Here's a cute joke I've found:

New Diet

Jan is terribly overweight, so the doctor hands over a sheet of paper with a diet on it.

"I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have lost at least five pounds.

When Jan returns, The doctor's amazed to see a loss of nearly 20 pounds.

"Why, that's amazing!" the doctor says. "Did you follow my instructions?"

Jan nods, "I'll tell you, though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day."

"From hunger, you mean?" asked the doctor.

"No, from skipping."

Welcome to CW, Maria.

This may not be the best thread for you to post your question. I'd recommend that you start a new thread with a title indicating your specific disorder. You'll find others who are able to support you better than those in a weight loss thread.

Don't be offended that we don't have the expertise to help you. It's not that we don't care, but rather that you need specific help with someone who is qualified to help you. I can offer you a sympathertic ear, and encouragement, but I can't give you any real help. I don't know wbout the others posting in this thread... but even those who may have expertise on eating disorders in this thread would need much more info to even begin to help you.

I successfully survived my alpine trek to the Himalayans this morning at the doctor's office .... ok, that's what my cardiac stress treadmill test was like. And can I say that it's more than just mildly distracting to be huffing and puffing on a treadmill SET AN AN INCLINE OF 12 with a heart rate monitor-thingy duct-taped to my stomach and various dangling, ticklish electrode thingies stuck all over my chest? The doctor rather diabolically chuckled as he said, "we'll just go until you are tired." Heck, I was tired just stepping ONTO the treadmill weighted down with 20 pounds of electronic gear, some of which was perilously close to rather sensitive parts of my anatomy. After taking a moment to explain all the various and assorted sundry life-threatening and dangerous symptoms I MIGHT expect, he then commented (sounding surprised) that my heart rate had ALREADY climbed .... and he hadn't turned the treadmill on yet. I rather wondered if he could just let me sit in a recliner and he could stress me out by commenting on the national election, allowing me to just skip my scheduled mountain goat training ... but, alas, that was not to be. And why did he keep wanting me to chat while fiendishly SPEEDING UP the gosh-darned treadmill?

Hmmm.... my biggest question is ... how the heck do I log THAT for the day?

The GOOD NEWS for today is that I successfully passed my cardiac treadmill stress test without keeling over and flopping on the floor in the doctor's office. It wasn't so much the speed of the treadmill, but the incline of 12 degrees definitely made my legs WORK for each step.... yowzer! By the time I was done (and panting!) my blood pressure was still only 140/80 ... yay! (It started at 122/80!) Anyway, my doc has cleared me to return to my normal at-home regimen of "reasonable" recreational neighborhood biking, "reasonable" neighborhood walking and moderate treadmilling, and using my recumbant bike in moderation ... but he has formally and officially vetoed the over-priced personal trainer.... for another 30 pounds, then he will re-evaluate me. (He kept using the words "moderation" and "reasonable" and "be careful" .... so I guess I can take a hint)

I'm so glad you passed your mountain goat test! I was afraid they might find you were normal!

Did your doctor explain what "reasonable" and "in moderation" actually mean in objective language?

Nope. But my wonderful DH pointed out that it probably means "don't exercise so hard that you have to go to the doctor's office with heart attack symptoms."

So, I was good this morning and rode my bike leisurely around the neighborhood ... 3 miles.

HEY! I exercised today and didn't flop over!

Exercise: biked 4 miles around the neighborhood (2 "loops" of 1 mile, plus 5 times around my block ... we measured these routes in the car!). I spent a lot of time mentally admiring/criticizing lawns and flowers today. Some days I look at front doors. And other days (usually weekends) I peek into messy garages.... or scarily neat ones. One I passed had a black and white checkerboard floor and pristine bright white walls and NOTHING in it. Not a broom, not a box, not a rake .... and, no, the home isn't vacant.

I logged those biking miles, especially since I've had the munchies the past few days -- it reminds me I still have a deficit. My blood sugar was low this afternoon, so I ate an unscheduled apple. (HA! Doesn't that sound silly, "an unscheduled" apple?) I also took Minnie the bouncemeister HyperDog for a walk around the block .... there is no fast walking with Minnie since she must zig zag constantly and stop and sniff and tinkle constantly. Still, she seems to love it, even if she does bark/growl at (1) other dogs; (2) cats; (3) birds; (4) people; and (5) falling leaves. OK, it's not that bad. Seriously, though, she has waaaaay tooooo much energy some days! (She's a 12-pound, 13.5" tall miniature pinscher .... a bouncy one!)

