty, we always enjoyed working with The Comptons. They were always very sincere and genuinely spiritual. I miss them, too.
The J'men were one of those groups that I admired from a distance. I never heard them in a full concert, but at NQC, I always enjoyed being around them. Stacey was always a classy guy. I think they could've been a major group, had they gotten the breaks that other groups did. They certainly were talented. Maybe, we'll see them again before too much longer.

I have a couple tapes from the Perkins Family floating around my house. My personal fave is "Perkin' Up with the Perkins Family" live project from '92 or '93. On it they sing songs such as "When It's My Time", "What A Wonderful Day" and others that I can't think of. I've always wondered how it would sound with Ricky Perkins in a quartet. I would think it would be phenomenal.

I worked a talent show one time with Ricky Perkins, Danny Riley and Little David Young. I emceed, and they were the judges. That evening, The David Young Family, The Perkins Family, The Victors (David's male qt) did a concert, and the winners were announced. It was for Habitat For Humanity. It was a fun evening. I enjoyed working with all of them that day.
I saw Ricky's name associated with one of those controversial faith healers one time. They were doing a crusade in Cartersville, GA, I think it was. I think the evangelist's last name was Jenkins? I know he was in the news a lot around here... you know, the in-ear monitor thing, where a staffer fed him info that they had gleaned from the congregation before the service started. I hope Ricky isn't still in on that. He seemed to be on the up and up the night I worked with him. I must admit, I got a chuckle every time I saw the Perkins Family. They so fit the caricature of Ray Steven's DooRight Family.... I always wanted to hear Ricky say, "Now, Play The Pianer Mammer..."

That would be Sonny Jenkins I believe and he did some crusades here in SC as well. He booked quite a few SGM artists when he started out. Had the Nelons at one crusade, wanted the for a couple of others but Rex said 'no'. I know that Jenkins was charged with fraud for some of his business dealings in SC and I believe received jail time.

WOW,,,,as soon as I saw the name, I remembered Harold Ray and Maxine walking down the isle, Harold with the doghouse bass, Maxine with the accordion singing in the spirit. Maxine has gone on to be with the lord but Harold, Donna, Ronnie are still singing. I was good friends with them years ago, even sang a few times with Donna and my cousin at our homechurch. Great people, great singers. Got the 33 1/3 album " Almost Home". They lived here in town for several years back in the 70's.
The whole Branham bunch is a very talented family including Harold Rays brothers and sisters. Have many blessed thoughts of them.
Have 2 or 3 old 33 1/3 albums of the Coleman Loopers from way back.
Never did know what happened with them.

I have been to several different concerts where the Sons Family and the Comptons were together. That used to be the trend in our area. If you had one, you had the other. I was over at Eric, Char & Gayles last year to look at buying their bus. They are such wonderful people.
I'm hoping that the Journeymen realize they have had enough time off. And need to get the bus cranked back up and hit the road again. Now that Dallas isn't singing with anyone...mabey they can regroup. I'm not sure who they would use for a bass singer. They seemed to change those quite often. But i did like the one that was on their last CD. Speaking of them.... I'm quite suprised that we havent seen their piano player (Brad????) back with a group.
COME BACK JOURNEYMEN!!! WE NEED YOU!!!!

I am a Southern Gospel '80s kid. I remember the Reinhardts and Perkins Family. I saw both artists in concert several times. The Roy Knight Singers are still producing great music. They had one of my favorite songs in 2007 with "Taking It Back".
Some other groups that I remember during that time period were Cedar Ridge, Mullins, McGruders (one of my favorites), and McFalls. I still have many recordings by these artists.

Anybody remember the Trailblazers from Dalton, Georgia? They were as good as many of the other professional quartets of the time. What ever happened to them?

Sandy Knight is one of my many cousins...She's a great songwriter,too! They still tour regularly...and make occasional appearances on Channel 16 in Greenville,SC. They have a great blend! I love to hear Rodney & Tracie sing!
