So how are everyone's seedlings doing? Mine are still alive and growing! I can't believe that they already are getting more leaves. Only 2 of my cucumber seeds have come up (I sowed 6) but they were from last year so didn't expect them all to show. I think that I actually sowed them (cucumbers) too early so shall pop some more into compost in a few weeks. Not many of my marigolds have come up either ~ again, last years seeds but I'm not too worried about them.

Deermousie ~ have you ever used strulch? I've seen it for sale and it's supposed to be really good as a mulch around plants. I like the sound of it because it's natural.

My seedlings are doing well except for the chives and a couple of tomatoes. We went on vacation last week and came back to the seedings needing a drink. I'm not going to have room for all the tomatoes, anyhow. I'd like to give some of the ones that make it away to friends and family. I never expected so many seeds to actually work... I'm still in awe that any came out at all!

This week, my goal is to plan out the garden space and confirm with dh that the size will work with his plans for the backyard. I also want to explore and order supports for the tomatoes, eggplants, and squashes.

The weather seems to be picking up here (she says after we had snow last week ~ highly unusual) so I'm going to start hardening my tomatoes off. I shall be taking them out during the day and keeping them under cloches and bringing them in at night for a while ~ and then keeping them in the open on good days until they can stay out for good ~ though that could be another month yet. I was reading in my gardening book they could go out once the night temp reached 7 degrees and it has been ~ but it also warned to protect from frost.

My other seedlings seem to be doing well too

I'm hardening off now, too. My eggplant, bells, and japs are all doing excellant. I have carrots, tomatoes, and yellow squash that are all strong, although some of the sprouts didn't make it. I'm afraid the zuc won't make it at all, although there are one or two sprouts that seem to be still hanging on. The chives and lettuces are gone. I've treated everything the same, so I'm not sure why the zuc is dying off. I figure the chives and lettuces neede some different treatment than everything else, but I'm not experienced enough to know what I did wrong.

How do herbs do in a garden? I have thyme and rosemary in a sheltered pot and they do well. Can other herbs be put in a full-sun garden?

We built the raised bed this weekend. Next weekend we will fill it with dirt. Then the next week I'll put my little sprouts out. Wednesday is last frost, so they should be fine.

I'm learning on herbs ~ rosemary is meant to be pretty tough so can grow anywhere (I've heard) and I'm guessing the same can be said for other 'woody' herbs. The softer ones (basil, parsley, coriander etc) may be a little more delicate. I'm not sure...

How much water did you give the zuc? I killed my cuc seedlings last year by overwatering them ~ this year, all I've really done is given them a light spray every day with water and they seem to be doing much better. Weird ~ I always thought they needed lots of water!

Are you keeping notes of what you did this year so that you try something different next year?

No notes, but maybe I should while I can still remember?

How else do you think I remember that I overwatered my cucs . I may well still manage to kill 'em this year, but it won't be from overwatering

I do hope we can get our garden tilled and my cukes and zukes planted before the rain starts.

This quote is from another thread, but it got me to wondering what weather conditions my sprouts won't stand. What type of rainfall should I avoid? All or just heavy? How long should they be planted before it rains?

The best I can come up with is until they are estabilshed and stronger... I'm putting my seedlings out during the day, but I'm keeping them covered when it rains, because they can get damaged that way ~ I'm just using cloches, but in theory I guess you could use anything as long as it wasn't laying directly on the seedling.

I'm taking some plants round to 2 friends tomorrow and then taking some more to another friend next week ~ that will get rid of my excess tomatoes

I've killed on of my cuc plants off . Not sure why. The other is ok. I've put it in another pot and it's joined the tomatoes getting some sun. I started some more cuc seeds off a week or 2 ago and they've just started to appear. I may use the last cuc seeds I have to plant directly outside in a week or two.

I've weeded one of my raised beds and added some seaweed extract. My nemaslugs should be here tomorrow or Tuesday and so I will use that right away and then sow some bean seeds.

I've got some potato plants appearing . I planted my other potatoes (hopefully I'll get them at two different times).

I repotted most of my tomatoes. I saw a lady I knew as I was going to deliver some of the plants I was giving away and gave her two plants. Still left my other friends with 3 plants each, which is perfect for them as they're both using grow bags.

I put some fuchsia in a planter last year and they're coming back ~ I'm really pleased. I had some michalmas daises in with them but took those up (then divided them and gave some away) so I've just got fuchsia now. I trimmed the old parts of the plants back. I love fuchsia but they have always died off during winter before so I'm really pleased

The gardening that I did on Friday really knocked me out physically so I've not done much today. I think I have to go into the next town tomorrow so I won't be able to do much in the garden probably.
