Kathryn, that's incredible!!! Congrats!! I'm so happy for you! Your m/w sounds like a lovely person.

Don't know how I missed this - no, not from far away. My m/w clinic is LITERALLY a five minute walk from my house, and my secondary m/w probably lives 10 minutes from me ... not sure where my primary lives, but within a 20 min drive, I would think.

Wuhoo!!! I finally found a pool at Canadian Tire for $34.99 that is the exact same style and size as the pool I was going to have shipped to me for $45.99 PLUS SHIPPING from across Canada! Wuhoo! Maybe I'll be able to buy it this week. Our only concern is where to put it ... I'm not so sure the second floor is a good idea.

Umm ... the kid side in me is begging to come out ... "TOLD YOU SO!!!" I'm going to pick one up at Walmart on my next trip ...

As for where to put it -- I agree not the second floor ... what about in the dining room or something with one of the heavy duty tarps underneath (the kind you would use as ground cover when camping)

LOL - I know you said I could find them, but after visiting 3+ stores, I haven't been able to! I just looked on Can Tire's website today again and found a similar one.

Yeah, the problem with putting it on the main floor is that the m/w wants you labouring/birthing on one floor if possible - and generally the floor with the bathroom, so for our old house, the second floor. I'm going to talk to them more about it on Tuesday at my next appointment.

Wow ... my m/w isn't that picky (about being on one floor) ... she is even willing to go from my house to my friend's place a few blocks away if that is more comfortable!

LOL - I think that's just what they "prefer", because they like to have all the homebirth supplies and such in one place and a place for the baby to go if there's problems, and it's easier to do that on one floor - it wouldn't be very safe to run up our 17 stairs with a minutes-old newborn if I happened to have him/her in the pool on the first floor with the supplies up on the second. And as for the bathroom - it's recommended that you pee every hour in labour, so *I* don't really want to be hiking wet up those 17 steps every hour just to pee!!

LOL - Therein is the reason I LOVE having a toilet on every floor! No matter where you are, there is no more than a quick room cross to get to a bathroom!

Well, if you did decide that it would be advantageous to set the pool up on the 2nd floor, I would still heavily suggest the tarp -- but make it two instead of one ... one would be the basic floor covering, and the other you could slightly elevate the edges by tying the corners to a chair or something, just so that if water splashes, it ends up being slightly more contained.

Kim, this might be a silly suggestion, but could you rent a portable chair potty from a medical supply store? I wouldn't want to have a baby on the second floor...for the water issue, and for the issue if something goes wrong, any medical personnel would also have to do the stairs with you or baby in tow. Not that it's likely...but...

And I'd have my husband put in a half bath downstairs ASAP. Actually, if he's handy and you want to do that eventually anyway, you probably still have time to do that. You could get a toilet in and functioning and worry about walls later, KWIM?

HOORAY!!!!

I live in one of the only provinces in Canada where midwives aren't covered in healthcare, so the reason we couldn't have a midwife with Mary is it would have cost $5000+ dollars and we couldn't afford it. Well things are changing around here and they are going to be covered now!! So now even if we aren't back in BC with our next baby I will be able to have a midwife!!!!

...I had to share with someone, I am just too excited!

I love the change that is slowly happening in female reproduction/pregnancy issues.

That's really great news Chelsea.

Donna - you're sweet to be concerned However, we definitely do NOT have room on our main floor for a half-bath without extensive renovations - it's in the plans for somewhere in the unlikely and distant future I'm not really concerned about having the baby upstairs - most of the people I know who've had a homebirth have older-style homes with the bathroom upstairs and have laboured and delivered up there with no problems at all.

Rats...well, it was a thought anyway. I'm sure you'll make the upstairs work for you then.

YAY for advances in midwifery!! I too found out that my midwife has often been covered by out out-of-network portion of our insurance. Even if she wasn't, she only charges $2000 for a global fee.

After a weekend of thinking and praying, we are for sure going with this midwife. Did I mention that she has an RN attend with her? She herself is an RN but she has a lady who comes with her to help who is also an RN. I canceled my appts with my previous dr's office and made a new one with my midwife. I feel so much more at rest with this. It's funny, because, after I met with her, I'm eating better. At any rate, I'm glad all the berries are on sale.

Yay, Kathryn!! So she might be covered then by your insurance? That's amazing!! God is great!

I bought my pool yesterday I'm pretty excited. We've now got all the stuff for our homebirth purchased (or borrowed - one of my friends had a homebirth last year and lent me some of her stuff!! ) and I'm just so excited for June Bug's room to be finished and our closet to be finished so we can actually SET UP EVERYTHING!! My m/w will be doing a home visit next Tuesday to scope out the place, so it'll be wonderful to have everything actually looking homey by then!

I can't wait to hear all these homebirth stories-I don't think dh would ever go for it, so I will have to settle for no meds in a hospital- plus we always seem to live pretty far from a hospital, I think it would be different if we were five minutes away, but we are always 30-40...

Jennifer, we're doing the same thing. We're just going to stay home as long as possible to avoid the temptation of the drugs as long as we can. I think our doula will be very important for us in that area too.

I think to homebirth in this area you have to be within 15 - 30 minutes of a hospital ... I'm not sure which. The rule of thumb is "15 minutes from decision to incision" ... kind of a gruesome way to put it, but that's about how much time it takes them to get ready for an emergency c-section IN the hospital, so if you can be at the hospital in the same amount of time from home, generally they're happy (in our case, the m/w's would call in to the hospital and give a report and say that we need a c-section and they would prep for it just like normal, since I've pre-registered and they have all my anaesthesia info)

My good friend had a baby 9 weeks ago. They were going to have a doula and go natural. She started feeling funny at 1:30 a.m. She had her hubby hung out through the night and morning. They called their doula around 7 a.m., and she was at class for the day but told them they were doing great. Finally at 10:30 a.m. they decided her contractions were close enough that they should go to the hospital. They got to the hospital at 10:50 a.m. and the baby was born at 11:15 a.m. So she did very well laboring at home!!! I'm hoping for a similar situation. [:D

Staying home until the last minute--it's great, just make sure you get the timing right. My dh was terrified that I was going to have the baby in the car. We got there with plenty of time to spare (I was pushy but not pushing) but you never know.

I wish I had a link. I just read an article yesterday about a woman who had her baby in the car. Always strikes my funnybone to hear about these heroic women who battled such terrible odds and managed to push out a baby without a doctor in the vicinity. Can you imagine? No doctor! No stirrups! No instruments! How on earth did that baby ever get out!?!