What else did I do today? Oh, I paid bills. The ATT phone/DSL bill, the T-Mobile cell phone bill, I wrote a check out to a local cat rescue (we sponsor two orange tabby feral cats), plus I wrote checks to our gardener and to the guy who sprays our lawn for weeds. I try to write checks in groups, if possible .... but I suppose the last few will just trickle in at their own pace .... local utilities (sewer, water, trash), Comcast cable, Scoop Doggy Doo and the Spider Guy. After that, I think I get a week off from bill paying before the 1st of April hits and it starts ALL over again, lol!

It's 5:40pm, I better get dinner started....

Hey all!
I thought I would join in the discussion. It sounds like a lot of you are doing great. I am still sticking with mostly intuitive eating (I change a lot) but this is what I followed when I was young and thinner (I didn't know it was called anything back then LOL). I really remained thin my whole life until my early twenties when I first went on a diet. Then I yo-yoed up and down for many years. I am off that roller coaster and loosing weight naturally as I follow the intuitive eating principles.
Hope everyone has a great evening!!!!

I think it's easier to eat lighter (more fruits and veggies) in the spring and summer than in the fall and winter. At least for me. Lately I've really been loving salads and some other summertime veggies. (And I am growing my own tomatoes this year!)

Tonight's dinner is homemade chicken noodle soup ... yum!

Are ya eating your veggies!?

HI Ofa!!!!

Ofa! Intuitive Eating is where you only eat when hungry, right? Is there much more to it?

I have an easier time with veggies in the spring and summer, too. The more I eat them the more I crave them. Dh thinks that's crazy... a normal person doesn't crave veggies!

I've had lots of veggies lately. Tonight we're having a meatless dinner with mac & cheese as our protein and veggies on the side. 15 more minutes and I am starving!!

After have 2 bad eating days I lost almost 2 pounds, and this after only losing 2 pounds with 5 weeks of good eating days.

Anyway, I've lost about 4 1/2 pounds now out of the 25 I want to lose. I'm just slightly over the 140 mark, can't wait to see it go lower!

It's given me more motivation to keep at it now that I'm finally seeing a little bit of results! It was getting so frustrating doing everything right and not seeing the scale move.

Less than a month till we leave for Florida - I'd love to lose 5 more pounds by then, we'll see if that's possible.

Tammy, if you lose weight after "bad eating days" and not really after "good eating weeks," your "good eating days" calories may be too low, and slowing down your metabolism. You may want to look into this.

Anyway, congrats!!!!

Ok look it seems that my question was taken the wrong way. Yes I have had an eating disorder in the past. Has it been a problem for me now? no, it has not. My question is this as a christain woman how (if the need should call for it ) should it be dealth with? Because before I was not a Christain but now I am. I do not believe a person has to be on drugs to deal with things. By the way Harvie, thanks and where can I find that link, I am still sorta new here.

Gosh, I just read this post. You asked how Christians dealt with eating disorders, Miss Giggles answered you in the way that she felt was best ~ that 'someone' should seek help from a therapist for them because eating disorders were dangerous things. I don't think she aimed the 'you' at you personally, but made it a generic answer.

Your next post makes it much clearer
quote:

My question is this as a christain woman how (if the need should call for it ) should it be dealth with?

My response is irrespective of whether someone is a man, woman or child, Christian or not a Christian they need to seek help for whatever eating disorder they have. They should listen carefully to what their doctors/therapists/whomever tells them and perhaps accept that at that time the health care workers know better than the patient does what is best for them ~ so if meds are suggested, they should not rule them out. Medications may not be necessary, but sometimes they may help an individual. It goes without saying that the individual needs to be prayed for and supported through this (and quite possibly for years after) ~ but care should be taken because some people, meaning well, may do more harm than good because they simply don't know better. There often is no one clear-cut way of treating someone though because we are all individuals.

Maria, I'm really glad that you've dealt with your eating disorder. It's not something to easily overcome.

Well, I weighed in this morning and the scale said...

I GAINED 2 POUNDS!

I know my bad eating habits this week are partly to blame, I had too much trail mix, but I was still hoping for a loss. Oh well.

