MyCatSmokey2006 -> Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/26/2008 11:43:26 PM)

I have problems with dry mouth due to medication, so sometimes I take a bottle of water or soda with me to church. I take a sip or two during the service, but I sense the disapproval of other church members when I do it and consequently I feel conspiculus.(sp?) Should I continue to do this or leave my drinks at home?

BTW, the water and sodas have screw top lids that can be closed, preventing spilling.

I'd personally be ok with water, not so sure about the soda's though.

Well, are you one of those people that glurp and chug quite loudly when drinking? Also, do you drink during very quiet times in the service? Could you time your drinking to coincide with a loud part in the sermon or laughter or clapping from the audience?

However, in general if it is not against your church rules, then there should be no problem!

You could also bring some gum or hard candy or even a marble to suck on the keep your mouth wet.

1love1God1way -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/26/2008 11:50:49 PM)

I have no problem with it at all. I don't have a problem with people drinking soda, coffee, etc. either.

MyCatSmokey2006 -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/26/2008 11:53:12 PM)

I drink quietly and try to do it during the singing or other noisy part of the service.

FolkSingerBlues -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 12:15:19 AM)

I grew up attending church in a "sanctuary".
I remember that it was frowned upon to drink anything in the confines of "the sanctuary".
Since we have moved to Nashville we attend church that meets in a gymnasium type room, they serve/sell coffee in the vestibule and many of us drink coffee, fruit juice etc.
When we visit the small country church that my Dad preaches at we usually walk in with our coffee. The looks are pretty humorous. I think it's kind of a "cultural" thing.
lol

I don't think it's a problem drinking water.

The church I go to now sells coffee and lots of people bring/drink coffee during the service. I choose not to, but that's my personal choice. I agree that it seems to be a cultural thing.

I have sat behind people who sip water/juice/soda all during the service, and it seemed to be more of a *I'm bored* thing to do. They were also the ones who had to refill the bottle, get up and go to the restroom a couple times, play with their hair, adjust their clothing, basically fidget during the entire service. It was very distracting.

SonInMe1 -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:57:48 AM)

I usta clean the church. Its amazing the things you would find in the sanctuary. I would be, for the most part, against drinking in the sanctuary unless it was neccesary.

Most people should be able to wait until the service is over.

I think people have a general disrespect for others...even in church. If your drinking is a distraction then I would caution against it. Now, I also believe nothing should distract you from worshipping your Lord and if a few slurps distracts you, you might not be in church for the right reason. Its kind of a two way street. Don't distract your pewmates and don't be distracted by them.

I would have more of a problem with the people who constantly talk through the sermon. I mean, why are they there if not to hear the word of God preached? To me that is rude and disrectful. Its one reason why I prefer sitting up front. Less people talk when the pastor can see them doing it.

Having a beverage and drinking it in Church during service does not bother me in the least.

Thanks

Coffee, tea, and water are holy beverages.

Soda is an abomination.

I wouldn't be bothered by your water. If you're feeling uncomfortable, can you put some water in a small container that has a straw attached? I'm not sure what they're called, but with a straw you might be able to hold your head in a less conspicuous manner while sipping.

I hope you feel better and continue to worship.

Papa-san -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:03:38 PM)

If you have a dry mouth, there is absolutely no reason for you not to bring in some water to drink during the service. (I actually think even without a dry mouth problem it's OK) I would pass on the soda, though...

I am assuming here that you are responsible enough to pick up after yourself! If a person brings water in and leaves their 'empty' sitting there afterwards, they should not be allowed to bring them in again, and I would be willing to inform them of this myself.

Those people who give you the disapproving looks need to re-work their standards, because a proper Christian isn't going to judge you on this matter. Those kinds of people aren't there to worship and learn, they are there to play the game and make the show...

shawke -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:09:31 PM)

We are actually encouraged to grab some food and drink and bring it into the sanctuary. I've never been distracted by others chowing down, and the drink helps when you get dry mouth from singing.

stellaluna -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:17:05 PM)

My church serves coffee that most people take into the service. I usually take a bottle of water in my purse, just in case I get thirsty. I don't think it's a problem as long as you're not obnoxious about it.

