I don't see any of the contestants handling a rock n roll song well next week unless it is along the "soft rock" side ...it won't surprise me if it is their worst outing yet.

Actually, I could see David C and Syesha doing well, especially if the latter can find a good Aretha Franklin song to belt out. I do agree about the other two, however. I've been racking my brains, and I can't think of any pure rock & roll song that David A or Jason could sing. It completely goes against their image. I can well see this being the worst week for them.

I think people need to look at the lyrics, seriously.

I could see David A attempting a Doors song, or maybe something from the Moody Blues. But the problem there, especially with the Doors, is that he can't seem to put any real passion into his singing. Jason? If there are any Dylan songs on the list he could luck out. But I wouldn't be surprised if they've never heard any of the songs on the list. I've never seen anyone who wants to be a musician with less knowledge of music. Jason even said he'd never heard any of the Neil Diamond songs, and David said the same about the Beatles. The Beatles??? Was he raised in an elevator???

Here is a link to the "500 songs that shaped Rock 'N Roll"

There are a lot of songs there that all of them should be able to find something they can sing.

I thought Jason said he didn't "know" the songs -- I took that to mean he didn't know them well enough to sing them, not that he had never heard of them. Didn't Syesha say that as well, that she was unfamiliar with the songs?

I wonder exactly how they'll define "rock and roll." That seems like a pretty broad generalization. But that's good -- better to have more choices than just one artist's songs.

If someone was raised in an elevator, then that means they were exposed to easy listening. I'm sure songs like Hey Jude & Yesterday were arranged for easy listening. So, no one can say they never heard anything by the Beatles. kd

I just can't see Jason belting out some rock and roll, unless it's along the lines of The Beach Boys.

Syesha is getting to be one of my favorites, I think with the right song choices, she could be in the top two.

I think David A has a good voice, but my guess is it's not strong enough to hold out without damaging it.

If this is a talent competition and nothing else, David C will win.

Just my opinions.

Oh come on...Jason could do a depressing Nirvana song easily

I'd love to hear David C. sing something by The Fixx or Live - haven't seen the song list to know if that kind of rock is on there.

Ya know if David A would just do a song that was a fun-crowd pleaser, he'd be fine, too.

Syesha might have a challenge unless she went with a good rocker like Tina Turner or even Joan Jett's I love Rock-n- Roll!

Ought to be interesting to see the choices.

Unfortunately, Joan Baez didn't do rock and roll. However, maybe he could sing Elvis' "In the Ghetto." Or something from U2.

I must say that it sounded like many a Christian song on the radio now.

oh, no...not the "CCM is evil thread."

I could so see David A singing "In the Ghetto" - what a perfect song for his savant abilities. Maybe he could channel Elvis while doing so?

I think that Neil Diamond was really singing about grace - if I may do so, let me share the lyrics with ya. We can all discuss our take on the song then.

Laura - I agree with you that all the contestants should be able to find at least 2 songs off that list they are familiar with and could perform well. Next week will be interesting to see their picks.

Remind me at some point to tell y'all about a couple of country songs that are out right now - by Aaron Watson and Dolly Parton. I printed out both and have them in my Bible - I love to read their lyrics and fully absorb their messages.

***edited to correct a TOS violation - thanks for the heads up, Bill - that was one that I wasn't real clear on...

Melissa, posting the entire lyrics to a song is a TOS violation. It's also a copyright violation. You're allowed to post a verse or two and then link to the entire thing. Just a li'l hint from yer ol' Uncle Bill.

Thanks {{Uncle Bill}} - I fixed it. That was a TOS that I wasn't real clear on how it worked, but now I get it, thanks to your post.

Or maybe Bono. The more I think of it, the more I think a U2 song would fit him. That would fit his "got to save the planet" mentality.

Whoo hoo! I am definitely buying his album! Thank you for that link.

I'd love to hear them. As I said earlier, so far this season Dolly was my favorite guest mentor. I loved hearing "Travelin' Through" so much I downloaded the orginal version.

Babb - Did you see the U2 songs on the list? “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For”, “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. Think David A could pull any of these off?

Glad I could supply the link to Neil Diamond's album for you - I also saw the album for sale on Amazon.

As per your request - Aaron Watson's "Barbed Wire Halo" lyrics are here... you can listen to the song, and the entire album that it's on, here. If you watched Dolly on Idol, you already are familiar with the song she sung - "Jesus and Gravity" - the link to the lyrics is here. There were several links to videos for this song as well on Google.

The it'll remind most of us when Taylor Hicks sang the song. It wasn't actually bad but I can't remember if he had a positive remarks or not from the judges- but then he won that year

Jason did make a gesture when Ryan announced rock & roll week (what does that gesture mean anyway?), so he must be into the idea. He might just surprise us.

I'm kind of surprised at their lack of knowledge for the older tunes, maybe it's due to geographic location. My son is 21 (22 in June). He & his friends are all into the old southern rock & they listened to the stations that play that music. He was pretty shocked to see that I had Def Leppard Pyromania in my record collection. Decided mom was pretty cool after all! They also like the old country (Grand Ol Opry) music. I will have to check w/ him to see how well he knows Neil Diamond. I knows some Dolly. Not so sure about Mariah since that style's not really their thang. It surprises me that out of so many auditioned, they would end up w/ a group of folks that were pretty sheltered. Almost reminds me of that Brendan Fraser movie - can't remember the name. Worse than being raised in an elevator! kd

If I recall correctly, the judges loved it. It was one of the songs that really secured his place in the contest, at least in my opinion, lol. I voted for Taylor Hicks the whole time - and I'm glad he won, but I was sorely disappointed in his album...

Don't hold it against me, please. I see the error of my ways now... hubby told me I shoulda voted for Daughtry - I had to learn my lesson the hard way.

And just so y'all know, I'm going to pick up my own personal copy of Aaron Watson's Barbed Wire Halo album this afternoon at Hastings. They finally got it in!! I can't wait to get it so I'm not limited to listening to it online.