BUT, that's about to change, because,

I've been reading the Atkins books "The New Diet Revolution" and The Atkins Essentials" and am planning to start a modified version of Atkins sometime next week. I'm probably not going to get as radical as the book suggests for the first two weeks because I still want to eat certain foods and for health reasons. I need to make these changes if I want to lose weight and become more healthy.

Don't be discouraged, Melissa. It takes a little bit of time for things to show up.

Temporary weight gain could appear quickly after a large meal or two, but that does not mean that if you've overdone it, you're doomed. After all, daily weight fluctuations are normal.

link

We all have failed with trail mix before! And tomorrow is Easter...my first day carefree with some caffeine in 40 Days.

(Albeit I give thanks for Christ! He is risen! +)

HOLY HAND GRENADES, BATMAN!

Hee hee hee ... I just wanted to say that! Let's review this past week, shall we?

In the last week, I've biked 24 miles around my lovely neighborhood (plus the recumbant bike time, too!)
In the last week, I've taken Minnie walking around my neighborhood every day
In the last week, I've had at least a 900 calorie deficit every day
In the last week, I've averaged 75g fiber DAILY
In the last week, I diligently drank PLENTY of water DAILY
In the last week, my carbs were right at 55% DAILY
Sooo...... what did Mr. Scale show this morning for all of this effort, diligence, perseverence, and healthy eating??? Yep, kids, that's right! A .8 GAIN! And, yes, I got on and off and on and off and on and off the scale sixteen zillion times to make sure. Bad Scale! Bad Scale! Bad Scale!

So, today is now a no-logging day, in the hopes that cycling my calories UPWARD will help fix this little problem. Don't worry, I will still behave ... I had my normal hummus and muffin and Fiber One for breakfast (40g fiber). But lunch will be OUT and we're going out to dinner tonight (Thai Food) with a friend.

SO THERE, MR. SCALE.

Yeah, I was kinda wondering if that was it. Especially with exercising and nursing. It's scary to eat more though.

Harvie, I've got the answer for you, me and anyone else with problems with that nasty scale! There is a cartoon in the Calorie King "Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter" book which shows a scale all messed up and a woman walking away from it with a shotgun in her hands.

A NEW WEEK ... A NEW APPROACH

My weight loss has been really slow for the past 4 weeks, so I've decided to try making some changes in my eating plan. Now that I've had the weekend off and "cycled my calories upward" for the past two days, I am ready for a new approach. My plan is to try this for the next 4 weeks, and then to re-evaluate how things improved/changed as a result of my changes.

I WILL BE INCREASING MY CALORIES BY 400 TO 1900

I have been eating 1500 calories a day (most days... not non-logging days), but I've also been increasing my exercise, especially biking and walking and gardening. And my plan is to increase the amount of biking that I do. So, my plan is to INCREASE my calories by 400 each day, so that my metabolism doesn't slow down thinking that my body is approaching starvation mode. I've decided to try this for the next 6 weeks.

I WILL BE INCREASING MY FAT INTAKE FROM 15 TO 20 PERCENT

I have decided to be intentional about eating more almonds each day, as well as more healthy fats. (OK, and more Laughing Cow Light low fat cheese, too!) I have noticed some dry skin, and think that the increased fat should be fine and shouldn't adversely impact my cholesterol and triglyceride levels ... plus I love cheese and I love nuts, so this will be nice for my happy tastebuds.

I WILL BE INCREASING MY PROTEIN INTAKE, AND DECREASING CARBS

Now that I have stopped taking insulin, I am seeing higher blood sugars. My plan for combatting this is to attempt to limit my carbs to 200g each day .... and to really keep them as close to 50% as possible. (They've been approaching 55-60% ... and I want to tweak these percentages a bit to see if it helps both my diabetes and my weight loss.) I do want to keep my high-fiber, veggie-laden diet, so this means that I really will be using those extra 400 calories a day to eat more protein (as opposed to eating fewer veggies.)

Of course, any suggestions or advice anyone has will be greatly appreciated.... especially about the calorie increase, the fat percentages, or the carb/protein ratio. I do have to be careful not to decrease my carbs by too much, since I have a history of low blood sugars .... which prevent me from being able to exercise. Anyway, wish me luck as I try something new!!!
