Well, I had decided to try doing 3 days of South Beach Phase 1 but I've had to quit. I normally lose 1 pound/day if I do it for 3 days. After that it takes like 5 more days to lose more and that's just not worth it to me so I just do 3 days. Anyway, I lost 1 pound after the first day like usual. However after Day 2 I woke up at 6am to nurse my baby and I was absolutely starving and felt lightheaded and was sweating. I tried having a snack of peanuts and cheese, but that did nothing. So I had some crackers and I felt better after that. Apparently this is not a good time to do Phase 1. So, I'm back to just eating good and exercising - slow and steady wins the race right?

WHY I THINK SHOPPING AT WALMART "COUNTS" AS EXERCISE

We went to WalMart yesterday afternoon because I wanted to get some prescription sunglasses with those nifty Transitions lenses. When I looked at prices for just eyeglass FRAMES at the doc's office, my heart started racing and my blood pressure had to have skyrocketed .... $240 for JUST the frames, before lenses were even added. So, by the time we reached Walmart, my heart rate was already up ... and in prime exercise mode.

After looking at and trying on 21 different pairs of glasses (nice use of upper body there .... lift, try on, lift, try on) ... I decided on a pair that both my wonderful DH and I liked. Then, since were were AT Walmart, we decided to pick up some basics. While he wandered off in search of mouthwash and deodorant, I mosey'd on over to the bra department. For some silly reason, I thought that I would look at sports bras.

Of course, the NORMAL way to try on bras is usually to take it with you to a dressing room, take off whatever you are wearing, and THEN try on the bra. I figured I'd save walking to the dressing room AND undressing by just trying on the sports bra OVER the tank top I was already wearing. OH MY GOSH. Have you ever attempted to put on a probably-too-small sports bra OVER a tank top? About halfway through, I got stuck ... my arms contorted awkwardly, and I couldn't get the damn thing ON or OFF. So I started laughing to myself at the absurdity of the situation .... which made it even worse. As I gyrated and contorted and tugged, my husband finally arrived, only to be laughing so hard as to not be much help. Finally, he clued in that he should probably save me from this attacking sports bra, so he gallantly tugs for me to help me put it ON. (Not OFF, mind you.) As I stood there, panting for breath and unable to breathe deeply because the darn things was too small, I realized that NOW I had to get the silly thing OFF. (No, it didn't have snaps.) So my wonderful DH gallantly held on to the bottom of my tank top so it didn't ride up, as I squirmed and struggled and wiggled my way OUT of the death grip of that brassiere.

By the time I was done, I was panting and sweating. Who needs sports when sports bras exist? Then my wonderful DH made some sort of silly wisecrack, and I ended up chasing him through half the store with the cart, until I finally caught up with him by the pet food. He is lucky I was so winded and tired or I'd have run him down, LOL!

So that, my friends, is why shopping at Walmart counts as exercise!!!!!

I am in LOVE with Google Maps Pedometer!

I can bike or walk all over my neighborhood, then I can come home and see exactly how many miles I walked/biked. (I know, I know, I could just get a pedometer .... but then I couldn't sit by the computer and play, now could I?) Plus it is fun to plan out routes.

Tammy, one of the problems of repeated dieting (ie starting then stopping a diet as we gain/lose weight) is our body can figure out what is going on and it makes it hard in the long run to lose. I do not know if it's why you had the problem this time, but it's possible.

OK, this is a SMALL victory, but at this point I will take any victory I can get. I got on Mr. Scale this morning and it read 280.8 twice in a row ... YAY! After being up an extra 4 pounds of water retention, it's nice to have FINALLY dropped below my previous low weight of 281.0! I know, it's just .2 below .... but a loss is a loss is a loss, right? Now if I can just lose .8 more before next Tuesday, I'll have lost 4 pounds for March ... not too impressive, but at least it would be a pound a week.... not too shabby considering the changes I've undergone this month: (a) off insulin; (b) on thyroid meds; (c) increased exercise; and (d) increased calories, protein and fat.

I took yesterday (Thursday) off from exercising ... just walked Minnie dog once around the block. But today (Friday), I've biked 10 miles ... with more planned for later this weekend! Woooo Hooooooooo!

