So what happened, Duane? Should I have sent down Vito and Guido? Nope! No need, Bill. Sorry that it's taken me so long to get back to you guys, but the weekend was pretty crazy for me. My Wildcats finished off their opponent on Friday 10-0 in 4.5 innings, thanks to the 10 run "Mercy Rule." That put them in the Finals against Fairmont Senior High. They were only ahead 2-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, when they exploded for 5 runs. Holding FSHS scoreless in the top of the 5th, they scored 3 more in the bottom of the inning to take their first Class AAA State title by an identical 10-0 score. This may not have been the best team in WV history, but they were definitely in the Top 5. The funny thing about this whole championship is that Chase Pickering, their top player (and probable State Player of the Year) wasn't the star of the weekend - it was his kid brother, Andrew! Andrew, who's only a sophomore, smacked 3 HR in the two games. His first provided the last run on Friday, his 2nd served to really break open Saturday's game, and the third (in the bottom of the 5th), which made the score 8-0, was an absolute bomb. He hit it totally out of the ballpark, into the city street beyond the walls; it bounced into a warehouse across the street, then came down the stairs and back into the street again! What a shot!! And the other star of the game was a young guy, Brett McClanahan, who hadn't played team baseball since Little League. He's a highly prized basketball recruit, who took a shot at football his senior year, then played b-ball, and finally turned to baseball. He went 3-3 on Satruday - all of them extra-base hits (2 doubles and a triple)! Unreal!! And the best part is that they're gonna be loaded again next year; there's only 3 seniors on the squad. Can you say "2 in a row?" Oh, btw, one more thing about Chase and Andrew Pickering: their mother died during basketball season while they were playing a game. She'd been sick for awhile, but her death still hit them pretty hard. They dedicated their efforts this season to her memory, and look waht happened! Hey! Look at what the Reds are doing! They're playing some great ball right now, Jay Bruce is the second coming of "Roy Hobbs," and they swept the Braves over the weekend! Yip-yip-yip-yahooooooooo!!! Duane
