basssinger53 -> All-time Favorite Basses (2/2/2008 11:46:20 AM)

Relatively new here and haven't seen this asked so I thought I would.

List your three all-time favorite bass singers.

1. No question, George Younce. He was not only the best bass I have heard, he was a top-notch emcee.
2. Glenn Dustin. A real close number 2.
3. Maybe I should have asked for five. The third place is a tie with Tim Reilly, Jeff Chapman, & Mike Holcomb. I haven't heard as much from any of them as I'd like, so it's a hard choice.

If this has been asked before, sorry for the repeat.

Jeff_from_Kentucky -> RE: All-time Favorite Basses (2/2/2008 11:49:55 AM)

1. George Younce
2. Glenn Dustin
3. Jim "Big Chief" Wetherington
4. Jeremy Lile
5. Ed O'Neal
6. J.D. Sumner
7. Rex Nelon

Sorry, I couldn't go with just three of them.

armydude -> RE: All-time Favorite Basses (2/2/2008 11:53:01 AM)

He's getting ready to sing with the Prophets, and in the meantime doing selected dates with other groups (Monument Quartet, Johnny Minick & Friends).

88keysinnc -> RE: All-time Favorite Basses (2/3/2008 12:32:12 PM)

My current favs are:

1. Aaron McCune
2. David Hester
3. Tim Duncan

I found it interesting that Jim Hamill said (current Singing News) in a perfect quartet, he would choose Big Chief Weatherington to sing bass. What was so appealing about him? I have Statesmen Quartet recordings but I don't think he remotely compares to Aaron. He was a great rhythm singer. Otherwise, I don't get it. He must have been a super nice guy and a great quartet man.

Billboy -> RE: All-time Favorite Basses (2/3/2008 2:41:16 PM)

My all-time favorites are George Younce and Tim Riley, in that order. My runners-up are all the rest of them out there. I would like to make a special honorable mention of 2 long-time smooth bass singers who are still on the road today: Ed O'Neal and Gerald Williams.

Big Chief was the complete package. He could sing low notes when necessary, and could also sing "modern harmony". He was one of the greatest rhythm basses ever to sing gospel music.

What he said.

There's NO WAY I can limit this to three:

Tim Riley
Aaron McCune
Joe Brown
Brandon Barry
Lane Rainwater

And here's one to watch - Trent Adams