MARCH 1 WEIGHT .... 284

APRIL 1 WEIGHT .... 280 (if I lose more between now and Tues, I'll update!)

MARCH WEIGHT LOSS .... 4 pounds

TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS .... 92 pounds (7 months)

MARCH COMMENTS: March was a weird month for me, and my body is undergoing a period of adjustment. I stopped taking insulin (diabetes), I started taking Synthroid (thyroid), my weight lass stalled because I increased my exercise without increasing my calories, so I increased my calories from 1500 a day to 1900 per day with a committment to do more exercise (biking.) And I also seemed to be really battling water retention following four non-logging days. So, all in all, the four pound loss (1 pound a week), while my lowest weight loss to date, is at least understandable.

LOOKING AHEAD: I am now nicely one week into my 1900 calorie per day groove, and have been biking an hour or more 6 days a week around my neighborhood. I'm trying to eat more protein/fat and not increase my carbs at all, and my fiber is still around 70g per day. We leave on our cruise May 3, so I really would like April to be a strong month for me. I have two upcoming milestones (goals) that I'd like to hit in April (or May) ....

Lose 1 more pound = 93 pounds = 25 percent of my starting weight
Lose 8 more pounds = 100 pounds = 100 POUNDS LOST!

Harvie, did you see the study showing two cinnamon tables (500 mg) a day reduced both blood sugar and cholesterol after only a short time. (Taking more didn't make a difference and capsules should be one at a time). Do a web search. It was in a well known medical magazine a few months ago. I began taking it 'just because'. After all, cinnamon surely can't hurt anyone.

Do you think it's helped? The study said the average drop was 29% in 40 days.

I just got back from vacation and am ready to get back into eating well. I had so much junk food last week! My main veggie consumption last week was V8, which isn't very good for you if you count all the sodium. I'm excited about grocery shopping today to get lots of fresh foods- except for the fact that there is rain in the forecast.

I don't think Harvie could say whether it's helped or not could she given the changes she's made in her lifestyle over the past months...

It's hard to say. During that same period of time, I've started to exercise, eat better, and I've lost 92.2 pounds .... all of which has helped my diabetes. (Probably the weight loss has helped the most!)

Well, I've only done the diet maybe 3 times - and the last time was probably 2 years ago, so I'm pretty sure that's not it. I think I just wasn't getting enough calories in.

I'm pretty much eating by their Phase 3 (maintenance) plan now. I'm hoping the exercising will do the trick. I'm pretty much holding at 140 right now - but considering the birthday weekend (DD#1 is 7!) and bad eating that went along with it that we just had, I think that's good.

Happy April, everyone! Can I say that I am optimistic about April? Of course, I was optimistic and enthusiastic about March, and it really was fairly disappointing in the Weight Loss Department .... yet, nevertheless, I am optimistic and anticipating and enthusiastic about APRIL! (Now, if only I can get the scale to be just as optimistic and enthusiastic, right?)

I biked 11 miles on Monday and am pretty proud of myself. After breakfast, I hopped on my bike and just headed in the general direction of a friend's house.... who lives 5.2 miles away. Next thing I knew, I was on her doorstep! heh heh heh ..... and it felt like a lot of it was uphill! I stayed for a very short visit, then hopped back on my bike and headed home. My legs were TIRED that last mile or so! Later in the day I went for a quick 1-mile loop around the neighborhood .... but then I was pooped! And I even managed to get a bit of a sunburn today.

The scale on Monday read it's lowest ever: 279.8. It was kind of exciting to be out of the 280s... if only barely. Technically, that gave me a 4.2 pound loss for the month of March. My TOM of the month should be ending later this week, so I hoping that the scale will continue to inch downward, slowly but surely. Hmmm.... of only I could give it a SHOVE, huh?