RubySparkles -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:26:48 PM)

My church also has a 'sanctuary' and consumptiono of anything at all is frowned upon. I personally don't mind water, but I have been cheeky in the past and snuck some sweets/gum.

iluvatar -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 1:52:56 PM)

I love my church. We have a table in the back of the sanctuary with coffee, juice, fruit and various pastries and people are welcome to help themselves at any time. Most people visit the table before or after the service, but nobody thinks much of anybody who gets up in the middle to grab a donut or some OJ.

As far as the cleanliness issue goes, I agree that it could be a legitimate concern, depending on the behavior of the folks who attend. Water wouldn't cause a mess (it would just dry), but food and other liquids could. Fortunately, we don't have any issues (that I'm aware of), but if there were more kids or just more people who couldn't be bothered to clean up after themselves, then things might be different.

-Dan.

Kindryll -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 2:37:44 PM)

I have yet to attend a church that minds people having bottles of water, in fact one church I visited handed out bottles of water during the offering to those that wanted one. As long as it is not a distraction and everyone picks up after themselves, I don't see the problem.

I think that other beverages however might be a problem, coffee and sodas can stain, you don't usually have that problem with water. Also, unless the water is very cold, you aren't s likely to cause a commotion if you spill it on yourself, however spilling hot coffee would be another matter entirely! [:)]

android125 -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 3:06:57 PM)

There are some really conservative congregations that would mind - and others that are less formal that would not.
My feeling is that if the people in your church are annoyed by a bottle of water being sipped then they should get a life. But thats just my opinion.

Sadey -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 3:17:21 PM)

If you read all these posts there are a dozen different ideas on what where and how to drink during church service. We all have our own ideas don't we and I wonder what the Lord thinks.[:)]

I probably would go to R.C.'s church so I would stay out of trouble, and hear some good preaching[:) Hmm, I'd better change the order of that, to hear some good preaching and then to stay out of trouble.[:)]

1love1God1way -> RE: Is It Okay To Drink Water and Other Beverages During Church Services? (1/27/2008 4:30:49 PM)

I heard an interesting story. A preacher was invited by a pastor to attend the opening of a brand-new, beautiful church. The pastor was walking the preacher through, showing him around. They were carrying some coffee with them. As they were in the sanctuary, talking amongst each other, the preacher accidentally spilled his coffee on the carpet.

The preacher freaked out. This church had not even had a single service in it, and he had already spilled on the carpet! He begun to apologize and was to run off to get some towels.

The pastor had a completely different reaction. He celebrated! The first stain!

What it meant to the preacher was a mar in God's place.

What it meant to the pastor was exactly what the church was about...fellowship, people living life in the presence of the LORD. Life is simply messy, and there is no shame in it. The pastor talked about how he hope there would be many stains...coffee, from times of fellowship, tears soaking the carpet, you name it. He felt that to try so hard to keep the church spotless was to miss the point entirely of why the church was there and what the focus should be.

Since I work during the service, I often need a drink of water. It's far less disruptive to take a drink of water than to start coughing because my throat is too dry.

If someone has a problem with that they can take my place and work for me. Today no one came to relieve the 2 deafblind interpreters and we worked alone the entire service.

In my opinon the coffee, tea, soda and other beverages and food belong in the fellowship hall. We just don't have enough people to throughly clean both rooms.

Peace,
AM

We have a coffee shop in our church, they also serve donuts and breakfast burritos. We are encouraged to enjoy our coffee/water/donuts during the service but they prefer that the burritos stay in the Cafe. DH and I usually each have a coffee or tea during the service so it wouldn't bother me at all if you had water[;)]

and breakfast burritos.

Wouldn't these come back to haunt the eater and the pew mates during the service?
