Can't we just focus on God for a few minutes a week exclusively?

This is what I don't get... I have never taken a drink of any kind into a service but I cannot for the life of me see why it would be a problem, as if taking a drink of something would distract me from the message or be a barrier between me and the Lord. I have enough things that are truly a problem, things that I have to deal with... but drinking something if I am thirsty would not be one of them. The Lord is no more the Lord in a Church service than He is at the mall or in traffic.

If anyone think's that they should not do this... they should not do it but if anyone has no problem with it and it is not forbidden in their church then... whatever and no noe should judge them over it, it is a small thing that has no bearing on reverence, IMO.

However, I would not do it myself if I thought it was offensive to someone else.

I lead worship and often take bottles or cups of water to sip.

This morning I took a glass of water up to my husband while he was preaching as I could tell his throat was very dry.

It's one thing to act like church is a movie theater. I think we need to respect the house of the Lord as a sign to others that it's important to us, but there's nothing in the Bible saying that it's wrong to eat or drink in church. IMHO. Now days, we understand that sometimes for health reasons people need to have a tiny snack or drink. I personally don't have a desire to eat in church. I think you understand what I mean.

What makes those four walls the "House of the Lord"? Is that the only place you can worship God? My God is bigger than that.

We are in agreement. We must worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. A glass of water does not add to or take away from that.

You're talking to a missionary. The house of the Lord is where ever you happen to be meeting to worship Him. I never mentioned any walls.

I understand, but its not my point. My point is...what is a fast? Why...did God institute fasting? I think there is an importance to putting the needs of the flesh behind the needs of the spirit and doing so totally...like a proper fast...deepens the spiritual experience...so to speak.

There has to be significance to fasting. A spiritual significance.

Someone speaking for extended periods obviously need a drink. Unless yer in one of dem dar charismatic tongue talkin' churches, you probably are not speaking through the entire sermon like the pastor.

I understand needs. This isn't about needs. Its about putting your wants aside for an hour and worship God. Not very many people will feint from thirst if they don't take a drink for an hour. Can't we just put that aside for the few mintues we are in church?

In another thread, the one about poor language in prayer, some have argued to do so is irreverent to God. I think its the same with this issue. Do we revere God enough to put aside our comforts for a few minutes a week and totally worship Him?

Worship...is important?

Why the hate filled rhetoric?

Is this all we are supposed to worship God? I thought worship was 24/7/365.

I would submit the entirity of my 3000+ posts as proof I have never resorted to hate filled rhetoric. I would submit to public opinion that what I wrote was as far from hate filled anything that to make that comparison is....beyond the realm of sanity.

Sometimes, humor just isn't appreciated.

I was talking specifically about the worship in church, that for a few minutes a week we can put aside our flesh and worship Him. I said nothing about worship the other 23 hours and since this thread is about drinking water in church, your comments seem to be off topic.

Interesting topic. Can we all agree that there are some circumstances in life where it would not be appropriate to take a drink of water? Perhaps while a loved one lies dying? Or how about when the bride and groom are reciting their vows?

For me, the feeling of reverence that I all too seldomly feel but would very much like to maintain throughout the service prohibit me from taking food and drink as we come together as one to worship our Crucified Lord.

It wouldn't bother me if someone else did bring something to drink though. I'm just glad there are other people in the church on Sunday. The more, the better.

That would be the best time. I would have to agree with making mountains out of molehills. More accurately it is making a volcano out of a molehill

Is this a segue into a discussion on allowing Mountain Dew in church?

Sneaky...

I'm not sure about soda, but the last time I asked the pastor for a dry vodka martini in the middle of his sermon, he didn't take it too well...

Well he'd have to stop preaching, mix it, then serve it. THEN, other people would want one, and he'd NEVER get back to his sermon.
