ORIGINAL: cognitivemagic God indeed bestows grace but not without some expectation of personal responsibility. Consider the parable of the talents. Each person was given his due and expected to make some profit. When the employer returned to receive his profit, he rewarded them all accordingly. One made tenfold and in turn received an additional tenfold. And likewise with the one who made 5. But the one who buried his talent made excuse, but was nevertheless held to account. And it didn't bode well for him. But what sense would this Gospel story make if God was entirely behind the wheel of all men's decisions? Are you making SALVATION a matter of one's own personal responsibility? If so, then every saved (responsible) person is his or her own personal savior! You are certainly free (if God wills) to hold this view, but what is it about this attitude that honors God in salvation?

ORIGINAL: cognitivemagic So, according to a Calvinist/Reformed reading of this verse (i.e. that God changes the person by rewiring the "will"), a Christian obeys God's will to the uttermost. Right? Nope... There is a remnant of our old self... quote:
How "reformed" does Calvinism really make someone? It doesn't... God reforms... The new creature is sanctified over time... Of course in God's time it's already done... quote:
This "synergy" is consistent with the rest of St. Paul's soteriology, especially in verses in Romans and Galatians (respectively) where he says that God: "Will render to each man according to what he has done" If that is truly the case Paul should have struck dead not down, right? Didn't the same Paul pen the following? 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. quote:

Since all have sinnned and fall short of the glory of God... John

Yes, well said. btw, have either of you noted what all Paul said when he penned "for all have sinned"? In Rom 3:24-25 he tells us how to be justified freely (v.24), "through faith in His blood" (v.25). What I find most fascinating is that he included the entire human race under "for all have sinned" as the ones who can be justified by faith. The ESV captures the concept the best for v.24 by saying, "for all have sinned...and are justified freely". Clearly, he isn't saying that all are justified, but he clarified how all are justified, which is "through faith in His blood".