NUTRITION RESULTS FOR MARCH 31
CALORIES BURNED : 3000
CALORIES EATEN : 2000
CALORIE DEFICIT: 1000
GRAMS OF FIBER: 77
FAT PERCENTAGE: 17.3%
PROTEIN PERCENT: 42.7%
CARB PERCENTAGE: 39.9%
VEGGIE SERVINGS: 13 servings

EXERCISE RESULTS FOR MARCH 31
biked 11 miles around neighborhood (110 minutes / 825 calories)
walked Minnie Dog once
lots of sweeping out front

We are forecast for rain on Wednesday .... and, of course, April showers bring May flowers! Of course, we've already got LOTS of flowers here, but maybe this means that the rest of the country will start blooming! YAY! My sunflowers have sprouted and one is already 5 inches tall! I don't know if I will get to bike outdoors on rainy Wednesday ... so may return to my trusty treadmill and recumbant exercise bike, or I may decide to make Wednesday my no-exercise day for the week. Hmmm.... decisions, decisions!

Tuesday we had simply gorgeous weather, and since my wonderful DH was flying a Tuesday NIGHT mission, that meant he was home earlier in the day. We went on a 7 mile bike ride, and then we popped over to the mall so he could surprise me with two new bracelets (green and blue), one new t-shirt (white, lavendar and aqua), and three new tank tops (pink, blue and aqua!) He said to consider them "early Anniversary presents" since he's not sure he will be in town for our Anniversary. By the way, Saturday April 12 is our FIFTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!

Dinner on Tuesday was one of my favorites ... spicy tuna sashimi salad with radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, yellowfin tuna and green onions ... plus a ear of corn and a blueberry fiber muffin. Lunch on Tuesday was egg salad, cucumber, an apple, cheese, turkey and radishes. I am definitely eating a lot of protein these days .... which really has been helping to keep my blood sugars under control -- YAY! I go for another blood test in about three weeks to check my thyroid meds ... so it will be interesting to see how my blood sugars have been doing, OFF insulin.

Can I confess that I am a bit scared about Saturday? I've been invited to a baby shower for one of the ladies I used to work with at the City Attorney's Office. I know that there will be at least a half-dozen women there that I USED to work with, who I have not seen since fall 2005 when I quit my job due to stress. I now have REALLY short hair, haven't worked in the past 2.5 years and ... oh, yea ... I've lost 70 pounds since they last saw me. (I've lost 92.2 pounds, but I'm going by what I weighed back in 2005.) I don't know why the whole event scares me ... but it really does. Well, maybe "nerve-wracking" is a better description. And I know I'm not that worried about what's being served -- I already decided Saturday would be a no-logging day and I will just choose wisely. And I have the cutest baby outfits ever as my gift ... I think it's just the thought of having to face a room-full of women, and hoping that I measure up, ya know? (And I am wearing "the" green dress!)

NUTRITION RESULTS FOR APRIL 1
CALORIES BURNED : 3000
CALORIES EATEN : 1927
CALORIE DEFICIT: 1073
GRAMS OF FIBER: 85
FAT PERCENTAGE: 12.5%
PROTEIN PERCENT: 46.1%
CARB PERCENTAGE: 41.4%
VEGGIE SERVINGS: 11 servings

EXERCISE RESULTS FOR APRIL 1
biked 11 miles around neighborhood (110 minutes / 825 calories)
shopping (does that count?)

You're going to get loads of attention at the Shower and I'd bet a lot that's what makes you nervous. You've worked really hard to get where you are and enjoy your life as a SAHW... you've made lots of changes and probably wonder how those changes will be accepted. That's all normal. I think the new and unwanted attention is one of the hardest things to deal with about change. It's one reason women who lose weight end up having affairs- they don't remember how/ know how to handle the positive attention. You also may have to endure some catty comments about not working depending on the character of your coworkers. You may have some who can't understand why a woman would chose to be a SAHW when such a lucrative career was available.

Just be the wonderful, patient, informative women we all love and don't take offense at the questions you get. I know as a SAHW it's easy to be hypersensitive about questions about not working when the questioner doesn't mean to be rude, but is curious. And don't let the compliments on your weight go to your head.

Spicy tuna sashimi salad sounds wonderful! I think you will be given a lot of attention and not sure how to handle that as well. Don't worry...just think of it as a way to show what God has done in your life.

I have a baby shower to attend soon and have to be on guard about the food as well...
